The slow tempo that Angelina masterfully decided to use for that performance, first, gives to that song its utmost original emotional dimension, and, second, fits extremely well with the overall graceful, classy and delightful Norwegian Radio Orchestra s presentation. With her gentle and delicate smile, her delicate melismas and that gorgeous ball dress, Angelina looks so proud to have been invited to sing for that special occasion. And we feel so proud of her. The dazzling feeling of 2016 still remains in 2021.
Both versions are different and amazing. I love them both. She has always been confident and never nervous. If you remember at 7 yo, being one of the last performers that day, she stood in front of that crowd and judges, answered their questions at the beginning and end of the song, and gave a brilliant performance. On AGT, went on stage barefoot, in front of millions, and started the song with a whispering a cappella on key at 13 yo. This is a classic song by Gershwin in 1934 and performed in the opera and later movie Porgy and Bess. It was also performed by Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald whose version was used for the NGT performance. Please see her performance of AT LAST at 8 years old for a charity event or WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD at the Nobel Peace Prize concert at 8 yo. Angelina has a rehearsal video of her in the early stages of playing piano and working out on the piano WRITING ON THE WALL at 10 yo. It gives an idea of how she works out a song. Unfortunately she has never put a finished product of the song on YT. Thanks Dave, btw, please learn "Summertime" on the sax and give us all a little taste!!
You are now one of my favorite reactors. You are clearly seeing the great talent of this girl. She is absolutely at another level. She was 10 years old in this performance. Ask yourself: what did you do when you was 10? This is just incredibly incredible.
I know with Angelina it's a common trap to say 'This one is my favorite', but, I think it might be for me. I love it at the end, she finishes singing, waits for the music to end and she just stands there with a smile on her face as if saying 'I learned the song, I put in the work, I attended the rehearsals, I performed it perfectly, now give me my reward, I earned it!! Then the applause starts and she's just beaming!! Finally, she finishes by giving her trademark micro-curtsey and nearly inaudible thank you. Seriously, how can listening to her never get old?!?!
Summertime is a Gershwin song from the musical Porky and Bess. The rendition from NGT is remarkable because of her age but this version is more masterful. As someone said, she doesn’t get better, she just develops, she changes, but each stage has its own unique perfection. Thanks for your reactions. They are the best.
This version comes close to the original of George Gershwin, who composed this (despite the joyful lyrics) melancholic "cradle song", based on a traditional Ukrainian lullaby, in 1934 for the opera "Porgy and Bess", a folk opera about African-American life. As we know, this song was thereafter covered many, many times and became a huge jazz standard (Billie Holiday 1936, Bob Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong 1957, or instrumentals only: Miles Davis (trumpet), John Coltrane (sax), Bill Hemmans (sax),... and beyond there are pop, rock covers as well: by Billy Stewart, The Beatles, Janis Joplin in the sixties, a sampled version by Sublime/Lana Del Rey called "Doin' Time"... just to name a few.
Every time I hear Angelina sing, I picture her stepping out of an old black & white movie, to transport us back in time, so we can fall in love with these genuine masterpieces again ❤️ 💚 💙 💜 Loving your reactions !!!
Another great reaction to watch, Dave. She was 10 in this performance. George Gershwin wrote the music and his brother, Ira, wrote the lyrics, for the 1935 opera "Porgy and Bess". Your grandpa may have listened to the Ella Fitzgerald rendition with Louis Armstrong playing trumpet (Although not quite the saxophone). I believe this Ella/Louis version is what Angelina, and accompanied Trumpeter, sang on NGT at 8 years of age. This total performance is what I consider being one of her earliest professional displays of musical abilities. Not so much in what she sings but rather how she compliments/adapts/blends, seamlessly like a chameleon, as one of the classical instruments, being an equal, to the rest of the musicians of this Norwegian Radio orchestra. I have a Gershwin instrumental CD with this song & orchestration. It sounds exactly like this video, minus Angelina singing. Was my favorite "Summertime" classic. Now hearing this with Angelina's voice makes this the best version ever for this classic, to me.
This is the song she sang in the finals of NGT, it was done by every jazz singer, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Etta James, etc. but she most closely follows Ella Fitzgerald. If you want to hear her sing low, “Born to Die”, she did a cover that no one can believe it’s actually her singing!
Dave, this is the original version George Gershwin intended. The tempo is supposed to reflect the sleepy, down-south, summer day. A slow, hot summer day with the cork bobbing on the pond and the blue-tick snoozing on the porch. The quintessential jazz-blues opera. And she kills it.
You just have to watch the NGT version as well. Not just because , as you noticed, it's 2 years earlier, but also because it's a completely different arrangement and both performances are absolutely fantastic
Please send a link to Dave for your rescued performance of “How Great Thou Art”. He wants to experience her lower register. I want to watch his jaw drop.
I agree with your comments here Dave. For me it is a different and more nuanced performance than her previous ones. I'm not sure if confidence is the word but certainly her command of the music and interpretation of the lyrics feels different to me. (not comparing to "I Put a Spell on You" which was not a live performance.) Angelina definitely delivers an emotional rendition here and you can see her growth as an artist. Thanks for another great reaction!
