Moment Tudor announced this watch I was hooked. Yes it’s bland and simple. But that’s what I love about it. The simplicity. Was in Melbourne for the weekend and stopped by the Tudor boutique. Instantly hooked. Came back 2 days after and bought it. Been my daily driver since. And loving it more everyday.
I was lucky enough to pick one up at my AD while I was picking up a few serviced watches. I bought it on the bracelet and I love the size and the "boring" design. Can't wait to try some other strap options. Great video!!
Great video as usual Max, for me it's the tone of lume. I think their standard creamy ivory or even a modern tint of C3 green hue would've been better to my eye. Of course a crisp clean white tone would've worked as well but might've felt too modern for a Tudor outside of the Pelagos. I hope to see a PRO variation w/3D applied lume in the future.
Max… nice to see a creative and positive spin on a long anticipated watch that hasn’t received very much praised thus far. I’m looking forward to getting my hands on one in person so I can make my own opinion!
I just picked up the Ranger on a bracelet and the more I wear it the more I like it. It is low-key, uncomplicated, and masculine. A perfect no-nonsense field watch I can wear every day.
I think you’re right! Showing it on a variety of straps makes me like it more. It’s funny how our brain works, that a watch could look totally different not by changing the watch, but by changing its environment! Great idea!
Great video, thank you. When I first saw the ranger I thought it looked ok but was a no for me as I already own a few black bays and it looked too plain. OMG I was so wrong when I happened to be in my AD and tried one on. It just popped straight away when I put it on the wrist. It was a lot more appealing and I bought it there and then. I’m also a person that does not like to wear watches that say ‘look at me I’m wearing a ?’ This is very much under the radar and 95% of people would not even know you were wearing a Tudor. It’s a modern watch that looks older than it is and especially living in London I’m not at all worried about wearing this out and about. Very much like the Omega railmaster .
I discovered the new IWC XX and tried it on .. now THAT'S the watch to get. Fantastic quality, amazing dial... just the complete package (especially when the steel bracelet will come out).... oh its superb
@@WatchCrunchOfficial after trying my first IWC as well as JLC for the first time, I'm realising that the Rolex hype and wait lists can be ignored.... there is so much out there that's totally brilliant, available and more affordable Honestly though, that IWC reminded me of my old Speedy 1861 with the stark contrasting dial and white seconds hand, but it's thinner , smaller and more water proof ... the Speedy will be missed but I think I've found my Goldilocks watch finally
I really like the Ranger having seen it in the flesh. I didn't purchase not just for the reasons already shared but I already have watches that fit this space. I've not ruled it out by any means for another look in the future though. Looking at the watch on different straps certainly makes it 'sing' better than on the bracelet so maybe another visit to the AD in the future is on the cards. We shall see. Thanks for sharing Max, a great idea and something of an eye opener trying it on the different straps.
Great video! I love the look of this watch, in fact, I own a San Martin with almost exact dimensions, so I can well imagine how it would do on the same straps I use. Holben's are fantastic and I am a regular customer. I would also recommend the Haveston canvas straps. I love them for the summer and they are very comfortable. I think the Ranger would look fantastic on one.
After a lot of deliberation, I picked mine up a week ago and I have to be honest I’m not disappointed at all on the hybrid rubber strap I think it’s fantastic
I totally agree, the pics I saw online on the bracelet and I didn’t like it…but I did like the strap options…today I went window shopping and the jeweler had one on the green nato and I made the mistake of trying it on…so I am now the very happy owner of a new Ranger on the green nato strap…looking forward to trying it out on a variety of others…I was looking for a well done tool watch and am very happy with my purchase…thx for the recommendations where to find more straps…
The lume colour, the vacant matte lifeless dial, the "butt plug" hour hand, the flat brushed uninspired case finishing, the 39mm case size, the awkward proportions etc. I agree that the Ranger will suit a lot of straps, but the reason for that being it's such a bland watch. This is a huge miss for Tudor, I hope they follow-up with some iterations over the next few years that address just how average and boring this release is. Yes it's half the price of an Explorer, but it's not even close to competeing with the Rolex. The new 36mm Rolex Explorer is absolutely 🔥, very close to being a perfect watch, regardless of your wrist size. Thanks for the video, fantastic as always!
