In a scene here that was just cut out of the video where Canute asks Thorfinn who he might have taken after in regards to his new eloquent manner of speech, I believe he is prodding at Thorfinn over a hint of fatherly influence he may have had from Askeladd or maybe just bringing it into question since he remembers Askeladd to have been a very well spoken and conversationally adept man, this hit me kind of hard because Thorfinn has only recently come to a state of mind where he can honestly take in these kinds of thoughts without violently rejecting them immediately. Just something I think I read pretty well out of that scene that I haven't seen many people touch on or realize that I thought I'd share.

Askeladd was so good with words to the point King Sweyn kept his eyes on him.

In the anime it's probably meant to imply that Thorfinn has taken aspects from both Thors and Askeladd whereas in the manga it's clear cut that it's Askeladd.
His ability to negotiate probably came from Askeladd whereas his ideals came from his father hence why Canute wonders who he has taken after in the anime as he never met Thors.

Thorfinn in episode 9 (Oath): "Einar, i have used these hands to kill people. People whose names I did not even know, people i bore no grudge against"
Episode 23: Roald, son of grim (snake) becomes first of names that thorfinn came to know after managing to save people.

Canute seeks human happiness through the vision of a state with a monopoly on violence and a secure environment by disarming belligerent communities. This sociological approach can also be found in Hobbs's Leviathan. In contrast, Thorfinn seeks to create an anarchic, libertarian community where each individual cooperates.
It's an opposition between rationalism and optimism.
The 2 figures respect each other because they make up for each other's structural and libertarian shortcomings.
Season 3 will confront Thorfinn with his violent past and the limits of his non-violent ideology. Season 4 will focus on building his community and the practical difficulties of applying such an optimistic ideology in a violent, chaotic world, echoing Canute's more rational, authoritarian approach.

After the amount of PAIN we've been through the last couple of episodes you almost can't be happy without the fear of something going wrong 😅 from the intense conversations between Thorfinn and Canute to the very last moments where it seems impossible for the episode to conclude on a positive note. You almost expect a random whale to emerge from the sea and swallow them along with their ship.