Terrific reaction, Dave. This song was from a stage play that premiered in 1935. It was later redone as a movie musical in 1959. Angelina has four (that I know of) versions of this one on TH-cam and I think this one is the best. The NGT performance was wonderful and hits you with that shock value because she is so tiny, but just pure vocal performance, I like this one.
The Norwegian Radio Orchestra (Norwegian, Kringkastingsorkestret, abbreviated as KORK) is a very popular orchestra throughout Scandinavia and beyond. Among the artists it is considered an honor and awards to receive an invitation from KORK. Once again, Angelina proves her musical talent. Regardless of whether it is a capella, acoustic, jazz band or orchestra version, we always experience an amazing Angelina. The conductor's facial expression, his enthusiasm for Angelina's performance says it all. ✌️😎✌️💯 *AJ* 💯👣
👩🏻🎤🎵🌎⭐️🇳🇴❤️ This is a beautiful rendition of Summertime by Angelina, and I love the full orchestra accompaniment. It is different from her finals performance of Summertime on NGT, but because they are so different I see no reason why you can't react to both versions.
@@george40nelson4 Exactly. I am hoping someone in the movie industry will hear "Shield" and some James Bond songs she has sung and commission her to do one.
Nice ! On the subject of versatility, you could contrast Nothing Breaks Like A Heart, The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, and I'd Rather Go Blind, among so many others. She really can slip into any style.
Angelina's two versions are wonderful studies of what she can do given the chance with either a canned-music track or a live orchestra. I also note that this is the same conductor we've seen in other videos. (George Gershwin, from his 1935 Broadway play PORGY AND BESS.)
Folks, when you rewatch this video, we need a count of how many faces Dave makes in even those final 20 seconds. I think he's going for a world record. And I suspect AJ fans know those faces all too well...
You paid good attention to her changing low range. She could always hit low notes, but in this one they're more sustained and richer. Thanks for a great reaction!
Dave, another great reaction. But I have to say that I have never seen a performance by Angelina where she seemed even one bit lacking in confidence. For example, she was asked if she was nervous about performing in front of Simon Cowell before her Bohemian Performance on AGTC 2020. She immediately responded "no I'm excited." And she had also acknowledged that AGTC was the biggest opportunity of her life. And she went out and nailed all three performances with no sign of being nervous. This is a performer who knows and trusts her voice under all conditions.
Kevin Neal I understand why you chose this one but for me and probably many others Angelina's vocal on the NGT is absolutely amazing. Actually though I like this one I prefer the NGT version and her vocals there.
Cool reaction -thanks! "Summertime -and the livin' is easy". (maybe next summer) Not jealous of kids lives these days. I've seen her clinging to the microphone just a couple of times. She changes her approach to this song each time. Can't wait for her new version of this. You'll never know.
Thanks for doing this version of Summertime Dave. Such a completely different arrangement than the NGT performance at 7 years old. Angelina has been a consummate professional since NGT and never lacking confidence in her ability and the gift she has. The KORK orchestra of Norway is generally a big deal and privilege to be invited to sing with them, which she has a few times. Personally I believe the privilege is all theirs to have Angelina sing with them. You still need to check out her Winning performance on NGT of Summertime...will blow your mind. BTW Angelina has a 100 different voices she choses from depending on what song it is. Versatile...very much so.
great observation,,,,,,,,for y ears i was going for the version on the talent show, because its easy to love it immediately,,,,but last few days i focused more on this version and its a beauty but you have to really more then just listen to it and be thankful for the orchestra how they help Angelina to blossom in a very gentle way,,,,,,,,,,she is so much more then we realize,,,,,,,thanx
If you happen to react to her live performance of the MJ song "I'll be there" you have to know that she was sick at the time and had a hoarse voice, but funnily enough for that very reason the performance in connection with the meaning of the song turned out to be even more beautiful in my opinion.

Hard to believe we have a musician that isn't familiar with "Summertime". This is probably on every list of top ten jazz classics. You may want to listen several covers/versions of this one Dave, you can pick almost any artist, they've all done it.
I have heard this maybe once or twice years ago. It’s faintly familer but if you played this before I did this reaction I would not have placed it haha.
Dave, you didn’t get confidence from Angelina at 9 years old when she killed it with I Put a Spell on You? Or with Feelin Good? Or Bohemian Rhapsody? Her style is not to flaunt her talents, but her singing shows me that she knows exactly what she wants to give us, and she delivers that with ease and confidence.
Hi Dave, to answer your question, this song is SUMMERTIME from the musical "Porgy and Bess" by George Gershwin. In wikipedia it said it is from 1935. They discovered another video with Angelina with the full version of the song. I think its from her Korea performance, where she sang in front of 40.000 people just before Nora Johns.
She changed the arrangement of this song to slow it down. The orchestra had been playing it too fast for her taste during rehearsals, so she re wrote the arrangement. She did the same thing when she was 9 years old and changed the arrangement for "I put a spell on you".
Song is from George Gershwin as Porky and Bess. You should have learned it & played it for your Grandfather ! But us Grandfathers are very forgiving. LOL
