I need your help! I replaced my steam wand with the one that you also use but I can not prepare moxe creamy milk. the reason is because the milk is burnt very fast due to very high pressure of steam from the new wand. what am I doing wrong ?
Just take a minute to appreciate how much effort this man has put behind recording every minute step for a greater good. Kudos Tom! I was able to upgrade mine successfully! Was it complex - seemingly, was it fun doing it on my own - ABSOLUTELY. THANK YOU!
I used this to successfully replaced the steam wand. Thank you! I also like to share a trick which helped in pushing the white nylon piece into the steam wand easily. I tried using hands and thought it was impossible, I almost gave up, then I fit the piece back into the machine at the original location, push the steam wand right through it while the piece is in place, using the housing to hold it. That was a breeze. Wanted to share this. 😅
Just completed the mod following your tutorial, excellent level of detail. Thank you Getting the nut onto the new wand was a nightmare. A tip I found in comments somewhere is to heat the plastic nut in hot water to soften it and then it will push on much easier. Worked a treat for me
Can't reiterate the detail put into the video hard enough Tips like - using the pliers to snap back on the locking clip, using gloves to push the plastic piece along the pipe and organosing your screws... game changer Thanks for this! 3 years and still useful. Currently halfway through the process on a 785
I didn't want to upgrade my De'Longhi Dedica Style EC685.M with a different steam wand, but just replace the old steam wand with a broken plastic end by the identical new replacement steam wand. So the explanations I needed were mostly the same as shown here. Thanks a lot for this video! It is well done, very elaborate and carefully explains all necessary steps in detail.
@@itendswithus345Use pry tool between chassis and the knob. If possible, apply equal pressure from opposite sides of the knob. Do it before taking the top cover off. There is spring on the knob, make sure it doesn't get undone and lost.
this video finally worked out for me! thank you so much!! For everyone who is afraid of doing this upgrade: I am someone with ZERO craftmanship, but I thought to myself „there‘s nothing I can really damage or destroy on this machine.“ So why not give it a try and see how it works out? This video is explained so well that there is no chance of doing something wrong. The hardest part for me was getting the plastic thing on to the new wand. Using gloves + dish soap and somehow it worked
The best tutorial out there. I was hesitant after watching the other videos out there, but this one is so detailed and shows every single step. Thanks a lot, it went smoothly :)
Thanks for the video! 2 hours and the new steam wand is installed) I have two observations though, which I did not expect from such modification. At first, the steam operation is veeery loud now, but I might be caused by the wrong technique. And secondly, it seems like the machine is now running hotter than before. Have you observed any of these by yourself?
@@denisbelyakov3438 Hey there Денис, well the steam wand is now longer, so you have to be careful that it doesn't get too close to the metal. Whether it runs hotter, I cannot tell. It does not seem that way to me. Anyway, nothing about the heating element has changed. But, be careful because the steam wand WILL get very hot now! Thanks for watching!
I just did this today. Took me 2.5hrs where Tom said he took 1.5hrs so I was pretty happy. It was fiddly but the video had all the steps to make me feel comfortable. There was a couple of extra screws not mentioned on the bottom of my model near the water tank. Might be a newer model. Take photos and try and put the right length screws back where they belong. I’m very excited now to learn how to use this steam wand properly.
Just did this, and managed to replace the Y-shaped connector at the same time as it was leaking. All working perfectly now. Thanks for such clear instructions!
Tom.... i want you to know that 2 years on, your video here on TH-cam on how to upgrade the steam wand to a Rancilio type is still the BEST guide! It is detailed & very step by step and it DARN WORKS!I I am sure i am speaking on behalf of all 656 commenters here too,... we would not have been able to systematically do this without u and your fantastic video! You save us a tonnnnne of elbow grease, numbed fingers and also broken Delonghi clips with this amazing video of yours. Today, because of your video, I got mine done in all less than 1 hour. Note: Tough the white-plastic-elbow holder would never fit reardless whatever glove i wear. Maybe my fingers are not as strong as yours, for sure.... what i had to do: I had to drill it bigger by a little bit (and use some plumber's teflon tape to snug it before clipping in that C clip..... I can only think of this after i watch you put in so much effort during that part of the video. A great heads up there, Tom! Really! Again Tom, THANK YOU VERY MUCH. Love from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Andrew Boey
Just another comment to say I completed the upgrade following along with this video. Like everyone is saying this is a high quality instructional video clearly showing each step with a concise explanation. If you follow this video you can't go wrong.
Fitting that plastic piece onto the Rancillo was insane and took some patience! What did the trick was using oil on the tight curves to get the piece over them. Thanks for your great video. I watched a lot of tutorials and thought "No way!" but yours was so detailed and easy to follow that I now own a Delonghi with a Rancillio wand.
