Hey guys I have some advice for you all. If you dont like this version of the song with Kenny G, DONT CLICK ON A VIDEO THAT SAYS " Kenny G Featuring Louis Armstrong"! If you want to hear the original...go look it up! This one clearly says that Kenny G is in it. I personally like it. I like both the original and this one. Dont hate on Kenny when the title warns you that he is in it.
I can't help but feel that there is a whole lot of hate going on in these comment for a song about how beautiful the world is and how wonderful the human race is capable of being. I find this sad. I don't know this Kenny G fellow at all, but he is obviously talented at what he does. Even if he weren't, I believe that Lewis Armstrong would have been delighted to have had even a child singing this alongside him on stage. Be kind or be quiet people. Peace.
WHAT A MASTER PIECE. THIS SONG WAS ORIGINALLY WAS OFFERED TO TONY BENNETT TO RECORD. HE TURN IT DOWN. SO THAT'S WHEN THE WRITERS OF THE SONG ASK LOUIS ARMSTRONG TO RECORDED. NATURALLY HE SAID YES. THE RECORD COMPANY DID NOT PROMOTE THE SONG BECAUSE THE PERSON THAT WAS RUNNING THE COMPANY AT THE TIME DID NOT LIKE IT. I ONLY SOLD 1000 COPIES IN THE U.S. IN 1967=1968. IT HIT THE TOP 10 IN THE UK. YEARS LATER, IT HAS SOLD MILLIONS AND MILLIONS OF COPIES. INDUCTED IN THE GRAMMYHALL A FAME IN 1999.
*-* ... Do any of you "haters" stop to think about what you are doing? The message of this song is to recognize the beauty that is out there for us all to see and experience. Do YOUR contributions to this world make it a better place- or simply add to the pain, the angst, and suffering of others? Kenny G and Louis Armstrong contributed by sharing their talent and a bit of happiness. I am thankful, and receive it as a gift to enjoy- not criticize.
Like I said, froggyhurts137- they both contributed to this world. I am aware of the origins of the song. I remain thankful, rather than critical, for their individual talents and the happiness it brings to me and others.. I agree- Louis Armstrong's jazz legacy shines far beyond this one memorable song.
I know everyone hates Kenny G, but what if I, an average high school sax player, were to play this song over Armstrong. I'd probably get comments like "Cool idea", "nice work", and "Keep it up". But when Kenny G did it, people hated all the more and claimed he was comparing himself to Armstrong. Just food for thought...
@thepakibye Gotcha ^_^, I live a bit of a sheltered, not very social existence, so it is common for me not to know stuff like this that may be common knowledge for others. Thanks for filling me in. Peace be with you ^_^
So much money to be made easily by adding a low quality overdub over a high quality song. This is great! I think I'll e-mail Justin Bieber and tell him to overdub his voice over Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven.
@hebrewhammershabbat Just for the record, I did know what psuedo meant; I just didn't know what the difference was between fake jazz and real jazz. As I stated before, I don't really have much of an ear for this sort of stuff and can't really pick out the differences like a practiced ear such as your's or my sister's could; I just know what I like. I'm very glad that we understand each-other now though; I feel that I can now sympathize with those who are angry at this better. Thank you ^_^
is it not funny that people think they are showing the world how talented they are by what music they like ? it is kinda like, i am a great athlete because my favorite team always wins, lol
For all of you who cannot appreciate beautiful music, regardless of the artist(s), take your filthy comments elsewhere. Using that language shows your mentality.
As a Pat Metheny Puritan awoke one bizarro morning from troubled, metamorphic dreams, He found himself transformed in his bed into the monstrous, evil incarnate KENNY G, screaming, ''Must eat Satcho's Brain'',
*****,, guys like you just don't have a sense of humor,, Putting the original Satchmo tune in the good morning Vietnam movie is like the ISIS terrorists playing it during a beheading?
@JazzKeyboardist1 What a bizarre thing to say! you think all us Kenny G non-appreciators are in fact just jealous of his immense wealth? it is noting to do with his soft-focus easy listening repulsive muzak? most people i know would be homeless if they weren't paid for 3 months. the only person i ever met who liked Kenny G was a saxophonist at university who had a pink saxophone......i can put you in touch if you like? and by the way, it's not 'work' hating Kenny G.....work requires effort......
Because he's not all that great at all, he just holds a note and people g crazy because most people don't know a thing about jazz anyway. Not only that but Louis Armstrong is one f the most influential jazz artists and dubbed his shit on top of it, it's akin to Justin Bieber (i know, i know) singing over a pink floyd or black sabbath track
Urgh, just discovered this today because of a Pat Metheny's quote about it. Nothing else to add, except that a groovebox would sound better than this awkward drumming.
