I m a more Dessay style of person, but i know that Damrau is one of the most briliant and talented opera singers we have and and we really need her in the opera! I don't know why but for me Dessay and Damrau are the new (lighter ofcourse) Callas and Sutherland.
Being An Anomaly I am very much aware of the fact she is 'in character'. But I meant her acting on stage in general. I don't like her general overacting. She has a nice voice, but I can't watch her perfomances.
As Diana said once, 'when you have your cadenza you are free and you can do what you want if it is in style'. The high G is just lovely. Why shouldn't she sing it?
This is absolutely the best the world has to offer in this voice type! Technically impeccable, oozing with fun and charm and such an amazing sound! Brava!!!
I'd kill to see someone like Damrau live in an opera! It's almost like she's incapable of making mistakes or singing ugly notes. And on top of that she's also great at acting :D.
Her technique is absolutley FANTASTIC! Perhaps not so big as to be a true dramatic coloratura, but what a lush and sexy voice. I'm completely floored! You could likley hear those high notes over any orchestra.
This is hands down the quintessential version of this song. Shes not only stunning vocally but she ACTS which is unheard of in the opera world. Notice the way she acts her way through the moments shes not singing. This is brilliant!
People below make unwarrented comments on her acting. This is a concert performance not a staged play. She captures perfectly the conflict of Cunegonde who is tempted to give up her true self for the venal temptaions of wealth and fame. What more can we ask than this conflict be presented in the performance which Damrau does .
um, I totally believe her. She is the first person I've heard sing this song where what she is feeling actually crafts the sound (ie. the laughter on "ah ha!"). She is amazing in this performance... lots of fire, fun, her character actually comes to life instead of just standing there trying to make pretty sounds come out of her mouth.
The original person to sing this song professionally was Barbara Cook in 1956 in the original Broadway cast of "Candide." Cook was the orignal Cunegonde (the character that sings this song) on Broadway.
Wow, I'm not going to pretend to know much about opera, but this is my favorite version of this I've seen on youtube [The first I saw was Kristins, I'm a huge fan of hers so I clicked the link]. I found most of the other preformances to be boring and unispired- this one is lovely! It's funny, and she doesn't overdo it like Kristin does, although I know she does that on purpose. Diana Damrau is so talented!
An even better version of this with Diana is this one: th-cam.com/video/oByViX0t-IE/w-d-xo.html The orchestra is more consistent. It seems in this one (the one I'm currently commenting on) Diana is waiting for the orchestra to catch up in certain phrases.
I'm just impressed... I think she's the best coloratura soprano of our days, but it's not only her voice and range, its her acting, so full of energy, she seems to be so confortable that her singing appears to be easy. Definately, my fav opera singer... in all senses.
Diana Damrau is beyond reproach. Period. Amazing! People, stop being critical to try and prove how many words you know. None of us can do what she is doing. I love the high F at 5:16 and that she ends an exhausting 7-min piece by tossing off a high A-flat!!! Genius.
Chenoweth is fantastic. She certainly was more entertaining than Damrau. However, I will say that her voice pales in comparison to Damrau's. This performance was amazing at the musical level, while Chenoweth's was amazing in the performance aspect of it.
Chris R. chenoweth isn’t just a comedian with an ok voice. she’s an actress who handles drama INCREDIBLY well, and can sing the house down. i turned this woman’s off very quickly. this is not her song. she’s incredibly talented but i couldn’t deal with her doing this unintelligible song that’s just her showing off that she can hit high notes. we already know that cuz we’ve all seen her in magic flute