Great to hear, Mocky! I found that pushing the plastic nut worked better than twisting. I also read that warming it up, or lubing helps. Thanks for your feedback, and happy coffee ☕️ drinking!
Just upgraded steam wand on my dedica following your video. Upgrade is not easy, but the result is more than worth the effort. Getting the plastic piece on rancilio steam wand was the most consuming part. I want to point out that the wand is sturdier than it looks, so you can use quite a bit of force without breaking it. At the end, before placing the metal clamp back on, I used wire cutters to create a scratch-ring so that the metal clamp would lock in the place and not slide.
What a video 🙌 thank you for the meticulous detail included - didn’t get lost once. The tip on the gloves for the wand nut was much appreciated - Marigolds did the trick 😅 thanks again!
Just followed and completed!Always wanted to install this mod, but back when I was looking at tutorials couple of years ago, most were either incomplete/non English/or didnt fill me with any confidence... I stumbled upon this video at random as I'm getting back into espresso and decided to buy and Install the rancilio! Very informative and helpful. So one problem I came across which didnt seem an issue for anyone else was getting the plastic tubing off the nozzles (after removing the clip). To my horror I actually ripped the tubing connecting the steamwand to the cassette (luckily there was still enough tube to use once cutting off the ripped part..). So I suppose very patient with this unlike me.. Also, all of the ground clips were really connected on. Like they had been pinched down... so all were a bit trickier to get off than it was on your machine. For getting the plastic bit onto the rancilio... I pushed it from behind with some thinker pliers and it went on relatively OK... took me maybe 45 seconds. Could risk damaging I suppose (again my lack of patience), but worked OK for me. Thanks Tom!
Thank you. I've had this video favorited for a year now, at least, getting dedica, finally deciding to buy the replacement wand. Finally did it today. Your instructions were a huge help. Have to sa i strugled the most with something you made seem effortless. The little circular pin holding the plastic nut in place. Almost gave up and broke the thing, but i managed to get it in the end. The nut went on the replacent wand with far less problems. Everything clicled the first time and it works great. Thanks again
The instructions are spot on. I did notice on the rancilio wand is more shallow (the portion inside of the machine) than the pannarello wand. Did anybody notice that? The hose seems loosen up if you move the wand a lot. Just wanted to share.
Worked 100% with the wand from Amazon. The hardest part was forcing the white plastic piece over the bends. I've used some soap for lubrication, working gloves for grip, but it was still crazy hard.
Thanks, this was very helpful but some tips for people with tools: Use the torx bit. Use lube on the Rancilio wand, and vice grips to hold the nut (gently-ish). When taking the screws out of the brew group, note which ones are short and which are long - it's not intuitive. Taking off the hose might be a real bear. I used heat and a lot of force and didn't end up ripping it, but it seemed close.
I would like to thank you for this tutorial and i want to share my experience. After replacing the steam wand i would get an error, all 3 lights would flash after steaming for a bit or after preinfusion. So if you have this issue the solution is simple: let the machine warm up, turn on the steam function and let it purge the air out. It can take a minute or so, but after this all of the air bubbles should be bled out of the system.
Thanks to your detailed 'entertainment' video @Tom's Coffee Corner, I had no trouble doing this upgrade! It seems on the newer models there are no ground wires to deal with. I noticed that some of the screws in the same location were differing lengths, not sure if this is crucial but I kept track of them anyway. The hose clamps were different from yours, compression type and they came off fairly easily; replaced them with automotive vacuum hose clamps. All in all, a good retro-fit, thanks again!
Hey Vic, thanks very much for your feedback! Good to know that the automotive hose clamps can be used on the newer model. Hope you enjoy your modification. 🙋♂️
Did this mod at the same time as replacing the OVP valve wonderful upgrade and saved me 300/400 pounds. The biggest problem seems to be getting the old white seating nut off, followed closely by getting it on the Rancillio wand, washing up liquid and rubber glove help loads. BE CAREFUL NOT TO HOLD THE NEW WAND IN SUCH A POSITION IT BENDS IT WHILE APPLYING PRESSURE ON THE WHITE NUT. Thanks again TOM
I just did this mod on my EC 865 and the video was very good as a starting point. There are a few things I would add after going through it. #1 the Rancillo wand has a shorter top side so clamping it after putting the tube on there is not much space so not sure if there is a longer Rancillo wand one could buy or just slide the one up higher? #2 Tom is correct the 865 has the one time use clamps so you have to use a flat head screw driver to pry them off. I went and bought a couple of the clamps shown in Tom's video but like I said attaching it to the wand there is not much room. So will see how it holds. #3 Alot of the ground wires now are not attached to the chassis so don't have to worry about that. #4 Just make sure you pay attention on the bottom when you take off the rubber hose that goes to the water tank. there are a couple of filters and a rubber attachment. I didn't pay attention and it took me a few times of taking the bottom off and changing how the filters and rubber attachment go on. Take a picture as Tom says!! Thanks!!!
