He's probably remembering it as it used to be. Classic AMG cars were extremely expensive and held their value because very few were produced and they were built carefully by hand. Nowadays AMG means nothing. You can get a v6 c class with "AMG" ground effects as a optional package. Gone are the days of resale value in a Mercedes. If you want one, wait 5 years, they'll come down in price 70%
Jay is right, look at the prices now, one's in good condition are already costing 60k again. Give it a few more years and it will be worth more than it did originally cost. Those are the last cars with a big, naturally aspirated engine. Even the 2013 C63 507 is slowly starting to rise it's price again.
Thanks Jay, great video as usual, keeo them coming. Recently bought a renault, thought french cars were really bad, but I was pleasantly surprised. Do you have a renault section in your garage?
Yes, great car! A few year's ago I took a friend to a Mecedes dealer and saw one of these used 2011 models on the lot. It was Storm Red Metallic with a beige top, though not an AMG. She didn't buy anything, but I have the car I saw that day in my garage.

Jay Leno is so right this car will be a collectible years from now, sure it's going to depreciate first but, 40 or 50 years from now you probably will not be able to buy one for what it cost at the moment. look at the 300 Original Gullwing.
sorry to correct you jay but the amg speedshift mct is no double clutch gearbox. it's rather an automatic gearbox without the torque converter (it uses a wet clutch to launch the car).
I agree with Jay, not really my kinda car however the sound of that NA V8 is intoxicating. When you put your foot down its instant go time and it always makes you smile. Maybe in a few years I can get a used C63.
Jay, that's not a double clutch transmission. As far as I know it's basically the normal automatic transmission but instead of the torque converter there's a wet clutch. It could be confused with a DCT because it has "MCT - Multi Clutch Technology", but that name comes from the clutches that do the gear change, the drive clutch is still a single clutch unit.

Jay the transmission is not a dual clutch. Mercedes used a multi disc clutch instead of a torque converter. The transmission is a regular 7 speed automatic. Also it's has 465 pot not 600. I'm sitting here thinking something doesn't sound right.
Buyer Beware: Here is a brief summary of my experience owning a 2003 Mercedes SL500. I bought this car from a local exotic car dealer in 2009. The car had 34,000 miles, looked gorgeous and drove great but the maintenance costs skyrocketed over time. I kept the car for four years and drove it a total of only 12,000 miles. It cost me $16,000 during these 4 years to keep the car running well and and I lost another $16,000 in depreciation costs when I sold it. The only thing that saved me from complete disaster was a very good extended warranty that covered many of the repairs. The warranty cost $4,000 for 3 years. My Lexus extended warranty, by comparison cost $1,200 for 6 years, but I have never needed to use it.
jay, I had this same SL63 and changed it for an SLS. I really disliked the SLS ! I think the handling is squirelly, it's uncomfortable for a long trip, and the headlights are weak. On a trip back from the AMG Factory to France in heavy rain the wipers were overcome on the Autobahn, it was very scary! I've ordered a new SL63 with the twin-turbo motor. As you said and I wholly agree, the SL63 is much better for touring and 90% max performance. Thanks again for your great reviews.
I have an SLS as well. Totally different drive than an SL, it’s not meant for long trips and the headlight’s definitely aren’t weak. It’s a modern classic already. I hope you didn’t sell the SLS for the SL based on each cars value alone right now.

I use them and then change them when a newer more exciting model comes along. As to the SLS, it's simply dreadful with the lousiest handling, the rear end would get loose under even modest acceleration in turns. @@fomavictorevitch if you’ve owned 20 Ferrari’s, what was your selling point to go back to an Audi? Most people, even very financially well off, would hardly call those amounts “small sums”, especially when talking about cars which normally depreciate in value. ohc, the wierd think is, that the engine befor it was dohc. the only weak point of mercedes v8's are actually the chaindrive and the fact that the exhaust, as well as the intake kind of limit there power and the electronics are hard to tune. other then that they are pretty solid.

Shibing Huang POORSH
It doesnt make a difference in how you pronounce it. You still know what hes saying. If you get irate from that then you need to grow up.
There is one for sale 2009 MB SL 63 AMG for $36,000 with 40,000mi on it. I think it’s a steal. Assuming these were built well and low maintenance.
Burnout? that's a doughnut! Great job Jay!
You can buy a 06 E55 AMG with 60k miles for $20k. That's a steal.
+rompn4x While that's a great car and that's a lot of car for that price point, you'll probably spend another $10K in maintenance in the first year or so. Still, that's probably what I'd go with if that was my budget.
The high repair costs is what keeps me from buying one.
thats actually pretty reasonable i got my e550 for 7k, and ive seen e55s go for around 12k
breakdown cost could be that much !
@@eriktml me too....buying one..lol
Brilliant! Thank you Sir :)
I wish Jay would still soon cars in his newer videos
why not enjoy both, jay for car history and MCM for DIY know-how,
jay ive always wondered if you ever went crazy in a car... 0:17 yes my friend you did. that ups the cool factor. pulling a stunt like that in a rather pricy car
Shut up about the video qualiy and just enjoy the best car channel on TH-cam.
Totally agree about the weight, I have both the 03 SL55 and 10 SL63 and wished they had made the hood, roof and trunk lid out of carbon fibre... But then if they had done that it would have only been affordable to the Jay Leno's of the world... lol
Jay you are my hero
ohc, the wierd think is, that the engine befor it was dohc. the only weak point of mercedes v8's are actually the chaindrive and the fact that the exhaust, as well as the intake kind of limit there power and the electronics are hard to tune. other then that they are pretty solid.
That my friend is a whole shot AKA burn out! Nice car.
MAN THAT NOISE!!!!!
They're older videos taken off of the website.
My 1990 300SEL has over 100K miles. How much exactly? IDK since the odometer stopped @ 106
What was that on the hood at the :32 mark? It looked like a camera.
That exhaust note!
Jay, are you still putting that SLS AMG engine in your '69?
And it costs around 60-70 thousand dollars now though, wich is pretty cool!
50 now
Its about emissions regulations. The V12 is limited to 186.
