  • This is one of my favorite times of the year. We have a lot of sharks and a lot of bait fish coming in our base systems hungry ready to eat so I try to capitalize on the situation and catch some big old sharks from the beach with spinning tackle. Thanks for watching and tight lines

Never caught a shark bigger then 24”. I’ve hooked some bigger spinners in South Carolina but wasn’t equipped for them. Great job Jack and best wishes going full time as a creater

Been watching a couple guys shark fish with 8500 spinning reels on a hefty surf rod and have been bringing in some big sharks!

These are the kinds of videos that make me want to surf fish every time I can! Just ordered an 8500 Penn Slammer IV paired with a 15' Ugly Stik Bigwater. Should be an incredible first set-up. I'm new so would love some feedback from someone with more experience if you have time. Here are my questions:
    (1) How do you like the Penn Batallion II 12' with this setup? Any idea how that rod would compare with the Ugly Stick 15'?
    (2) Any recommendations on which size braided line to use? I got 300 meters of Daiwa J-Braid (65-lb). The Ugly Stik is only rated for 30-50 lbs so wasn't sure if I should go any higher than 65 lb. I've heard closer to 120-200-lb braided may be better for larger sharks so may need to upgrade my rod in the future for the big boys.
    (3) Any suggestions to my current tackle set-up? I'll be using 210-lb AFW Surflon wire (have heavier wire on order) and 400-lb mono with crimps and a snap swivel for a diamond or spider weight (3-6 oz for smaller sharks, closer to 10 oz for larger sharks). Thanks in advance if you see this comment.

Not an expert by any means myself but here's my 2 cents:
For line I'd do 65-80lb, and would recommend 65lb: more line on your reel = less chance of being spooled and the difference between 65-80lb only makes a big difference if your casting into a really deep cut where your line is rubbing against the bottom (almost never will be an issue with a 12-15ft rod). If your rod is rated for 50lb just don't crank the drag too heavy and you'll be fine. If a monster takes your bait it won't matter whether you have 65lb or 80lb. 120-200lb braid isn't worth it unless you're using large conventional reels and kayaking baits out because you won't have the line capacity you need and thicker line will have less casting distance. Typical leaders for casting are 2 feet of cable or wire (heavier will decrease your bites), then 4-8 feet of heavy mono, 400lb should be fine. Definitely use crimps for this (Wire can just use a haywire twist on each end) The cable/wire is to prevent the shark from biting through and the heavy mono is for preventing abrasion from the shark's skin on your braid. A mono shock leader of 10-50yds and around the same test or a little more than your braid is optional; if you do use one, look up an FG knot to tie the mono to the braid. If you do get into kayaing baits, the leaders get huge because you don't have to cast (6-10ft heavy cable, 20ft 500lb+ mono). Your main parameter is whether you can comfortably cast the rig and the total leader length (not including shock leader) is at least 6". Only other thing is I wouldn't base spider weight size on shark size but on conditions (strength of current), size of bait and how far you have to cast. The smaller size weight you can use and have it stick: makes it easier for the shark to eat without noticing the weight and makes it much easier to cast a little further with less chance of damaging your rod. Would not recommend trying to whip a 10oz spider plus 1-2 pound bait = rod broken.
Also you can experiment with wrapping your hooks (10/0 plus) with electrical tape. Might be bro science about sharks being able to feel the metal but if nothing else reduces rusting.
P.S. Catching your own bait saves a ton of money so invest a little into a smaller rig for hardtails/catfish/whiting, or a little more into something you can catch jack crevalle from the jetty or pier. Good Luck!!

That was sick man. I love that spot, got my Hammerhead there last year!
Question: which GoPro generation do you wear on your chest and with the media mod do you notice a drastic loss in battery life?
Thinking I need to get one for the new 11 I just bought. Your sound quality in this was outstanding

Yea it’s a great spot for sure. But I have a hero 10 with a media mod with a rode external mic. The battery isn’t bad at all but I don’t keep it running though

@Yakin with Jack Sweet, thanks for the info. Only reason I didn't go for the media mod yet is because I was worried about battery life, bit I think I'm gonna get one. Audio is great in this!