I don't think Tudor plans to "fix" anything with the Ranger, it's intentionally the way it is. If you want shiny, you'll need to spend more for the Rolex.
@@Furniture121 I think there is a middle ground between shiny and boring to be found. There is no "light and shade" to be found on the Ranger. It's so one-dimmensional. I guess it's all subjective, but being an Industrial Designer it just looks like lazy design. The BB58 is every bit as much of a tool watch and utilises polished/brushed surface finishes and a mixed CMF to great effect. I think Tudor will change it, a few tweaks and trims here and there would work wonders for this watch IMO
I disagree. The Rolex Explorer is just their version of this. Bland and overated, doesn't even have micro adjust. When I tried the 36mm on the wrist at AD it looked like wearing a ladies watch too.
Taste in watches is in the eye of the beholder… plain is not always dull and elaborate isn’t always crazy… with that being said, I do like this watch and it will be in my collection…
Another good idea, Max, and so glad I subscribed to this channel! Having seen one in the metal I think it looks better than pics and vids might have you think. That said, next to a Black Bay 36, well that just popped. If they'd only made the indices 3D like the Pro, my goodness what a difference. A watch full of conundrums: it's I guess supposed to be all-business and for a well-made piece that will last and has such a good movement, priced well and nails the brief. On the bracelet, too much brushed steel and yet it's a great bracelet at the price-point....close but no cigar. Not for me but it does deserve a fan-base.
Great content Max. I think this one was meant for straps and will be a true strap monster. Saving up money now so I can purchase later this year. Keep up the great work.
I got one from AD, Ranger on bracelet, so comfortable. I sat on the decision for 2-3 days because I also had similar feelings about the watch. But, it just grew on me and TBH I say it is the perfect watch for an imperfect guy (me). The thing just felt right? If that makes sense? Now I can't look at my Ranger with thinking about Jessica Alba 😀
I went to the Tudor boutique on Champs Élysées this afternoon and finally tried the Ranger. It does definitely look bigger than 39mm the bracelet links have fairly sharp angles. Don’t know how it would wear after a few hours the clasp and micro adjustment are very good It’s clearly a watch I would wear But I very clearly prefer my Sinn 556 A. Also tried a demo only Silver 925 BlackBay 58. I was surprised how tarnished the case was, given this was sitting in a window of what could be called a flagship Tudor boutique in Paris.
I mostly like it. Nice dial design and handset. I do think it could be a good starter design for a more balanced go anywhere, do anything watch. I would make it a face a sandwich dial. Go slightly blacker than the almost charcoal currently on the dial. Bring back the rose. Maybe go one mm smaller to 38mn... And bring a a bit of polish to the bezel. That would be a perfect balance between elegance and sporty. Probably would bump the price up a touch but would be more attractive and strike a great balance.
Agree saw this on the bracelet and it did nothing for me. On the hybrid strap looked totally different and walked out the AD with this on my wrist. Love the brushed case and the fact that the dial is clean and uncluttered. It’s currently on my wrist on a dark green NATO. Agree change the strap change the watch and currently waiting for a couple of watch Steward MN style straps to turn up for something different. Going to enjoy putting different straps on this watch.
Great review! Love the "Jessica Alba" comparison. Everybody is entitled to make their own opinions on how a watch looks. Just bought a Ranger... looks plain and simple but SOLIDLY built. Strap this simple looking watch with fine clothes and you can come up with a Clint Eastwood... classic but rugged and comes with a magnum movement... just my humble opinion
Best video on the Ranger yet imo, nice work. I’m looking to pick one up at the end of the year and I must say I like it on the bund. Do you reckon a bund would suit my BB36? Got me interested
Hi Max, thanks for your content! I just got the metal bracelet for my Vertex M100 and I must say the Vertex M100 on a steel bracelet is the better watch for the bracket the Tudor Ranger is aiming at. The Tudor is jus a little to boring. The Vertex has some very interesting tweaks and a very solid heritage as well.
Love the ranger... My day job is selling modern design and the font, scale of everything is perfect. . The box crystal which everyone calls a dome is perfect throwback to the Plexi crystals of yesteryear. I think they will age very nicely.
