    For ages I had a thing of turning the wrong way when reversing. For some reason I had it in my head everything is reversed when reversing. Now I just think steer in the direction you want the car to go and that helps a lot.

    Number 2 is my biggest when I'm reversing - I do that exact looking out the back window and getting confused all the time! I'm going to try thinking of just turning the wheel towards where I want to go next time I do a parallel park and see how it goes! When I learnt to drive, I did about 1 part lesson in a car park and maybe did 2/3 bay parks and a handful of parallel parks and that was nearly 10 years ago now, so I've never been the most confident reverser...

      I had a friend who was in the situation of reversing up a hill. 2 fat guys in the back,a small engine and a car way to big for that engine. Tried to go up on one of those steep hills where you can't see the top of it from the car. Went half way on that hill and then the car just refused to go because of all the weight in it. So the guy took a stupid decision since the road was empty. Turned the car with the back and reversed up the hill. 😂😂😂🤣 It worked but no doubt that it was stupid as f**k. If you have any fat frends just throw the out,get to the top and get them back in. Or make them loose weight😁

    Great video your point of not turning right or left is a great one as I used to get caught up in that a lot and got me a bit confused. But I think an interesting point you missed is I find its easy to forget what the front of your car is doing because when your reversing your focusing on the back. What I mean by this is you can be parked right next to the curb, reverse away from the curb but its easy to forget where your front wheels are going and they can easily mount the curb.

    I found after my lessons with the instructor and passing the test, I very quickly started to change how I reversed. I think it might be because of looking around too much. I never had an issue with it mind you, just felt like I was doing unnecessary checks. Not much reason to check around 5 times in the maneuver when you know nobody is around you.

    In my driving lessons I kept steering the wrong way, it was really frustrating because I knew what to do but my brain made me do the opposite. I got better but still did it occasionally right up to a couple of weeks before my test. I don't know what happened but suddenly something clicked. Passed my test 1st time, only a couple of minors. I frequently end up having to reverse down narrow country lanes and streets that are blocked. I come across so many drivers that aren't confident to reverse even if they only have to go a few metres.

    An important point for general manoeuvring is when you are parallel to an obstruction and extremely close to it e.g. a kerb (or a parked car) but need to reverse you cannot get away from it by reversing. You need to initially do a forwards movement with what I call a shallow slalom with straight start and finish to achieve increased parallel width. This allows for front end "wing swing" Years ago to reverse into a side road on the left examiners had to stop you short of the side road so you could choose your width from kerb stopping position before reversing into the side road.

    It's interesting how many people say use the side mirrors to reverse or turn your head, in my car I'm a big fan of turning around and looking out the back window, everything feels more natural that way, this however caused me problems when I got a job driving a massive van where it has no back window to look out of, then I have to rely on my side mirrors and even now I still find that confusing when for years before I've looked out the back window

    On ships they don't talk about the "left side of the ship" and the "right side of the ship". They talk about the "port side" and the "starboard side". And that means that people do not get confused about what side of the ship they are being asked to work on. It seems like nautical thinking about a car, and thinking about the steering wheel like a ship's wheel, might help avoid that turning around and mixing up left and right thing.

    I actually never had any problem reversing. Not that I consider myself an excellent driver, because one can always learn and as soon as you think you are an excellent driver, you are - I think - starting to make mistakes. I have not problems reversing because I sailed. Not with a rudder but (I don't know how to call that in English) but with a stick-rudder. And there you steer the other way when you go forward. Then trained me in have a feeling for both ways of steering and never have the feeling that something is unnatural.
    The point you made with: I want to go that way, so I steer that way, is exactly how it works with me. I must say for me parking backwards in a bay is easier then forward.

    Having wider angled mirrors or those peripheral stick on mirrors helps immensely. I know a lot of cars these days have magnification for some reason. I don't understand it, all I need to know is if there is a car there, not to see if the driver of said car has brushed his teeth or not.

    • @MRrailaway
      @MRrailaway 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Too wide will distort the view though, that's why they're going with narrower mirrors. Also guessing distance will become a problem. Just turn your head, it's pretty easy I find, turns out you have muscles there.

    I am 15 and for some reason I always blow people away when I go to reverse I went out with someone on a closed track type think and did a reverse parking into a bay and they said. "Well I don't really know what you can improve on. I've got to say that's the best I've seen from someone 'New' to driving." BTW I've been driving cars since I was about 7. I learnt to reverse trailers at about 8. I am a bit of a petrol head myself.

    The only reason I got confused reversing was because my driving instructor always used to get her lefts and rights mixed up.
    Every time we'd approach a corner or we'd have to park up, she'd say "turn left at the end of the road" and I'd be like "are you sure?", point left and she'd realize her mistake.
    So whenever I'd park I'd always get confused because she'd be telling me which way to turn the steering wheel to go which direction and I'd do that and the car would somehow end up upside-down.
    I had some funny times with my driving instructor. We got along really well.

    You're number 1 point about your mirror when I look in a car mirror I never just see a small part of it with the rest blurred, a car mirror to me is generally about 4inches by 3 inches and you should use all of it. some cars automatically tilt your nearside mirror to see the kerb better. But you should really try reversing an articulated lorry with a reversing camera, some of them are connected to your steering the same as in a car and because of that if the camera has active guidelines the guidelines will show you to go the opposite way to what you intend. the camera should be linked to the movement of the 5th wheel then the guidelines would be true.

    In my car, my daily driver at least, it's so long (4.8m) and the rear window is so small, that I never turn around to reverse, mirrors all the way.
    When I learned to drive in 1998, my first car was an old Austin Metro and I used to reverse park it in my parents garage and used to practice this on my own on their driveway, by the time I took my test I could reverse just as well as I drive forward. I have very little tolerance for people who can't reverse and won't practice.
    I've actually come across drivers on narrow lanes, who stop, get out and swap seats with their partner because they cannot reverse a car themselves.

    • @SkashTheKitsune
      @SkashTheKitsune 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      in that instance, with my car being so long... the same as yours but my car has a large ass plus a spoiler I'm unable to see over the back unless I'm either on top of the car behind me or even 4 ft away.
      Sure, I could adjust to experience but I find that using my mirrors on thee side gives me the idea of where my bumper corner is and how close it is to the other car behind me, i often reference to other vehicles b pillar and eye it in place, it is surprising how most times my car will fit perfectly because its symmetrical... however there's the odd fool that sometimes decides to intrude into spaces in front or behind them.
      and yes, i always GOAL after so that I can learn from the parking job

      Probably a bmw 118d judging by the fact it dosn't have a slanting back and more of a hatchback look to it. And also it's a diesel because of the revs just guessing its a 118d by the sound of the car.

    Haha people look at their wheel while driving at all? No shit they bump into shit when driving then. If I looked at anything but my mirrors when learning to reverse park the lorry (articulated and without trailer) I'd get a verbal smackdown from my instructor hahaha