Thanks for those good insights on the EC685, James Bond! Now, off to your next mission! ;) Just kidding, I am sure these tips will be helpful...in fact, someone posted right after you did, asking how to get the newer type clamps off. Hope you enjoy your new steam wand! Tom
Hi Tom! together with my dad with the help of your movie we did it. I thought he was going to kill me! 🤣🤣 it took 3 hours .. but it worked. Greetings from Poland!
Hello Magda! Thanks for your feedback! This upgrade is a bit challenging, that's right. Glad you managed with the help of your dad, and I hope you enjoy making some cappuccinos with your upgrade! ☕️🤗
Thanks for that great video. Took me over 2 hours but only because I had great difficulty with the plastic nut over the new Wand. My advice use pliers carefully on the nut plus a bit washing up liquid then it’s fairly straightforward. You need to note the differing screw lengths for the inside of the cassette removal as said by a few. Also the Earth connection deep in the machine is a bit of a sod else all good. Thanks again. 👍
That wire can be disconnected at more accessible location. Just follow where it goes and you'll see that it attaches on another wire. Disconnect it right there. Easy.
Fantastic tutorial!! What a public service. But I gotta say that I'd expected it to be a much simpler procedure, and I'm not sure if I'll do it as my home craftsmanship skills are only good enough to change a light bulb 😅
Yes, the machine is super tight. So it's not so easy to work on. On the other hand, that's also the reason they could make this so slim and appealing. Cheers!
Hi Tom! I just finished the rancilio mod using your great video!! Thanks!! The only thing I did differently is that I popped the power button off the body and the machine slided out easily! Yours is the best video out there!
Hello Tom, my personal opinion you are the best. I like the way you showing technic and motivate us like hobby barista. Thanks for all you teach’d. 😉🙏🏻
Amazing guide! Just finished fitting mine, thought I'd add another tip for fitting the nut onto the rancilio (which is not as good as the others for a cleaner approach), I ended up getting a pair of pliers after letting it settle in warm water then it made it easier for me as you can just keep turning the wand around like a hand crank whilst having a good grip on the nut with the pliers. I didn't have a pair of gloves knocking around to help with a grip and I wanted to get it done haha. I actually found the clamp to be the more troublesome than the nut personally because my needle nose pliers was slightly too big to be able to pull it off the original steam wand properly, so because of the way I managed to remove it, I struggled to add it onto the new one because the wand is slightly thicker than the original wand. The clamp even came off after fully putting the machine back together but no big deal as the new wand moves around just fine without!
Thanks a lot Tom for this tutorial. Went smooth and without any problem. And I have to admit: WOW! The difference between stock Dedica 680 wand and Silvia wand is so huge, I couldn't even imagine how much it'll improve my latte art. Thanks a lot again and keep up good work! You're the best, cheers!
I'm just drinking my first cappuccino right after the upgrade, and oh my god, the difference is visible. Thank you, Tom, for keeping me entertained on this gloomy Saturday morning, you are an absolute legend. Mine was the same series as yours, as luckily, I still had the double wire spring hoses and didn't have to change anything inside of the machine. One thing maybe to keep in mind that sometimes you need quite a bit of extra force to remove the ground vires, especially in the bottom, which is in a bit of a hidden place, so it's not always that easy as in the video, but it shouldn't keep anybody back from doing the upgrade :))
Thanks for the feedback, and sharing your story! Yes, the ground wires can be a little tricky to dislodge. But just know this: they have little tabs on them that hook into their counterpart. If you pull back on those tabs while pulling on the wire, they come off much easier. Cheers!
Tom, thank you so much for this video! I work in IT but even I was scared to do this. I did end up messing up the power button a little bit everything else works like a charm! The steamer is great! I tried the hot water trick to get the rubber nut on the new steamer and that worked great.
I installed the rancilio wand and this video was very very useful. Didn't have to take photos because of it. I will address some things: - at 10:48 Tom puts the clip below the white nut. This isn't correct, the clips goes above the nut. It needs to be between the nut and the bump. Don't worry about the nut sliding off, the socket and the frame will keep it in place. The clip has a sliding spot inside the machine which helps with the direction movement of the wand. If you put the clip below the wand will spring back and not stay in place. - To slide the nut into the new wand (it's incredibly tight) you can use some olive oil. Just be sure to wash it with soap and rinse it well. - When I tested the rancilio wand the first time it started leaking at the nozzle junction. I got mine on amazon warehouse, but it looked brand new. So I don't think it's a defect. Thing of it as a plumbing connection. I "ruined" the thread a bit with a knife and put some teflon on it. You can tighten the nut using a size 9 wrench. After doing this the wand didn't leak anymore and was good to go. Switching the wand is a bit fiddly, but not too complicated. This video takes you 90% of the way. I hope people see my comment if they are having trouble in the same way I did. Thank you for this guide.
