  • In this November 1985 lecture demonstration in the USA, (following Sharon Lowen's Pade Vande Mangalacharan, Guruji's amazingly wonderful technique demo and Sharonns Arabhi Pallavi (see other youtube clips), Guruji performs the Kuru Yadunandana Ashtapadi without costume or makeup. I kept in my intro in English for a university audience for your amusement or edification, as the case may be.

I am so envious of people who know odissi dance. I want to learn this dance since I was small but nobody can teach me here in our place.

What an amazing performance! I know nothing about dance but even I can appreciate greatness when I see it. These days when I accompany my daughter to bharatnatyam class, I don't see a single boy. Soon Krishna and Shiva will be played by women and indian classical dance, within one generation, would have passed out of male hands completely. While I welcome the ascent of women, I feel it's up to women dance gurus to undo this great damage.

@@SharonLowen1 This is great to know. Did you mean in India or among the indian diaspora in the US? Perhaps you can post a link to some of their performances, if available.

Mam 🙏 A question for you. At what age were you learn odishi dance?

Great Question! I only started odishi dance when i was 23, after 17 years ballet and modern dance in the usa, a master's degree in dance from university of michigan and training in Manipuri in the usa and two years in india. I intended to take Guruji's workshop for academic understanding, but he said i learned faster than anyone he had ever taught so in less than 3 months he taught me mangalacharan, Batu and Saveri pallavi, insisted i make a costume and record music and his encouragement is why i have been able to continue my dedication to this great art
