Perfect ! I'm going to use Enamel on top of Acrylic . Too many modellers seem to be churning out models to a set formula to my mind . Grey coat , black panel highlights , colour coat , gloss coat , wash coat , decals , matt coat etc . I think sometimes they should consider that many warplanes were shot down before the paint was even dry .
I've just properly started airfix this week and thanks to your videos my models have been much easier to make and more effective overall. thank you so much!
I use an Airbrush exclusively for the exteriors; however, I am extremely impressed with how convincing this method of mottling is! Airbrushing 1/72 mottling isn't something I normally look forward to, lol
Great stuff...Thanks very much for posting this, as it will save me messing around with an airbrush to try and do this, especially in the 1/72 scale. Big fan of your videos/posts, from Ireland...
Great video. Will have to give this a try. I have a dozen Bf109s and 110's lined up for a Battle of Malta build and this will certainly make life easier and quicker than breaking out the airbrush each time!
Thank you for this video. Can you please tell me how to achieve that light blue / grey colour ? I mixed Revell 55,78 and 5 which did not work. 49 is also not the right colour..
Ok. Luckily for me though, the paint I’m using is Acrylic, and water will be used for mottling, and water won’t remove the paint, as far as I’m concerned
Love your videos! You have great skills. Could you make a video about wear on 1:1 (or smaller) hand gun/fire arm model replica? I don't think dry brushing silver over the blued black or gun metal looks good, since the paint (or galvanized steel) doesn't chip but it wears off, on protruding parts, softly and blending. I am a fan of enamels. I personally don't think acrylics will yield the desired results in this case (just my opinion). Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
I'm building Merkava 1:35, and I want to brush paint it. is it possible? do you have tips,, cuz I watch already your video,, but mostly your video is on a smaller scale.
Hi Owen, fab video mate. Quick question though, did you think your paint before applying to model like normal? Or just use the thinner on the actual model? Cheers olly!
Hey, great video. Can u help me please? ! What colors did you use? I saw the enamel 24 and I couldn't figure out the other one. And what Revell enamel color do you recomend to paint my BF 109 k4 based on War Thunder game. Thank you so much!
@Quick Kits Hello :) Just a question: Do I need thinners for the revell email (enamel) paint? (No airbrush) Btw I like that you make videos for people who don't have an airbrush :)
You probably could do it with acrylics, or you might have to do really thin coats of acrylic on top of each other to build up the faded look instead... I haven't tried yet but I will when I get round to by BF109
@@IIThund3rII Im also thinking that would happen, maybe just dot with increasing amount of thinner added to the paint, and then just add a very thin layer of the base coat over it
+Benn Bridel Thin out the paint, meaning it takes longer to dry and you get thinner coats with less brush strokes and a more even coverage. You can get enamel thinners for enamel paint, or acrylic thinners (or just use water) for acrylic paint :)
Do you think this technique would work for blended edges when doing different coloured camouflage? To gain an airbrush effect? Would there be a danger of the paint reacting and peeling away? Sorry to keep bothering you when you should be revising! 😜
+David Thompson I've done that on my 1/35 Tamiya Pzkpfw IV and it worked. I didn't do quite the same as this mottling obviously, I blended the still-wet thinned enamel paint with a dry cotton bud over the top of the previous camo. Yes there would be danger of the paint reacting if the previous coat hasn't cured properly - because it's easier to do with enamel paints you'll need to leave them a good 24 hours to cure before doing the next coat
I think it should be possible, you might have to use more of a dry-brushing technique though. Or, paint multiple thin layers of the blue and grey over each other (allowing them to dry in between) to build up a blended look
Tried tamiya acrylics both with thinner and water (not both at the same time) - does not work Things i also tried: *dry brushing *cut down brush *a piece of sponge
You might want to also look at Revell Aquacolor acrylic paints or Hataka Blue Line acrylics which are designed for brush painting. I've never tried Tamiya acrylics myself, but I've heard that they aren't the easiest to brush paint with. I'm sorry to hear this hasn't worked with Tamiya acrylics - I hope you manage to find a way to get the effect to work for you!
58 seconds of pure helpfulness and advice! Perfect!
Thank you!

Amen! The current trend to (over)weather aircraft dismays me. As you said, aircraft were delivered with new paint jobs.
Thank you sooooooooooooooooo much !!! Now I can finally finish my Focke Wulf fw190
I hope this technique works well for you!

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I was thinking of giving up on making a BF109 for that reason. Now I have a reason to buy it
amazing. such a useful tip for people who prefer brushes still
You are amazing 🤯 thank you I've been trying to figure this out for years
I have never seen that done, I use an airbrush but mottling on a 1/72 scale plane is tricky! I will use this; awesome.
Many people like myself were waiting for a video about this. Great work my friend. Will definitely have to try it now.
Thank you so much for this video, I really didn't want to buy an airbrush just for a few models I stick together in my spare time
Wow! Patience and more patience ... to cultivate! The finish is perfect! :)
That is very good technique Owen . I guess your overcoat of blue was thin so allowed the mottle to show through . looks convincing .