This guide worked very well for me, only trouble I've had is that the wand is very loose and doesn't stay where positioned, it's manageable but I'm not sure why/how it happened.
Thank you so much for your video and detailed guideline, my machine works very well now. I used pliers to remove the white plastic stuff on the new steam wand. It caused a lot of scratches, but it is much more effective than only by hand, and saves a lot of time. I do not mind the scratches, cause you will not see it when you complete reassembly.
thanks Tom for your youtube video... You inspired me to mod my ec680.... man it was a challenge, and the white nut was probably the hardest part of the whole process... But now it is done... I have been making very nice milk and the air entrained is so much better than stock. Again thankyou, and happy to see soo much passion in your videos from expressing a shot to making great milk
All works as described but I would recommend putting the white thingy in hot water before trying to put it on the new steam wand. I was struggling with this one quite a bit.
Hello Tom, By your video i replace'd the steam wand (very helpfull video, with all the details need), and now i learn the technic, to make silky, creamy milk foam. Thanks again. You are the best. 😜👍🏻
I saved this one as watch later about the time it came out and today, finally.. finally managed to install the wand 😅 damn this was tiresome but well worth the results! Thanks so much for the guide. 🙌
Hi Tom, thank you very much for this video.... really helpful. I followed this closely and was able to successfully install the Rancilio wand quickly... there were only a few minor differences in my unit with clamps, etc but nothing a quick trip to the hardware store couldn't solve. Thanks again for taking the time to post a comprehensive guide!
@@TomsCoffeeCorner Yes, I just used 3/8 inch easy spring hose clamps (for water lines) from the local home improvement store. They were an easy fix after removing the OEM clamp. Andy
Thank you for the great video, very detailed and made the install easy. I was one of the lucky ones with the newer DeLonghi with the braided tube and one time use clips. I looked through the comments trying to find the correct clip and ended up buying a few off Amazon. The spring clips I wasn't sold on as they just didn't have the strength I hoped (there are probably better ones if i ordered more) I also ordered a few types of the Single Ear Hose Clamps. One kit had 8.8 - 10.5 mm clips which I tried and they fell off during install so I found a second set of clips with 7.8 - 9.5mm clips (these are a match to what originally was on it, they had 95 stamped on the side). In addition to the clips I bought Knipex ear clamp pliers (there are cheaper options but I liked the front and side jaws, side jaws came in helpful for the clamp attached to the wand). Make sure to clamp the hose to the wand before putting the case back in, even with the side jaws I didn't find enough room. The spring clips would be easier to use but if the hose comes off frequently the clamping power of the single use clips would be the better option imo. Other things to note: dont worry about the button working until the bottom is screwed on (i had a nervous moment when the button was stuck, attached the bottom with all screws and everything was back to normal) getting the tube on the wand, watch the short video by Tom, in this video the white plastic piece is pushed right up to the steam wand top bubble (not sure what to call it), there needs to be some room on both sides of the bubble/hump on the wand so the tube can go over it. bottom star screws I found a 5/32 flat head screw driver works perfect Hopefully this helps someone, it was a fun upgrade! @@selmansenkalp lol of course it did, so much for my advice 🤣 Were you able to get it working? If the machine is on its side button facing down (against the table) is how I was able to get the cartridge on the easiest. The cartridge will have some play but with a little wiggling you hopefully will find the sweet spot then, at least for me, when you flip it to put the bottom on the button goes out of sync until the plate is screwed on.
Thanks for the video! I don’t know if we have different rancilio wands or something because it took me 3 hours 😂 Two things that I struggled with and might help someone: 1. Putting back the safety clip into the new rancilio wand was such a hassle, it wouldn’t stay put for me to clamp it with the pliers so it was taking a good 30 minutes until I had an idea: twist a rubber band to hold the clip in place, then clip it and remove the rubber band. 2. Removing the tube from the old wand was “easy” (still took more than in the video! I have an EC785, did they make everything tighter in this one? 😂) - the issue was putting it back on! I tried doing it after inserting the cassette as you recommended but I soon realized it was better to do it outside, because again the tube was super tight on the new rancilio Wand! I tried for like 20 minutes to get it over the little bump as you suggest in your other video so I could clamp it there, but no luck. I decided to put it in hot water to soften it and that seems to have done the trick!!! It’s not an impossible task at all, but it you’re a small woman who is not very strong in the arms you might want to ask a man for help with a few of the steps (your hands will thank you 😂). I tried using it once and it was making a LOT of weird noise - but I think I wasn’t using it properly tbh, being used to the dedica one I just submerged the tip all the way and didn’t give it much air, but by the end I realised if I just hovered the tip over the milk and gave it more air it would stop doing that horrible noise! Really looking forward to practicing more!
