RAID OVER MOSCOW | Commodore 64 (1984)

  • Raid Over Moscow, for the Commodore 64, and The USSR have launched a huge attack on the USA, and the only hope for the free world is for you (as leader of a US Squadron of fighters) to destroy their defense bases. This is done in a multi-stage action game with some similarities to the same developer's Beach Head. All the mini-games must be completed before the time limit on the bomb is expired
The first thing you will see is a missile being launched; the game then takes you to your hangar, from which you must quickly launch as many ships as possible, a task made difficult by the limited gravity. You must then fly it into Soviet airspace in a side-view shoot 'em up section, in which staying low keeps you safe from radars, and quick reactions see you shoot enemy fighters and avoid trees

This was a great game, but possibly like most people I gave up on it - I was very young and struggled to control the craft and never figured out to open the doors, so this video is spot on!
I went back to it a couple of years later, read the instructions and breezed out the hanger and what a great game that followed - loved playing through and completing this on a regular basis - awesome!!! 👍

That sounds like the exact same problems as I had as a kid until eventually I read the manual and absolutely loved this classic 😄🕹👌

This game and the Beach Head games made me think I had something no one else knew about while everyone I knew was playing Super Mario Bros.
Rudely difficult, frankly, but SO MUCH fun. The animation was really impressive for the time, especially the rotational aspect of the launch mini-game.

You're right there, a lot of my friends who had prosperous parents could afford the new consoles on the market... alas, I stuck with the C64 and was never disappointed with its array of awesome games. This was no exception, pure classic. I'd rather play this than Mario anyway 🤣🕹👌

This game caused a huge controversy in Finland back in it's day, which is hard to imagine now. Great, atmospheric graphics (if a bit too much grey), splendid animations and unique and mood uplifting, exciting sound effects made this game a real gem. I got stuck at shooting the capital building with the bazooka, as I never knew what I was supposed to do after shooting everything possible.
Challenging, but responsive gameplay and the satisfaction the player gets when shooting something big ensured the success of Raid Over Moscow.
As a sidenote; I can't believe anyone had trouble in getting out from the hangar - it's just the normal inertia-control that is in many games ever since Thrust and Gravitar, just in isometric mode.

A challenging game, yeah I think it was banned in a lot of European countries back in the day. That hanger caused a lot of grief for many back in the day 😄🕹👌

I loved this game! I remember having trouble in the hangar at first as well. It took me a while to understand that you had to use the fire button to elevate the aircraft before opening the hangar door.
I've finished this game many times! Maybe it's a good time to fire it back up and play again for nostalgia! 😊

A brilliant semi sequel to Beach head. I remember this causing a lot of controversy when it came out. Eventually being re-titled to just Raid! for its spectrum and amstrad releases. I remember the excitement and sense of achievement when i first reached the Kremlin screen. Like everyone took ages to master the hanger screen especially without instructions *cough* 😂

I think we've all been stuck in that bloody hangar for ages, but once you manage it, it becomes easy as pie. This was a great game, and I am a bit upset you didn't show the coolest thing - blasting one of the minarets off the top of the Kremlin and bringing it crashing down tip first onto the Soviet tank trying to shoot you! LOL, you're forgiven. Absolute gem, glad you covered it.

Another classic, although I was too young to understand the ideological controversy surrounding the game, until it came out on the Speccy and the name was truncated to Raid, all that aside It was a great game to play and I did enjoy trying to blow up parts of the Soviet Union. Really nice game especially for that era, reminds me a bit of the Firefox movie ; But that door :P. My tactic is to stay low most of the time get it stable not to far from the door, climb just enough to be able to open door, F7 and then quickly make a dive for it :) If you love Zaxxon, you are going to like this one as well