The design of this model was just what I was looking for in my next watch. The clean unassuming face with a brushed steel case/bracelet and solid build quality that doesn't attract attention. I do change out the bracelet for various straps and it works well. The Ranger fits my style of a luxury daily driver like a Toyota Land Cruiser, well done Tudor.
I love the simplicity of this watch. While my Tudor GMT looks perfect on a bracelet, I think this Ranger would look perfect on a variety of straps and that's enough reason for me to put it on my list of possible "Next" watches.
I love this style of watch. Its simple aesthetic is what draws me to it. I picked up a Longines Spirit at a £600 discount from an AD and I'm seriously considering buying this one. However I do miss the Rose branding of its predecessor. To dedicate a watch to your wife and children is part of the Watches story.
Don’t take it off the bracelet!!! Strap monster…Ugh… applies to just about every neutral watch! But what does not apply to most watches is having the best bracelet on the market, which this one does. 20 mm, fully brushed, smooth taper unlike this stepped bracelet on the 58, ceramic ball bearings T-fit clasp… better than any Rolex bracelet…. Even the submariner that has the glide lock does not have ceramic ball bearings. So keep it on the bracelet… and choose one of your many other watches for straps.
I can't wait till my bund gets in!!!!! Great video, and I agree, I really think this watch is going to grow on people in the coming months. The versatile simplicity creates so many options, and like you said, the size is PERFECT.
I like it! It's simple and tells the time, what more do you need from a watch? I think it looks great on some of the leather straps which adds to it's rather plain make up.
I can’t understand the hate for this watch. I think it’s the perfect field watch. For those who think it’s “bland” or “boring”, that’s what field watches are. Saying you want a field watch that’s more shiny or exciting is like saying you want a sports car that’s more comfortable and quiet. Are you sure you know what you want? I gotta check out Holben’s leather… their Bund strap is sharp! Great video, thanks!
This is very much how I feel too. I totally get why this watch might not be to everyone’s taste and that’s totally fine. Personally I like it but there are of course things I’d prefer were different if given the choice, no watch is perfect after all. But to criticise it for being too bland or boring is kind of missing the point of a field or Explorer style watch isn’t it? To borrow your very apt car analogy it’s like buying a low and lean sports car and then complaining that you can’t take it off-roading. Or buying a reasonably priced, very sensible and spacious family car with excellent fuel economy and then feeing aggrieved that it doesn’t have the performance when you take it to the race track. To me the fantasy I’m buying with this sort of watch is that although it’s just a boring three hander, it accompanies the wearer on their adventures. You do exciting or adventurous things when wearing it and that’s what makes it cool rather than the other way around.
@@derosa1989 I'd say it's not that, it's just Bland. Many of us love field watches like hamiton, seiko alpinist, etc.. but man this watch is way off, finishing looks bad, the watch has no definitive eye catching feature, the numerals are printed, the lume of the hands don't match the lume of the numerals, other reviews mentioned the bracelt being sharp, the dial is just out of proportion, it's a mess. It's only great features are the movment and clasp, other than that, it's hot garbage. And for 3000 dollars!!
An overall excellent review thank you. If I did not own a Rolex explorer 39mm I would buy this. Regarding your comments about in-house versus ETA movements : I recently (two months ago) bought a new BB59 with the in house movement. It stopped regularly and the power reserve was less than 24 hours. My AD replaced it without question. I have had my BB36 for 6 years (with it's ETA 2824 modified movement}, worn it hard and regularly and it has run faultlessly. Is it goes !
Appreciate the straps but the jury is out on this watch...some days I can't wait to pick one up, and other days, I'm saying phew. You dodged a bullet. I love the channel and appreciate the great content.
The 1016 Explorer has perfect proportions, the Ranger not so much (too much negative space in 39mm). I am a Tudor fan (my favorite watch in my collection is my BB58), but I am on the fence about the Ranger. I'll hold my judgment until I see it in person. It does look good on the bund strap.
Was looking forward to Max’s take on this. I passed on the Ranger, especially as I recently got the call for a Sub date. I saw the Ranger on a steel bracelet and something was missing. The biggest issue on the bracelet are the sharp edges of the clasp. Feels very cheap. My Black Bay 36 blue dial is a much better “field watch”, with a much better finish. If it has the T-Fit clasp, it would be perfect.
