- This rare recording was of the one performance of Guruji during my 1985-86 USA tour which he accompanied along with Pt Bhubaneswar Misra -violin, shri Rakhal Mohanty - Vocal, and Ratikant Mohapatra playing pakhawaj/mardala for this performance instead of manjiras. It was at the NYC Metropolitan Museum and was the last concert of the tour. I apologize that the ending is not there as the recording was transferred and digitized from VHS so long ago and is incomplete. If I can find the original I will add it if it is there.
About the composition. Ahe Nila Sahila - Oriya poetry of Salabega
The Muslim Bhakti poet here calls on Jagannath, the blue mountain/gem to banish his many problems. The poet tells Jagannath/Vishnu/Krishna that “you rescued the elephant king when he was caught by a crocodile and prayed to you, heard Draupadi’s heartfelt plea in the Kaurav’s court and gave unlimited cloth when they tried to shame her, emerged from the column to save little Prahlada as half-man, half lion Narasimha, I bow at your feet in prayer, a muslim outcaste, grant me a small space to pray to you outside your temple in Puri and dispel my sufferings as well.”
It has been an absolute honor to be trained in his style of Odissi for a good fifteen years of my life. What grace, what beauty. The pride of my state. I feel privileged to call myself an Odissi dancer.

Did anyone notice, Guruji performed Muslim Namaaz in the beginning? I feel it is the poem written by the Muslim devotee named Salabega. If anyone differ from my view, please comment.
You are right , it was actually written by poet salo beg...
The great Muslim devotee Salabega wrote this asking for a glimpse of Jagannath as he was not permitted inside the mandir.. There are Muslim devotees still who participate in Rath Yatra when Jagannath and siblings leave the temple for all to have Darshan. Google him to learn more

And secoundly i can Definitely say that people have Modified this item to an Extreme level.. Now days abhinayas are full of Unnecessary Ornamental movement and extra dance rhythm...i hv seen many performing this abhinaya item. .. Have seen dance in both guru deba prasad sir's style and guru kelu sir's style both are brilliantly choreographed.. But nowdays gurus are adding their own flavours which not at all able to deliver an earthy odian flavored abhinaya...look how guruji Established pandava's.. No one is teaching there students about how to establish a character even though there is a shortage of stage time.guruji took just few secounds to establish arjun, bhim and yudhisthir... I am a fan of odissi, cant say myself an odissi dancer by learning a few items of odissi.. But i am a strong viewer and observer and definitely have a right to judge as a viewer... So as a viewer and odia, i am missing these pure items, and request all gurus to to please maintain realism,earthy,traditional and an odian flavour.
I agree with you about his wonderful performance. This is a choreography that lends itself to individual interpretations in the sancharis and was differenct when done first by Kum Kum Mohanty and later by Sanjukta Panigraphi. each artist brings their own personality and interpretive abilities and I find that I enjoy more than one way but I am happy to share these videos of Kelubabu so that students/performers can be better aware of options.
This captivating performance is really close to my heart, voice being rendered by my Grandfather ( Shri Rakhal Chandra Mohanty)! My Gratitude to the Maestros, such a beautiful piece. Thanks for Sharing 🙏

Captivating performance by Guruji himself. Equally captivating are the playback team comprising of the greats- Pt Rakhal Mohanty - Odissi vocalist n Composer playing harmonium, Pt Bhubaneswar Mishra - music composer on violin, Sri Ratikant Mohapatra on mardala (Odissi dancer son of Guruji)🙏
I was so blessed to have them with me for 6 weeks and 22 performances and lec-dems in 1985-86. This was the last performance and I requested Guruji to dance as well.

Guruji did a shorter version of Ahe Nila for this performance and we ended by doing sharba mangalam together. He had kindly accompanied me for my 22 performance and lec-dem tour in the USA and I requested him to perform for this last program of the tour so his son played mardala so he could dance.
This is marvellous. What an expression and he is a ‘Thrupangi ‘ . Namaskarams to him and his art.

Great to see the Great Master of Odissi himself perform this masterpiece. I admire his fine body physique and fluid movements even at his age.
IMHO, fat and overweight dancers are stiff and clumsy; they're a pain to watch and do not do justice to the beauty of the Odissi dance form.
Absolutely true, Guruji played mardala throughout which was better for pectorals than going to the gym and he wasn’t a “sitting” teacher. He had perfect proportions and fluidity in his movement style which was not diminished by age. However he was stiffer as happens with age but never clumsy. Weight does not make a dancer lose abhinaya or necessarily become clumsy, but it is not as aesthetic
