    Excellent info. I found your channel years ago, you helped me mod valve body and build correctly my 4L80E about 4 years ago. 2005 2500hd @ 225000mi. still working perfectly. Years ago had built several old school 700r4/th400/th350/c4/c6/m22/tremecT15? but never the newer electronic models, your advice is very much appreciated. Job well done my friend! Thank You!

    Thanks for the info. I've heard they were prone to failure. Nice to know what exactly happens. I've already got rid of my thermostat and added an additional trans cooler.

    There should be a recall on this from GM!! Been many a transmission toasted because of this!

    My 6L80 got up to 280*f before I noticed it. I’ve changed the fluid, bypassed the thermostat and installed a 40k cooler.
    I’ve also used my HP Tuner to eliminate lock up in 1st through 4th gear and my transmission rarely gets over 145*f even when I beat on it now. Full videos on my TH-cam channel. 🦅🇺🇸

    The problem is the metal ,it comes from a failing torque converter.If there's metal in the thermostat the coolers will already be plugged. The converters are the weak link. If trans temp is running high remove the cooler manifold and empty the cooler circuit from the coolers in the reverse flow into a clean clear plastic one gallon jug,If you find metal the convert and the cooler in the radiator will be restricted if not plugged, once the metal is in the cooler it cannot all be removed. Fix where the metal is coming from them replace the radiator and inspect the aux. Cooler if it's a manifold type flow aux. Cooler it too will have to be replaced. If you look closely at the radiator cooler inside the connector fitting you will see the cooler is prefarated it has tiny holes throughout the plates it a very efficient design but works like a filter,If you leave the metal from a previous failed unit it will soon be visiting the replacement unit . Stop trying to reinvent the wheel the problem is the wheel.

    I live in Cincinnati and I’m about to do mine. I’m a little bit concerned when it gets to be 14 or 15° out but I always let mine warm up always have and I always will. Hopefully this will help. I have noticed my transmission on my 2021 Silverado will stick at 174° and not move at all once it gets up to 174°. It starts shifting very strange but up to that point it shifts like butter and it only shift strange when I come to a complete stop and it jumps from 2 down too 1
    But like they say Chevrolet Ford dodge ram, it doesn’t matter what company it is they’re out to sell cars so they’re gonna make their stuff as cheap as possible so it breaks down as quick as possible and we as consumers have to find ways around their nonsense and this is one more way to keep your transmission safe or at least last longer

    6L80s & 90s have been coming in to my shop for similar and TC failures. Then parts are getting extremely harder to find. 🤦🏻‍♀️

    • @AutomaticTransmission
      @AutomaticTransmission  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, I have to stock for multiple units and still run out of parts quickly. And torque converter also are on back order and hard to get. I usually keep one of each, 80/90 and order the ones needed for the ones I'm working on and still get stuck sometimes.

    I have 3 trucks with the cooler t-stat bypass. Were in northern MI and the biggest issue is some odd/harsh shifting, especially when the fluid is cold. The worst is that goofy 2-3 shift.

    • @AutomaticTransmission
      @AutomaticTransmission  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's probably the compensator feed limit valve dragging on the closed position. Also if it's an LT motor if you installed the springs from the shift kit on the clutch select valves it will give you a 2-3 bind up or double shift.
      If the Trans Adapts were not reset will also give you an issue there and on reverse delayed or hard engagement.

    • @jewllake
      @jewllake 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did this on my 8 speed. The only adverse affect I have is a firm 2-1 down shift when coming to a gradual stop the first few times when cold. Once it warms up it smooths out. Small price to pay to eliminate the stupid thermostat.

    • @robp418
      @robp418 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No problems for me on my 8l90e. I run the Mobil 1 synthetic LV ATF HP and it shifts like butter. Used to have a goofy 1-2 shift every now and then before I changed the fluid and the thermostat.

    Thank you now I no what is actually happening inside the transmission with this valve and it's not just a tork coveter issue..yes we have a 20017 Silverado V 6. We are doing the delete kit . wondering my trans cooler lines are in the radiator so we're thinking it would be fine as the old style tranny were to...we are also doing the 4 cylinder disabler..I mean uneven were to the motor comes to mind out side of a lifter fail..

    as a tech, are you able to tell if you’re seeing failures with the torque converter after you do the modification?

    • @AutomaticTransmission
      @AutomaticTransmission  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have not seen a connection to converter failures after doing this. Keeps your fluid cooler and the fluid properties last longer. Good fluid makes for a good working torque converter clutch. Heat deteriorates fluid properties causing converter clutch premature wear.

      @@AutomaticTransmission thank you my concern is does it cause issues if it’s running too cold say 120 130°?? I’m not sure if and how that impacts the internal operation of the transmission. Just curious from your perspective.
