"He even has Ice Cream..." - Nalo Town viewer/citizen(?); the Manapua Man is the Hawaii's equivalent of the Ice Cream Man (for the State Side/Mainland)...
In Moiliili in the 1950s the manapua man was an old man walking down the road with a pole and two pails at the end, calling out. A manapua was 5 cents. So ono.
Last time I was Back home on Oahu, in the Salt Lake area Dan the manapua man for the area was still coming by just like in 1979. He had a new van cause his old white Chevy van finally died. The memories of getting pork hash and rice cake after school almost everyday. I hope he still there next time I visit!
Blessings to all the manapua trucks. I remember visiting family in 2000s and having a truck go thru the neighborhood. Many flavours of bao, malasadas, you name it.
Reminds me of Wahiawa running to my mailbox and stopping the manapua man getting my spam musubi and ice cream with some lee hee mui that was back in the 90s been in San Diego since then I miss these memories for sure🥰
Now they gotta find Aaron- the famous shave ice guy who posted up in front of Big Save in Kapa'a on Kauai for my whole childhood. Nobody has done it better since!
When I had money, I used to buy the fried noodles in the 70s. Add a little shoyu. OMG Sometimes, the honey twist or the rice cake. Yum, so ono! Sometimes, the candy--Chicko stick, Astro pop, & Fusen gum. Hana butta days. Lol Only thing, you get too much stuff,.. watch out, somebody going high jack you, or scab off you. 😅🤣😂
I’m so happy to see kind tradition. My island is also known for the same traditions. It’s what we looked forward to during breaks at school and in plaza court yards while shopping. Basically those trucks were very vital because major business chains did not exist are were a rare moment to see one. So we lived off Mom & Pop stores and mobile trucks. We are cousin islands! 🌺🇵🇷🫶
This guy comes by my workplace in kaneohe every other day around 10am. Usually always try to catch him when he comes by cause the food is good quality and cheap also. Bought a plate of look funn the other day for like $4, can't beat that especially with all the inflation going on recently
We had this in Hilo side but I think it was exclusively Ice Cream on big island but eventually he stopped coming around even before covid. The ohana and Aloha spirit couldn't pay his bills. From what I understand you have your be financial above ordinary by quite a lot to continue this service. Nostalgia is good and menu is ono kine but it truly is a dying tradition.
People on the mainland, unless they are from Hawaii, won't know what "manapua" is. "Manapua" is word unique to Hawaii. "Bao" is what Chinese people call "manapua". So if you can find Chinese people in your area (or just go to any Chinese restaurant in your area), and ask them for "bao", they'll tell you where to find some. Most dim sum restaurants will serve bao, but they'll likely be very tiny. It's unlikely they'll be big ones like they sell in Hawaii.
I know, we got spoiled . We was over there in the late 70s to early 80, we went to a little place called the Monapua Factory. My daughter and I found Bao at Trader Joe's, the are good, but not even close.
One time when I was intermediate, I bought fried noodles in from the manapua man, and had one dead fly inside. Next day I told him, "Eh! I like my money back! Had one fly inside my noodles!!" He yelled at me, "You no make rye!!! No mo' FRY in my FLY noodle!!!!!"
Why these guys all have accents, not from here kine? Lol, I recall these were in the housings areas, saw them when visiting. The old guy with the two cans and wood pole was our guy. We also had the green bakery truck, sold pastries and delivered bread.
Campbell HS 1977 only 25 cents each!
I remember growing up in waimanalo there were at least 5 trucks going through the neighborhood back in the 70's and 80's 😋😁
The only stranger in a white panel van we kids trusted growing up in the north shore. Lol
I used to always buy the bag of noodles, pork hash, manapua and potato salad with shoyu on top. Yes I was a hungry kid. What a great memory!
My favorite was the noodles.
I was just telling a friend from the mainland about the manapua trucks we used to have. So happy to see it still exists
Brah what are you talking about? Get everywhere in ewa beach they just have secret spots
I lived in Kahaluu in the late 60's great memories of the Manapua man. Steamed pork buns, rice candy etc.... so happy he still exists.
I miss this manapua man we always would see him outside our apartment in waipahu I miss those days but now we live in Vegas)

Maybe there is a franchise opportunity...MANAPUA VAN! (MAN)
Please come to Kaimuki!
Can’t beat that!! Back in the days always looked for the manapua man and the ice cream man!
I can smell the van from here in Colorado and I still remember my Manapua mans name when I was a kid in Waimanalo during the ‘80s. Better times

Love this...

Never got full plate lunches at the manapua truck growing up
Always a staple in the 70s and 80s. My young son couldn't wait for his daily noodle treat.
I remember the OG manapua man in kalihi early 1970s,those were the good old days 🤙👊
It's been 9 years since I last saw one in my neighborhood, good old days back then 🤙
HES STILL HERE I NEVER SAW HIM IN YEARS HUHHHH
They have all my brother favorite food I also miss the fried noodles
Wonder If he sells some bento boxes.
Blessings be upon you and your family!
The man is 100% correct, it is all about the Ohana.
Wow shocking the state not trying to ban the manapua man like the rest of hawaii's long practiced activities.
As long as they have visible DOH placard + ALL foodstuffs need to be made in Certified kitchen
Why has it stopped?

I miss Hawaii.

@@joanhawkins8552 The 70's and 80's were a good time to be in Hawaii. Way too many problems now.
Run away, no matter how delicious the odor, if it is Long Pig
Manapua man is like Michael Meyer from Halloween, he never die. He just come back with more pimped out van.