@hebrewhammershabbat for simply wishing to know what it feels like to play alongside a long gone idol, I would instead recommend focusing your efforts on some of these youtube videos that use Lewis Armstrong's ORIGINAL track whilst flashing images of war, violence, suffering, and other man-made negatives in the world. Now, I'm not one to pretend to know what a long gone artist would or would not approve of,
@hebrewhammershabbat I admit I don't really know what psuedo-jazz is, but I'm not the most knowledgeable person about such things; the one you need is likely my sister. She is the music buff in the family. However, the only way something like this would be illegal is if he made money off of it. Simply posting this on youtube hardly constitutes a crime. I guess what I'm saying is; if you're going to waste energy getting angry at a talented musician, which you can't deny that this Kenny is,
Some people obviously do not realize that satchmos estate gave permission for this, and they knew kenny g's abilities,,,,, some people act like they have a mission or calling to silence Kenny G, like some people have against world hunger, racial injustice etc lol,,, the worst necrophilia was MLK jr' s, estate giving permission to use him for the ad for alcatel, and no, i do not like kenny but he sounded decent with Jeff Lorber
@hebrewhammershabbat I'm afraid that I don't see what is so disrespectful about it. If anything, I would say that this would be a great homage to him. Saying that this is disrespectful would be like saying that preforming one of Shakespear's plays years after his and all the original actor's deaths is disrespectful. People don't do things like this to disrespect a man or woman; they do it to keep it alive in our hearts and to feel like they are a part of something greater.
@hebrewhammershabbat but THOSE are the videos that DESERVE your hatred because they truly DO fly in the face of everything Lewis was trying to accomplish with this song. However, this is simply my opinion.
@TVThemeDoctor lol, it is funny that a lot of the people that hate kenny g, are about three paychecks from being homeless or being kicked out of their parents basements,,, but keep up the good work of hating kenny g,
"‘When Kenny G decided that it was appropriate for him to defile the music of the man (Louis Armstrong) who is probably the greatest jazz musician that has ever lived by spewing his lame-ass, jive, pseudo bluesy, out-of-tune, noodling, wimped out, fucked up playing all over one of the great Louis’ tracks (even one of his lesser ones), he did something that I would not have imagined possible" - Pat Metheney
@fishqwer I'm too unfamiliar with jazz and have a too undevelopped ear to be able to judge even half what Pat said in that interview; but I just don't hear this Kenny G guy bringing anything valuable to this song... I've listened to a couple of his tracks (only recently found out he exists), and they just bore me :s
@hebrewhammershabbat Fair enough; I suppose I can understand that. You are angry because you feel that this is a defilement of the jazz style that Lewis popularized, where as I reserve my anger for those that defile the MEANING of the song. This is an interesting clash of opinions; I kind of like the comparison. You are obviously a musically minded person, where as I am a writer and tend to focus on the words and poetry of the song. Interesting.
@JazzKeyboardist1 mas·och·ism n. 1. The deriving of sexual gratification, or the tendency to derive sexual gratification, from being physically or emotionally abused 2. The deriving of pleasure, or the tendency to derive pleasure, from being humiliated or mistreated, either by another or by oneself 3. A willingness or tendency to subject oneself to unpleasant or trying experiences Right let's see here... number 1-nope number 2-nope again number 3-ah yes! well done my friend!!!! hahahahahahah
Erm...Louis Armstrong did not CONTRIBUTE, he made the original song. Kenny G merely did a cover...and decided to make it "feat Louis Armstrong." Also, his depth and understanding of jazz is not exactly wide...so he should not be altering such a revered piece of jazz...and his "improv" of this song is an improv of an improv...simply ridiculous.
Hey guys I have some advice for you all. If you dont like this version of the song with Kenny G, DONT CLICK ON A VIDEO THAT SAYS " Kenny G Featuring Louis Armstrong"! Did Pat Metheny give his approval to put the original tune in the Good Morning Vietnam movie?
@fishqwer This is a Pat Metheny quote
how do i obtain a high-quality version of this?
is it not funny that people think they are showing the world how talented they are by what music they like ? it is kinda like, i am a great athlete because my favorite team always wins, lol

Why did he overdub it?
interesting

number 1-nope
number 2-nope again
number 3-ah yes! well done my friend!!!! hahahahahahah
I just hope Louis Armstrong didn't really record with Kenny G man...
Kenny G constantly plays flat and had the audacity to overdub on an incredible tune by a now dead musician.
Erm...Louis Armstrong did not CONTRIBUTE, he made the original song. Kenny G merely did a cover...and decided to make it "feat Louis Armstrong."

This is a soprano buddy.