OMG! This gave me chills. Of course, Dessay and Chenoweth aren't too bad either performing this wonderful tune. Nice to see that so many people love Candide.
Amazing voice (admittedly better than Chenoweth, whom I adore), but I feel the acting was interpreted way to literally. It would be, IMHO, a bad performance in the context of the satire; I would opt to see Chenoweth any day if it were staged. Still Damrau has the powerhouse vocals, and still makes an exceptional performance for this piece.
Idk, Chenoweth's performance didn't seem to be very grounded in character to me-- rather, just a mishmash of gimmicks. She goes for a laugh by braying "Fraaaaance" and it gets a laugh because it's silly, but it's *Chenoweth* being silly. To me, Damrau's humor comes from Cunegonde expressing the contradiction between her upbringing and her genuine feelings about her situation.
esta version es espectacular y me quedo definitivamente con esta...esa libertad vocal de diana te atrapa pues resulta tan natural que captas todo lo que siente, excelente, kristin nunca podra superarla, la violencia de su interpretacion es lo mejor.
Count me in as her fan. WOWOWOWOW Also she knows how to negotiate the lower range, excellent diction, acting, stage presence, musicality... She doesn't project anger, so much as self-doubt and conflicted feelings (in a comic manner) at the low end of the manic/depression cycle.
It's a great description, hands down. Damrau had what it takes to separate herself from just being a great singer to being a Diva, an opera superstar. Not only she sings whatever there's to sing, but her acting, from this comedic piece, to being a full fledged villain as the queen of the night. And she nails it, even without listening to her voice, you know what is happening because her face and her body tell the story.
Thank you for putting this up! This is the best clip I've seen this year... Diana Damrau is fantastic, not only does she sing like a godess, but she can act as well.
I never would have searched this up if it hadn't been recommended for me. Acting with that much expression while hitting those kinds of notes? That was insane
I love Kristin and I love her rendition but I have to say...the end of this video...those notes...incredible! They took my breath away. I agree, I love Kristin and her performance is hilarious and amazing in its own respect (plus I can better understand her) but the end of this video is breathtaking...
I love -love- her laugh at 2:45... just amazing voice control. Of the entire song, that's the part that gets me the most! She's just incredible. (She's also absolutely beautiful.. still amazes me to this day after my original introduction to her- years ago- as the Queen of the Night!)
Cheno's version is comic and she's a great singer, perfect for an operetta, which Candide is. If some opera snobs turn their nose up because she's not an opera diva, who cares? But hellz YEAH Damrau rules!
I love this version! I think Diana is a great actress and every note she sings is absolutely flawless. They are so easy for her! This is vastly different of course to her singing the role of Queen of the Night but I really think it proves her versatility.
wow that's magnificent! Her high F is AWESOME! And she's a great actor also her english took a whie for me to understand, but it's clear after a few times. This was agaun AWESOME!
Take inspiration from the other video of Damrau doing this. I've never seen such free, genuinely expressive movement around the stage, it's just pouring out of her incredible performing intellect and is not held back by anything at all. I can't imagine a more comic way of performing it. Chenoweth's performances are funny but they just seem choreographed and a bit trite in places next to what Damrau can do when she lets go, especially as in the other video! That's just what I think...
wow... just wow... i'm in love... i saw her as Pamina in The Magic Flute at the Met. She was playing both the queen and Pamina this last season.... Insane... wow...
She's the Meryl Streep of opera
Weirdly I was just thinking this.... 6 years later 😂
@@clevm002 Me too
Mustafa Dujak wowwww Lol I was just thinking this. She looks just like her right here
In this level is bad a comparisions.
She must have won a lot of Oscars😅

