    Phil, your devotion to duty is admirable! We have a particular interest in the XPT replacement as residents of the Mid-North Coast. I don't expect too much though, probably less comfortable seats and worse catering. But wifi would be a great improvement. Extra speed is probably too much to hope for. it's funny, I've grown to quite like the old XPTs.

      @Martindyna 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Yes probably harder seats. Top speed is the same but acceleration likely to be better and regardless of number of carriages since they are Diesel Electric Multiple Units (DEMUs). Fuel consumption I imagine will be less too.

    As someone who trained to Brisbane in a seat, it is INSANITY that these trains don't seem to have sleepers. The furthest an all-seat train should go is Dubbo, or maybe Griffith.

    • @Martindyna
      @Martindyna 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @@scottietheshark Indeed, Sleeper trains should be encouraged as an agreeable alternative to air travel. As Long Regionals they replace XPT's that replaced the one time Daylight Expresses. Notice that one of the middle cars appears to be a buffet / dining car so the service of providing munchies for the regional passengers continues. As awful as it would be to ride on these new trains between Mel-Syd for 11hrs, from what I have heard the current sleeper XPT's running that route are going to remain around for a little while yet because of demand, and following the new trains eventual introduction on the route I believe the public response will be evaluated to consider later adding new sleeping cars. Though as with anything going through the political system, it is up in the air.

    Hopefully, like the XPT, their first service is the current, Central West XPT service. My 'local' service, along withe Bathurst Bullet with the horrid commuter seats (horrid for 3+ hours, and if tall) of the Endeavours. For those commenting about the lack of sleepers, in which I agree, remember the XPT didn't get sleepers till 1990. My main concern is seat comfort. Hopefully they're just as comfy, or more comfy, than the current XPT seats...though I have my doubts.

    " and finally the XPT replacement trains.
    I assume that 3 replacement trains for XPT Endevour & Explorer will vary quite a bit but do we know yet whether there will be any sleeper cabins added to the long haul Syd Melb zxPT replacement trains? And I assume the section in the middle of the first train with no windows was the "buffet car" , I hope it has one ?! The orangey colour and branding will take a bit of getting used to ( unless they plan to change it) . I like the current XPT 's blue colour scheme.
    By the time these new replacement trains are tested and on the tracks, they will be obsolete. I estimate 2030 - 2032 before they are in service eventhough 2026 2027 is being mentioned. Maybe there will be high speed trains instead before they ever go into service

    I wonder if, as a stop gap, an XPT service could be retained Sydney to Melbourne consisting of all or mainly existing XPT Sleeper cars but retaining the Buffet car.
    It would perhaps not stop as often as the usual train schedule (since it’s function would be for long distance passengers mainly) which would save fuel and wear & tear. It could run only on certain days of the week (around the weekend?).

    CAF's trains take a while to get used to aesthetically, our Class 195/331s in the UK looked crap when they first entered service but have grown on me. These look rather nice tbh other than minor design things for me which I'd label as me being nitpicky.
    But choosing CAF as a manufacturer? Bold move, I can't wait to see these trains break down in the middle of nowhere due to a software issue. All of CAF's UK units have had software issues which have taken a while to fix, I would not be surprised if these did too. Also no sleepers on a 12 hour route? Again, bold move.