Brilliant......How simple, and it looks great.
+BennyCFD thank you! I'm glad you think that :)
Dude...that is freaking amazing!
Another easy and wonderful tip I will be using soon. Building a BF-109F2.
Great tip! Thanks from an aspiring d&d mini painter!
I used this! It worked really well. Thankyou so very much ! You’ve been quiet recently QKits. Hope all is ok??
Cheers. I'll try it out on an old kit then finally I can build a model of Eric Brown's Komet👍
Another awesome technic you're the best owen !!!
Wow, nice little trick - thanks!
Very real looking technique.

There was me building a 1/32 FW190 and wondering how to do this and up popes this video!
Can life get any better? 🙂
I will try this with my bf109. Thanks for the tip!!!
You're welcome :)
the result was beautiful on my 1/35 elefant tank hunter revell
fantastic thanks for this golden tip, it helped me a lot
This is perfect! I have all the tools, and finally can finish my FW190. One Question though: if the are is already painted, will thinner remove it?
Ok. Luckily for me though, the paint I’m using is Acrylic, and water will be used for mottling, and water won’t remove the paint, as far as I’m concerned
TheSabre Hawg1209 yes, I did it last night. But it was tough. You have to be careful and it takes some time to become smooth again.
these videos are brilliant.
Thank you!
Definitely try this, thank you mate 👍👍🤘🤘
Nice effect, always good to have options!
Really good Tip. Thanks for Posting this.
That's a tip were i was lookig for. I'll try this on my next model.
+Zammpie Cool I hope it goes well for you! :)
This is very helpful! Awesome! Thank You!
Great video, thanks very informative

Привет !! Отличный метод нанесения камуфляжа без аэрографа !! Какой краской при этом используете? Что это , растворитель или вода??
Hi Owen great videos I'm learning a lot. I wondering if this technique works with acrylics and acrylic thinners? Both humbrol
Cheers.
Possibly - I haven't tried it - but I imagine you'll have to work quite fast because of the shorter drying time of acrylics
Great tip Owen!
I'm building Merkava 1:35, and I want to brush paint it. is it possible? do you have tips,, cuz I watch already your video,, but mostly your video is on a smaller scale.
Thanks for the idea, man!

very cool technic! interesting video my friend!
I'd love to see you try to build a jet! Perhaps an English Electric Lightning, or maybe a nice F-8 Crusader?
Перед нанесением краски Вы, чем наносите, водой или растворителем???
Thanks Owen
Could you paint stripes instead of dots? I was thinking of making that airfix BF109E-4 kit.
Hey love the videos just wondering what the wide brush is you use and also were you get it from cheers
I use a 2cm Clear Choice brush from Royal and Langnickel :)
Wher do you buy the paint for your models?
I'm doing a 1/32 fw190. just gonna do a winter scheme I guess. I hate enamels

Are you able to use acrylic paints
Can this be recreated with acrylics?
Quick question. What if we only have or use acrylic?
What you do? Buy some Enamel.
You can't use this specific technique with acrylic.
@@papaaaaaaa2625 oh Okie. Thx bro :)
woooow, awesome tutorial
Thx from 2024 💪🏼
@Quick Kits
Hello :)
Just a question:
Do I need thinners for the revell email (enamel) paint? (No airbrush)
Btw I like that you make videos for people who don't have an airbrush :)
Iller Chiller yes, it's enamel paint.
Great top tip, cheers mate.
Thank you - Good video
Does this work with acrylic paint? Also hello from Australia 👋🏽 love your vids!
Can you do this with acrylic paint?
hi Owen, can acrylic paint do this effect too? or with different techniques?
You probably could do it with acrylics, or you might have to do really thin coats of acrylic on top of each other to build up the faded look instead... I haven't tried yet but I will when I get round to by BF109
Nice video
Awesome. Now I can stop procrastinating building a Hetzer
cool, as usual!
Thanks for the tip.
What if my base paint is enamel, if I put enamel thinner to do the technique won't it ruin my paint underneath?
MoChan.Official i was wondering the exact same thing i would like to know
1 month later, I still don't know.
MoChan.Official relly tho i tried it with a scrap piece of plastic and it didnt work
I think if you apply a varnish over the base coat it will be protected from the thinner. Haven't tried it out myself, but it might work.
@@IIThund3rII Im also thinking that would happen, maybe just dot with increasing amount of thinner added to the paint, and then just add a very thin layer of the base coat over it
Can you do this with acrylic paints
It will be more difficult due to the faster drying time of acrylics
FFS ! I'll NEVER use an airbrush for mottling again !! This looks so convincing when comparing it to colour wartime photos.
What do thinners do ?
+Benn Bridel Thin out the paint, meaning it takes longer to dry and you get thinner coats with less brush strokes and a more even coverage. You can get enamel thinners for enamel paint, or acrylic thinners (or just use water) for acrylic paint :)

can i do it somehow with acrylic?

yea, what i did was just take it on a q tip, dry a bit of it off, and just tap around on it. it worked quite well
FsAviX Gaming Yeah that's a good idea! :)
Tried tamiya acrylics both with thinner and water (not both at the same time) - does not work

@@quickkits I know this is 5 months old but, hey, I got an airbrush now! Oh, and thanks for recommendations for the paints too
Airbrushes are better, but painting with a brush is more fun and gives a feeling nogstolgia in my opinion
Why don't you use airbrushes?
Aristotle Powell He probably has one but he explains it for people like me who can afford it to buy all this stuff
*angry airbrusher noises*