A small tip… When placing the annoying plastic peace to the new wand, just pour hot water on it and it will slide much more easily . No gloves needed 😊
Thanks Tom for the thorough instruction. After replacement I found that I can’t properly steam the milk, it get’s overheated or not silky at all if I’m steaming for a less time 😅 I tried many times…
Ok... I usually don't comment on youtube videos but now I have to. I have a EC685M and I did manage to do this upgrade... but I went through hell and back for it ;-) I already had a situation at the step where you have to loosen the hose and the white plastic nut part from the original steam wand (managed it with the help of some tools) but then MY GOD getting the plastic nut part onto the new steam wand seemed outright impossible! Having read through the comments before I was assertive for some hard stuff but I didn't expect that I had to figuratively break the laws of physics!! :D BUT I assure everyone who wants to do this upgrade on a EC585M - you can do it!! Don't give up. Use oil/lube. Try the hot water/hairdryer tricks on the plastic nut. The pushing on and edgy surface does help a lot (be sure to protect everything you cherish) - also some precise hits on the the plastic part helped me go around the corners of the wand. Also it helps to think of someone you don't like, while doing this ;-) You can do it!! Thank you Tom for the great instructions! Also, like some others, the new wand seems to be a little too loose after installing... when I pull it towards me and let it go (to steam milk), it just turns right back to its comfy position... do you have a trick for that, that it stays in position?
Thank you for sharing your experience, Lisa! My wand also wanders to be honest...I think the original wand had just the right circumference for friction. The new wand is a little different. Cheers!
In the process of replacing the steam wand and the video is working wonders! The only problem is that on my newer version, the hose is surrounded in a braided cord cover and clips that are much more difficult to remove and impossible to reuse. So we'll have to go out and find replacements for those two clips before we can complete the process, but hopeful so far!
It was seemingly the same for my EC260BK model. The clamps you're talking about are crimped pex style clamp - 3/8" I believe. You'll have to cut them off. You can get clamps in the style of the video at any auto parts store and most hardware stores. Cheaper solution over buying the pex crimp tool and clamps. Hope this helps for anyone running into this situation.
Hi, Tom. Great tutorial. I have a Smeg ECF01 machine. It looks very similar to your machine. Your video is so much more detailed and easier to follow than others out there. I'll let you know how I get on when I do the mod.
Hello Peter, thanks for the feedback! 🙋♂️I have seen a video of the Smeg, and the internals look just the same as the Dedica. So I imagine the process will be very much the same. In fact, other than the more bulbous shape of the housing, the machines look very similar optically as well. 👍🏻 How are you liking that machine by the way?
@@TomsCoffeeCorner I've just done the upgrade. It was a challenge! But your video helped me through. Thanks again. 😀 I now get a great foam on cappuccinos. 😀👍
Been watching this vid for awhile now and today, it's time for me to upgrade the steam wand to the rancilio. Totally worth the upgrade and it does look good too. Thank you Tom for sharing this video 🙌🏽
6:45 removing the ground wire. as others have already pointed out, they changed this part. I didn't figure out how to remove it safely since I don't know if it requires any spare parts from an electrician...will try to find out. other than that, great video, thank you.
Great tutorial. Easy to follow until it gets to the spring clamps on the steam hose - they're apparently no longer using spring clamps, but PEX-type clamps that are very difficult to remove and not reusable. I'll have to get some hose clamps or spring clamps at the hardware store before I try again.
Just did the mod. Thanks for the video! It's much better and more complete than the ones available. Took me an hour and a half and a lot of pain in my fingers. A tip for sliding the plastic thing on the wand is to put towel on the table, hold the wand and push the plastic against the table. That made it much much easier! Any mod to reduce the pressure a bit? Thanks!
Nice work, Mincho! Thanks for giving your feedback, I am sure it will help others too. I have not seen a pressure reduction mod yet, but maybe could be a topic for a future video... Cheers, T
that‘s where I had to give up last afternoon… I just couldn‘t get the plastic thing on the wand. Going to try it with the gloves today! Another issue I have is when I want to put the bottom back on it seems that something in the bottom centre is pushing so I can‘t close it without the on/off button beeing out of place… Any suggestions where I messed up? And thanks for the great video!
@@mrgibson Hey Mr. Gibson, yes gloves will help. What worked for me was pushing, not twisting. You need a lot of force. As for the bottom, there may be the on/off button in the way...just try to look with a flash light, and take your time. ;)
I had missed socketing the little yellow chip with the two holes during reassembly and I gave up on inserting the little metal bracket below the white plastic turning head, but everyting else worked flawlessly as descrbed.
I happened to bought a 685M model that has slightly different design. The tube that connects the the steam wand uses two single-ear hose clamps ( took me some time to search the name). I had to purchase a kit with clamps for 9mm tubes as they are one time use only. I had to destroy the original hose clamps and re-install new ones. Also, I bought a steamwand from Amazon that has slightly sharp curve that the joint ball was unable to pass through. I ordered another one from another vendor and it was very smooth to put on.
