Flower Power Cruise 2024 | Is this version of Chicago now the best?

  • Danny Seraphine was one of the founders of the band Chicago Transit Authority, soon known simply as Chicago. As the band's original drummer, Danny performed and contributed his songwriting talents for over 22 years, 1967-2000.
Danny Seraphine was a big reason the band Chicago was founded when he approached his friends Walter Parazaider and Terry Kath about leaving the cover band they were in and starting a new band with a horn section. They added other members and eventually the band we know as Chicago was formed. I saw them in 1973, standing right in front of the stage at the Amarillo Civic Center Colosseum. Through the years I’ve seen them many times, including a fan club performance in Las Vegas celebrating their 25th anniversary. They’ve gone through personnel changes through the years (Kath’s tragic and untimely death in 1978) and the departure of Peter Cetera in 1985, replaced by Jason Scheff, son of former Elvis bassist. I saw Chicago five years ago but my seats were not that great and I was less impressed with the replacements for Jason. But what Seraphine has done with California Transit Authority is truly amazing. My wife and I were sitting second row center on this Flower Power Cruise. Wow. We were greatly impressed and so happy to see Danny up front where you really get to experience his amazing skills as a drummer. The precision and strength are almost super human and he has a unique style which you immediately recognize as representing Chicago. He may be 75 year old, but no way would I want to get in a fight with him. Not that that would ever happen, he’s a genuinely nice guy; I was fortunate to meet him and shake hands. Seraphine has aligned himself with some of the best musicians available, not to mention his own playing which is now even better than ever. So judge for yourself. What do you think about this version of Chicago featuring Jeff Coffey performing bass and the Peter Cetera songs?

The best version of Chicago was the original with Terry Kath. It was special. This isn't bad but there is NO comparison. The best band playing Chicago tunes today is the Russian band Leonid & Friends. And I loved Danny playing those Slingerlands live in the original band. His new use of a double bass drum pedal..not so much. His original drum fills were iconic and almost like etched in stone. They were part of the fabric of the songs. My take anyway. 🤔

This title is correct compared to Chicago 2024 …this group, CTA blows that band off the stage (even without Lee and Jimmy on horns). Sorry it’s about the singer and drummer. Chicago of later years lost a great singer in Jeff Coffey. It’s not even close with the new guy! Danny still plays his parts incredibly well and he was the original drummer on all the great hit songs! God Bless Danny … keep it going!

seraphine was out same reason Petty kicked Lynch out. They were original members of their respective bands. but becuase THEY don't write all te songs (now Lynch is a great songwriter) and they asked about financials and what not, likely because THEY got no royalties and they are memebers of the bands. But they want drummers to shut up. Really they sadid he wasn't playing good anymore. BS. I mean really, as muchas I love Chicago have you hear Champlin try to sing in his blues and R and B style. Horrid. Drummers are meant to shut up in their eyes and the one who occupies the throne is king of nothing. Now, watching the documentary obviously Pankow had some issue with Seraphine. Kind of like the same crap that finally did glenn Frey in. Hate.