I've not seen this watch in person yet, but the reason I'm not a huge fan of it is not that I think it's bland. Rather, I think it's clunky. It seems too large for what it's supposed to do. There's a lot of empty space on the dial, and the case is so slab-sided that it appears really thick. It reminds me of the back bay case, which also comes across as very chunky. And when you compare that to the vintage ranger or modern explorer cases, it really starts to look unrefined. Might not be the case in person, but that's what pictures suggest to me.
I’m so excited, how so different people from next part of world can gets similar thoughts about 😅 I’m waiting Ranger 38-39 very long time and when is coming I said ok it’s done but I don’t want immediately, but is so beautiful field watch maybe best ever was made, and they must be on strap, but I need this bracelet for my bb58 silver so I should got it 😅 thanks for great review my friend Max 👍👏👏
I own the 41mm and it's the watch I wear the most of all my 18 watches. No its definitely not the watch if you want to stand out. But it's simplicity means it goes with anything I wear. Brown or black leather. Natos. Works on any strap but this watch doesn't work on a bracelet. And I like the larger size. makes it more masculine. I still think that 36mm is to small for anything but a dress watch on my 6.875 in wrist.
Now I want a Tudor Alba.. uh, I mean Ranger. Yes, u sold me on Jessica Alba. But, you also sold me on the potential for what straps can add to a plain average Jane looking watch. I have to admit over watching or listening to something recently about the Ranger, I'm not sure if I'd put my money down on one (yet). But, this makes for a perfect gift watch (not suggesting from you or anyone, 😂) that I could see actually wearing more often than not. Idk? Perhaps the financial release to get a "plain looking watch" opens me up to accepting it more? Idk? But, I could certainly see if this was a gift for a relative or good friend that it could be a cherished and very appreciated watch.. not just for it's brand and price point.. I around or just under $3k isn't super cheap, but it's also not super expensive either for what you get. Max you should be a lawyer cause you always bring a compelling story and convincing case. Look forward to your next video.
This is hilarious. The bracelet and the case are the only things good about the watch. Changing the strap still leaves you looking at that homely face.
I went to collect a Ranger from my AD last month and ended up leaving it in the shop. The hands were poorly finished with rough edges and they had some contamination on them. Also once you notice its basically a stripped down 58 it’s hard to un notice it. Things were made worse by the fact I was wearing my 3861 Speedmaster on that day which is a Original icon and a incredible watch while the Ranger is a lazy Explorer homage. I don’t like the direction Rolex is taking Tudor. Rather than having a vintage Rolex flavour like they used too they are now using Tudor as a full on retro homage brand. It’s probably going to sell them more watches but I wouldn’t buy another one. All you hear now is people constantly making references to Rolex when talking about Tudor. To spend that sort of money on something that’s constantly referred to as second best or a cheaper Rolex isn’t very appealing to me.
I can’t exactly point out what’s wrong with this new Ranger. Is it the empty space on the dial, is it that it is missing some polished beveled areas, or accents on the bracelet? Is it the green lume? The flat hans? So far this watch can’t light my fire.
On the brown leather strap it really does look nice but I still dunno about the ranger... How can it be that I love that bracelet but I really don't dig it on the watch....
Personally id modify the ranger to have: 1) ranger text in red 2) No vintage cream coloured numerals/text. Add white numerals text with modern blue lume 3) Depth to the painted numerals and markers (either applied like we see with the north flag/BB pro/pelagos, or have it elegantly thickly painted. 4) text stating either water resistance or the chronometer text.
I still prefer the previous Ranger 41mm dial than this one. Unfortunately at 41mm all dial its too big for me, and this 39mm kinda looks pretty big on his wrist too.

Looks on point on the bund 😊
I love the blandness. A bland watch grows more beautiful every time you look at it. A busy dial often does the oppostite.
I wish people would stop saying "70 hours weekend-proof movement" for sports watches that are clearly designed to be worn during weekends.
I very much like the painted-on chapter markings. But would it have killed them to add a subtle date feature? Probably.
Nice video Max! Most of those straps look very good with the watch, but not a fan of bund straps.
Just the video I needed thanks a lot 👌🏻
I like it! It's simple and tells the time, what more do you need from a watch? I think it looks great on some of the leather straps which adds to it's rather plain make up.