Her acting freaks me out, but her singing is untouched.
Being An Anomaly I am very much aware of the fact she is 'in character'. But I meant her acting on stage in general. I don't like her general overacting. She has a nice voice, but I can't watch her perfomances.
Check out Natalie Dessay. She does not overdo the acting as much and she is better at singing this aria than Damrau.
She is definetely one of the best singers I've ever heard, she gives me goosebumps every time!
Her voice is marvelously dark, and her acting is perfect! Love the madness in her eyes, and the added high note at 5:16.
Em
As Diana said once, 'when you have your cadenza you are free and you can do what you want if it is in style'. The high G is just lovely. Why shouldn't she sing it?
In 6:38 it's a high G hehe!!!
*Just Saying*

That f6 was perfect
I LOVE her voice. There is no better rendition of this as far as I'm concerned. Those stratospheric notes are fantastic!
An ARTIST, is what she is. The best version, ever..
This is hands down the quintessential version of this song. Shes not only stunning vocally but she ACTS which is unheard of in the opera world. Notice the way she acts her way through the moments shes not singing. This is brilliant!
The BEST version par excellence is that of ROBERTA PETERS👌🏻
Superbe performance! Not only superior voice, with incredible high notes but also mastery of mimic and scene.
Great Diana!
She is a wonderful singer and actor!
The best soprano over all with the most powerful voice
This is the best the best rendition of this aria that I have heard. BRAVA, DIVA DAMRAU!
People below make unwarrented comments on her acting. This is a concert performance not a staged play. She captures perfectly the conflict of Cunegonde who is tempted to give up her true self for the venal temptaions of wealth and fame. You acting isn't required in a concert version of something? lord
um, I totally believe her. She is the first person I've heard sing this song where what she is feeling actually crafts the sound (ie. the laughter on "ah ha!"). She is amazing in this performance... lots of fire, fun, her character actually comes to life instead of just standing there trying to make pretty sounds come out of her mouth.
The best version. Queen of Opera
I am breathless!!!!!!!!!!!! What a woman! What a diva! What a singer! What a coloratura! What a charmer! What a German Queen!!! OMG!!!!!!
wow, she's terrific. every syllable has dramatic motivation. i love her.
Agree 100%. Diana can afford doing as much vocal pirouettes as she desires. Her gracefulness does not have any limits.
The original person to sing this song professionally was Barbara Cook in 1956 in the original Broadway cast of "Candide." Cook was the orignal Cunegonde (the character that sings this song) on Broadway.
What a clear, strong and amazing voice and interpretation of this hard aria! Brava!

Me encantaría escucharla en vivo alguna ves ❤
5:13 - putting this time stamp here for anybody who is going through a tough day or a week because this can totally pick you up 😊
Finally someone other than Cheno who can put some believable humor into this song. Loved the slightly crazed look and amazing vocal control. Bravo!
oh, she's fabulous
incredible. love the dark tone - very unique among sopranos who most of the time sound tinny, thin and like they're straining o'ermuch.
wow... never have seen a performance like this, adorable... what a talented woman... God bless her
natalie dessay and diana damrau are assets and good examples for new generations sopranos
You know, I thought of the queen if the night singing this. I was like, she must've been drunk.
fathersenpi_anewweeaboo she acts like that cause it suposed to be a COMEDY
She relishes the high notes and incorporates pitch-perfect, maniacal laughter better than anyone
Diana Damrau is beyond reproach.
Period.

What I enjoy most about this video is the fact that she intertwined the acting and singing phenomenally. It is amazing.
chenoweth is a comedian with an ok voice.
diana damraus rendition and acting is on a higher level plus she has the voice.
i wouldn't say acting. chenoweth is more familiar to show business, reading an audience, and character.
Chenoweth is fantastic. She certainly was more entertaining than Damrau. However, I will say that her voice pales in comparison to Damrau's. This performance was amazing at the musical level, while Chenoweth's was amazing in the performance aspect of it.

Wow, Diana has great power to her voice. I love everything about this video. She does justice to Leonard Bernstein.
Oh my, that was pretty amazing! This is the first i have heard of Damrau- but i shall definitely be looking up other stuff, after this!
She cracks me up, her little giggles are soooo funny. Her German accent adds humour as well. and that F, DAMN. wow
OMG! This gave me chills. Of course, Dessay and Chenoweth aren't too bad either performing this wonderful tune. Nice to see that so many people love Candide.
Pure control of her voice! She can differneciate shouting and singing very well... her chest voice is wonderful too!