Opened! The location of the latch area was different. 4:21 Actually it is the same model, but maybe the technique has changed. I got a little nervous and closed it back. The new steam will wait for me until I meet a friend who is a coffee master. Thank you for all details!!
The hardest part would be installing the white plastic nut into new wand, but here are some tips to make it easy: 1. Place the new wand in your freezer. Metal shrinks when it's cold. 2. Submerge the plastic nut in hot water to soften it. 3. Apply oil/soap water when installing. 4. Use gloves for better grip. Took me only a minute to do this part 👌
Hey Tom, Cheers for the thoughtful and detailed guide. I'll be sure to follow this guide when it comes to modifying my dedica :) Keep up the excellent work!

Omg this helped so much!! Thought Tom had some hidden dad strength or something that I needed to unlock
I was sceptical. Thought it might break the housing. Worked great, thanks:)
All Delonghi Dedica users say THANK YOU SO MUCH! Very helpful and detailed video.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for your kind feedback!
Just completed the mod following your tutorial, excellent level of detail. Thank you
Getting the nut onto the new wand was a nightmare.
A tip I found in comments somewhere is to heat the plastic nut in hot water to soften it and then it will push on much easier. Worked a treat for me
Great to hear! Thanks for writing that tip, as well. I had to put on gloves to get a better grip for sliding the nut. Have fun with the mod! Tom
I was having trouble with the nut and this did the trick, thank you
worked for me as well. thanks
Damn i wish I would've seen this before I did mine.
Can't reiterate the detail put into the video hard enough
Tips like - using the pliers to snap back on the locking clip, using gloves to push the plastic piece along the pipe and organosing your screws... game changer
Thanks for this!
Hi, I’m in the midst of replacing the wand for the same model but how do I get the knob out?
Not upgrading steam wand when you already got the machine apart is such a wasted opportunity.
Thanks for your feedback Mr. Gibson, and good job on completing the modification! 🤗
The best tutorial out there. I was hesitant after watching the other videos out there, but this one is so detailed and shows every single step. Thanks a lot, it went smoothly :)
Awesome, heladar! Comments like this make me happy I documented all the steps. Happy coffee drinking!
@@TomsCoffeeCorner same for you Tom and thank you again, I am enjoying a fabulous latte right now thanks to the upgrade :) it's definitely worth it!
Thanks for the video! 2 hours and the new steam wand is installed)
I have two observations though, which I did not expect from such modification. At first, the steam operation is veeery loud now, but I might be caused by the wrong technique. And secondly, it seems like the machine is now running hotter than before. Have you observed any of these by yourself?
@@denisbelyakov3438 what do you mean by hotter? The end itself is hotter cause it's fully metal If you mean that :D
Awesome job, Ben! Thanks for the feedback, and happy coffee drinking!
Just did this, and managed to replace the Y-shaped connector at the same time as it was leaking. All working perfectly now. Thanks for such clear instructions!
Excellent! Great job fixing your machine!
Tom.... i want you to know that 2 years on, your video here on TH-cam on how to upgrade the steam wand to a Rancilio type is still the BEST guide! Andrew Boey
@@andrewboey4838 thank you so much for your kind words, Andrew!
Just another comment to say I completed the upgrade following along with this video.
Like everyone is saying this is a high quality instructional video clearly showing each step with a concise explanation.
If you follow this video you can't go wrong.
Thank you for your feedback. I am really glad to hear that the video helped. Cheers! Tom
Thanks for posting your experience!
I've just replaced a faulty valve and this video was invaluable, Thank you!
What a video 🙌 thank you for the meticulous detail included - didn’t get lost once. The tip on the gloves for the wand nut was much appreciated - Marigolds did the trick 😅 thanks again!
Excellent tutorial. The plastic nut was extremely difficult to install on the new wand. Had to use pliers and dishwashing soap to get it through.
Thanks Tom!
Hi there! Thanks so much for sharing your experience. I am sure it will be helpful for some doing this mod. Cheers! Tom
You are a legend! i watched your videos on changing the OPV, pump and this one and managed to change all of those in a few hours. Thank you!!!
Awesome, glad to hear!
This video provided an excellent step-by-step guide to what could have otherwise been a difficult upgrade. Thank you
Great to hear! Have fun with your new steam wand!
Thank you for this, the new steam wand is a total game changer.
I just followed your instructions on a EC685, and it works perfectly.
Thank you very much ! 😊👍
Awesome! 👏 😎 Hope you have fun with it!
Wow that is not at all how I thought that was going to go. That was a lot of work to swap that out. You are way braver than myself.
perfect tutorial. followed you step by step and never felt insecure. THANK YOU!
