It must have been a sight to behold to see a sprightly Willis steaming into Gavaskar while a packed Eden Gardens lay in-wait ! Calcutta's crowd was an enigma since on occasions, like here, they graciously applauded a visiting team's win while on others they turned violent. Thanks to Mr. Galagali for another trip down memory lane.

There is no enigma with the Eden crowd. They always applaud true sportsmanship, irrespective of the side, but are quick to turn irate when they feel some "shenanigans" are happening.

@@montecristo1769 Here in England the crowds are still very polite. They will applaud good play from the opposing team even if England are about to lose the match, or playing badly.

@@ajs41 I was at Lord's recently for the Ashes test and the crowd was quite partisan. You'll agree things used to be better in the past.

Thanks a lot Jai Sir. This is my first test match seen on TV. For many years I was looking for this match on Google and TH-cam. Only ended up in failure. You have made a great effort to give us a glimpse. We remember in this match Greig went on his knees with folded hands before the famous clamour of the Eden crowd.

This was Tony Greig’s test match. An iron willed 100 running high fever in tough conditions. Willis was sensational. We lost the test due to the Greig Tolchard partnership.

I was at Eden Gardens for this match on the first day. England clearly dominated the proceedings. Gavaskar never performed well at Eden in his career so it wasn't surprising that he failed on both innings in this particular match. The crowd's favourite was G R Vishwanath but he too didn't rise to the occasion as he had done against West Indies two years before. Chandra and Prasanna were fading as strike bowlers by this time. The most extraordinary sight was the excellent rapport Tony Greig had with the Eden crowd, so they weren't displeased when the better team won.

SMG scored centuries in both innings against WI @ Eden, 1978-79 series. 3rd time he had done that. However, just anecdotally he had a habit of going cheaply or going big. Not many scores in the middle.

But I think Gavaskar has one century at Eden against Kallicharan's West Indies

Brijesh Patel played very well in second innings . He made 56 and was last out on difficult track. Later he made 83 at Mumbai in the last test. Very good player but he lacked consistency in test level. Greatest player in National level. He played for Karnataka. He scored 12000 runs. But 921 in 21 test. He played his last test at Perth in 1977. He made 27. He was bowled by Gannon. Very sad. Big talent but bad luck Brijesh Patel . IPL chairman today

As far as I can recollect, the Essex and England's left arm seamer was accused of ball tampering i.e.applying vaseline to keep the shine on the ball. That accusation by the Indian captain Bedi led to his cancellation of contract with his county Northamptonshire in England.

President Fakhruddin died on the 1st day of the 5th test in Bombay. Live relay was cancelled as a result and there was no AIR commentary too. So we climbed up to the terrace of the building at New Marine Lines where we resided. 3/4th of the ground was visible and could make out Gavaskar and Surinder Amarnath (left hander) batting. Gavaskar scored the only century for India in the series that day. 108 if I remember correctly.

Bedi was all time one of the great leg spinners in world cricket. But Bedi was not an efficient captain like Pataudi.