People are overstimulated these days ;)
Love the it. From the first image to now still in love with it. But well I like it simple.
How about links in the description to the strap makers you refer to?
@WatchChrunchOfficial155 Sod off you fake scammer butt munching no talent ass clown.
How is the lume on this watch? It's said that it was not great on the former model
It's actually pretty easy - most people have really really bad taste, and don't recognize a classic when they see one.
Too much dial, nasty acorn hour hand, the 1016 has completely different proportions, that is a bit of a silly comparison imho.
@@derosa1989 Actually it’s pretty easy; GATEKEEPING WATCH SNOB ALERT! GATEKEEPER WATCH SNOB ALERT! 😆😂🤣
Think its a briliant design, and I was very surprised to see al the flak it got.
Jessica Alba = Average face ? She is Gorgeous !!!!
Average sized features. She's hot 🔥🥵
Jessica Alba is gorgeous.
Appreciate the straps but the jury is out on this watch...some days I can't wait to pick one up, and other days, I'm saying phew. You dodged a bullet. I love the channel and appreciate the great content.
Haha, I think that means skip it 😅
@@WatchCrunchOfficial well, atleast for now
fun fact , the term strap monster was coined by Urban Gentry , go check out his watch channel
Been watching him since the beginning!
I think you are right on. Very good video, thanks!
Just curious...what is that knife? Looks class.
Not sure of brand but it's damascus steel
Where can I get that light brown strap!? ❤️
The Nato? That was a no name one I found in my drawer, I think it's shell cordovan actually!
That blue stingray!!! Thumbs up 👍🏽
The best!
I'd have preferred white lume; it'd have popped more!
I wish that only the hands and hour markers were green, and everything else that's green was white (or much lighter green).
How does Ranger compare with Omega Railmaster?
I've not seen this watch in person yet, but the reason I'm not a huge fan of it is not that I think it's bland. Rather, I think it's clunky. It seems too large for what it's supposed to do. There's a lot of empty space on the dial, and the case is so slab-sided that it appears really thick. It reminds me of the back bay case, which also comes across as very chunky. And when you compare that to the vintage ranger or modern explorer cases, it really starts to look unrefined. Might not be the case in person, but that's what pictures suggest to me.
Where in the PNW are you guys?
Seattle!
@@WatchCrunchOfficial Nice! I'm in PDX. Good stuff Max, keep up the great work!
The size is amazing! Thanks my dude, great to hear from ya 😉👍
Nope, a new strap does NOT help. You are removing the best part of this watch. T-Fit clasp is better than that dial.
T-Fit or not T-Fit :)
I also think they should've kept the red second hand. It was a nice pop on the 41 👍
Now I want a Tudor Alba.. uh, I mean Ranger.
You are so right❤
Is that a vintage swiss army knife on the background? 😱😱
Haha I wish. It is Damascus steel though 🙌
@@WatchCrunchOfficial haha ok! I was quite surprised when I saw it. Nice video about the Tudor Ranger 👌
You are right.... strap monster!!
😎🤙
Are you located in Minnesota?
Negative, PNW
10-4. I’m from the PNW but now live in the mid west. Gods video
Bund strap makes every oversized watch looks great, it’s not the watch, it’s the strap
You have inspired me to put my SINN 556 A RS on a brown bund strap. Maybe not the original point of the video …. But thanks.
I can’t exactly point out what’s wrong with this new Ranger. Is it the empty space on the dial, is it that it is missing some polished beveled areas, or accents on the bracelet? Is it the green lume? The flat hans? So far this watch can’t light my fire.
Would a paragraph on the dial help? :)
On the brown leather strap it really does look nice but I still dunno about the ranger... How can it be that I love that bracelet but I really don't dig it on the watch....
Interesting point.
I think it's super clean....if anything offer it with a white face along side the black
I got Omega 2502 because I don't want to wait. Haha
Might pick one up in bronze when it no doubt comes out further down the line.
That'd be sweet
I doubt it..
I don’t think it works on all straps. Bund straps worked but not the others.
Are we wrong about the TUDOR Ranger? No! :)
I still prefer the previous Ranger 41mm dial than this one. Unfortunately at 41mm all dial its too big for me, and this 39mm kinda looks pretty big on his wrist too.