Glad it helped! Thanks for the feedback, Andreas! Now on to some milk frothing. 🥛
I followed all your steps and made it
You’re a real hero thanks ❤
Thanks, this was very helpful but some tips for people with tools:
Use the torx bit.
Do you know of anywhere where the screws are listed where they go? I had to take mine out all the way and don't know of some of them where they go
It’s a really good guidelines video. Instead of buying a professional espresso machine, we can upgrade a cheaper one to pro level by ourself!
Glad it was helpful! Enjoy practicing latte art!
How did you Manage to get the plastic nut off the original steaming Wand? I'm completely stuck here. Seems impossible to get off
Did this mod at the same time as replacing the OVP valve wonderful upgrade and saved me 300/400 pounds.
Awesome, Dude! Thanks for the feedback, and tips!
How did you get the nut off?? I'm stuck here and sever finger pain 😂😂😂 The tube was also really difficult to get off.
Now, off to your next mission! ;)
Just kidding, I am sure these tips will be helpful...in fact, someone posted right after you did, asking how to get the newer type clamps off.
Easy.
Thank you. According to your video, I have replaced the new steam wand successfully.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Cheers!
I think I wouldn't be able to upgrade mine without this amazingly explained video. Thank you very much for your help!
Thank you for a fantastic video, I´m changing my steam wand tomorrow and feeling confident after watching your video (multiple times)! Thanks!
Best of luck! And thanks for the feedback!
Hi Tom! I just finished the rancilio mod using your great video!! Thanks!! The only thing I did differently is that I popped the power button off the body and the machine slided out easily! Yours is the best video out there!
Awesome, Dimitris! Glad to hear it. Cheers, Tom

Tom

Hello Tom, my personal opinion you are the best. I like the way you showing technic and motivate us like hobby barista. Thanks for all you teach’d. 😉🙏🏻
You betcha! Thanks for watching, and for your feedback!
Good idea with the pliers! Have fun!
Awesome! Have fun practicing your latte art!
Cheers!
Thanks Tom! I used you video just now to mod my Dedica. Man that white nut was tough! That was probably the hardest part for me.
I know, a lot of people have issues with that nut..
Tom, thank you so much for this video! I work in IT but even I was scared to do this. I did end up messing up the power button a little bit everything else works like a charm! The steamer is great!
I tried the hot water trick to get the rubber nut on the new steamer and that worked great.
Thanks for the feedback, and enjoy! Tom
I installed the rancilio wand and this video was very very useful. Didn't have to take photos because of it.
I will address some things:
- at 10:48 Tom puts the clip below the white nut.
Awesome, thanks for your feedback! Tom
I used this video to upgrade the steam wand on my DeLonghi. 10/10!!!

You're welcome, Andrew! Glad it worked out for you! Did you use automotive hose clamps, or what did you find? Cheers, Tom
@@TomsCoffeeCorner Yes, I just used 3/8 inch easy spring hose clamps (for water lines) from the local home improvement store. They were an easy fix after removing the OEM clamp. Andy
@@andrewpiepel8548 Very nice, Andy! Would you mind providing a link to them? That would certainly be helpful to many others, I'm sure. 😉
Hey Tom, thanks for the video! Super through and helpful! Mission accomplished this evening !
Nice work! I am happy to hear it! 😉
Other things to note: dont worry about the button working until the bottom is screwed on (i had a nervous moment when the button was stuck, attached the bottom with all screws and everything was back to normal)
getting the tube on the wand, watch the short video by Tom, in this video the white plastic piece is pushed right up to the steam wand top bubble (not sure what to call it), there needs to be some room on both sides of the bubble/hump on the wand so the tube can go over it.
bottom star screws I found a 5/32 flat head screw driver works perfect
Hopefully this helps someone, it was a fun upgrade!

My button got stuck even after I put on the bottom lol.
@@mgrenzic I disassembled the bottom and just left the button in On state, then screwed everything in. That’s how I use it anyway lol.
Thanks for the video! I don’t know if we have different rancilio wands or something because it took me 3 hours 😂
Two things that I struggled with and might help someone:
A small tip…
When placing the annoying plastic peace to the new wand, just pour hot water on it and it will slide much more easily . No gloves needed 😊
Awesome, I will have to try that next time. Thanks!
Oh my god trying that this very moment. I've been struggling even with gloves to get it around the bend. Fingers crossed!
Thanks Tom for the thorough instruction. After replacement I found that I can’t properly steam the milk, it get’s overheated or not silky at all if I’m steaming for a less time 😅 I tried many times…
This is awesome! Thank you so much for the well-instructed video.
Ok... I usually don't comment on youtube videos but now I have to. I have a EC685M and I did manage to do this upgrade... but I went through hell and back for it ;-)
I already had a situation at the step where you have to loosen the hose and the white plastic nut part from the original steam wand (managed it with the help of some tools) but then MY GOD getting the plastic nut part onto the new steam wand seemed outright impossible!
Cheers!
This was brilliant. Thank you. Worked a treat.
Glad it helped!
I have heard of various techniques for that braided hose clamp. Please read through the comments for some solutions. Best! Tom
I don’t have this machine, but I do really love these kind of DIY’s video (especially from a new creator).
Have my like!

How are you liking that machine by the way?
@@TomsCoffeeCorner I've just done the upgrade. It was a challenge! But your video helped me through. Thanks again. 😀 I now get a great foam on cappuccinos. 😀👍
@@peterpelosi4396 Awesome, Peter! So that means that this mod works for the Smeg too? Good news. 👍
Been watching this vid for awhile now and today, it's time for me to upgrade the steam wand to the rancilio. Totally worth the upgrade and it does look good too. Thank you Tom for sharing this video 🙌🏽
You betcha! Have fun doing the mod! Tom
I did the upgrade. It's awesome now! Thank you!
Glad you like it!
Thank you very much for this video, Tom! I changed my steam wind without any problem.
Awesome, happy to hear it, Maxim!
Thanks Tom, just did it following your video and I’m loving it!
Glad you enjoy it! Now it's time to practice latte art!
6:45 removing the ground wire.
as others have already pointed out, they changed this part. I didn't figure out how to remove it safely since I don't know if it requires any spare parts from an electrician...will try to find out.
other than that, great video, thank you.
There is a tiny button (sort of) at the base of the connector. Press it carefully with a tip of a small screwdriver and connector will come off easily
@@MrMechislavamazing. worked just fine. thank you
Great tutorial. Easy to follow until it gets to the spring clamps on the steam hose - they're apparently no longer using spring clamps, but PEX-type clamps that are very difficult to remove and not reusable. I'll have to get some hose clamps or spring clamps at the hardware store before I try again.
Thanks for the video Tom, I just done the upgrade today and it went perfectly.
Very good, MM... glad to hear it!
Brilliant, got this done in about an hour zero hassle. Wondering if there’s a well priced grinder you recommend for this machine? Manual or auto
Here's a list of grinders: kit.co/tomscoffeecorner/grinder-suggestions
Thanks to you.. now I can do latte art better than ever and most important save up my money from buying another machine 😅
That's great! Enjoy experimenting with your latte art!
Cheers,
T
that‘s where I had to give up last afternoon… I just couldn‘t get the plastic thing on the wand. Going to try it with the gloves today!
Another issue I have is when I want to put the bottom back on it seems that something in the bottom centre is pushing so I can‘t close it without the on/off button beeing out of place…
Any suggestions where I messed up?
And thanks for the great video!
@@mrgibson I removed the on button and put it back afterwards. For the plastic thing try pushing against a towel on a table it was much much easier
@@kroasana I‘ll try it once I get back from work, thank you! :-)
@@mrgibson Hey Mr. Gibson, yes gloves will help. What worked for me was pushing, not twisting. You need a lot of force. As for the bottom, there may be the on/off button in the way...just try to look with a flash light, and take your time. ;)
This worked so well for my machine! Thank you 🙏🏻
Great to hear!
Thanks Tom, I've done the same upgrade, thanks to your video.. big thumb up for U.. very useful tutorial..
Aweseom, Quentin! I am so happy to hear it. Cheers! ☕️
Thanks for those insights! Would you mind posting the link to those clamps for others watching? Cheers!
I have that same issue with the clamps, could you share the link of the ones you used? I've tried a couple unsuccessfully
Such a detailed well put together video, thank you for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it! Have fun!
I really appreciate the video! Even tho I couldn't remove the upper part of the machine and gave up 3:20. But thats fine, I’ll try later again
Opened! The location of the latch area was different. 4:21 Actually it is the same model, but maybe the technique has changed. I got a little nervous and closed it back. The new steam will wait for me until I meet a friend who is a coffee master. Thank you for all details!!
The hardest part would be installing the white plastic nut into new wand, but here are some tips to make it easy:
1. Place the new wand in your freezer. Metal shrinks when it's cold.
2. Submerge the plastic nut in hot water to soften it.
3. Apply oil/soap water when installing.
4. Use gloves for better grip.
Took me only a minute to do this part 👌
Thanks so much for those tips! Tom
Ok, this tutorial is really good. The only downside is that now I have to buy the wand once I watched it.
Haha, thanks Ivan. The wand is pretty reasonably priced, at least. ;) Cheers and have fun DIYing! ☕️
Hey Tom,
Cheers for the thoughtful and detailed guide. I'll be sure to follow this guide when it comes to modifying my dedica :)
Keep up the excellent work!
Hey there Luke! Thanks very much for the kudos. Wishing you a nice DIY project, when you get your new steam wand.
Happy coffee drinking! ☕️
