    Great to see footage of this series for the first time. First signs of decline in GRV, he peaked between 74-76, better fitness might have prolonged his career. Amarnath was a different player once he started wearing a helmet. Lever was faster here than in the subsequent 1981 series but frankly an inept batting display against late in- swing. And I agree with one of the other comments that it was the ball rather than Vaseline. If it was so easy to swing a ball with Vaseline, we would have seen a lot more great spells of swing bowling in India. Thanks Jai

    Fantastic. Great to see this as I have only ever been able to read about it. Amiss was my batting hero having played for my county Warwickshire for 27 seasons. Cannot believe how much Lever got the ball to swing.

    Sir, Thank you very much for uploading this particular match. This is the first complete test match in my memory and my first series as a follower. . I was eight years old then and remember all the scores in all matches even now. John Lever was and still is my hero and because of his 10 for 70, I was drawn to the art of medium fast bowling, more than anything in cricket. I was thrilled when John Lever returned to India in 1981. Thank you very much once again.

    i have the memories of this match, as I had watched it on TV live along with my freinds and family, Two notable of this match: Media headlines. India has Lever trouble'. Next ....... the Vaseline swing bowling by Lever. John Lever was accused of tempering with the seam using vaseline in first innings ( 7/46)

    Dear Sir, once upon a time, I made a request for the upload the video clip of India's historic winning over W. I. In the 3rd test of 1976 tour, at Port of Spain, in which sunny and vidhi, had made superb centuries and Brajesh Patel, Jimmy Amarnath and A. Gaikwad also contributed splendidly
    This is my humble request to you.

    Is this true Lever used Vaseline to swing the Ball ?

    • @sanjaysawant784

      Yes!
      Lever was accused of using Vaseline as one could notice a small tape was put above his eye rows where jelly like substance was hidden and being used on regular basis.

    Lever cheated right? And India tamely referred this to MCC. They promptly cleared him.

    Left me slightly teary eyed -as my parents would tell me I a 6 year old used to avidly follow Denis Amiss in this knock since he seemed to be batting on and on. Watching this video made some of that hazy memories come flooding back. Thank you for putting this video together and the Jamaican Farewell music put the perfect touch . Many thanks for this video ..

    Those days it was either the newspaper or magazines like Sunday or Illustrated weekly of India which enabled the readers to get a comprehensive accounts of the test matches. Of course radio commentary was always there. India's performance in the very first test was disappointing. England avenged its back to back humiliation (1971 and 1972-73) by demolishing India in 1974 and this series. In this series India won Bangalore test, thanks to Chandra and Viswanath. A 3-0 defeat was too bitter a pill to swallow. After this series India lost to a second rate Australian team (1977-78) and then to Pakistan badly. Bedi was an unsuccessful captain. It was only under Gavaskar India was able to salvage the situation. After this test Bedi accused Lever of using vaseline to keep the shine of the ball longer. It was never proved. India almost lapped up victory in the last test (Bombay). It ended in a draw.

    whom I later met in Calcutta where he came there to play-I think it was some Bengal cricket Centenary something?! in 1980!?
    2)What else!? .. Jab deep jale... aana.. "CHITCHOR"!
    Yes, I did meet Amol Palekar too when he came to Sunil's(Gvskr) (Nirlon)in 1978! Fantastic days!! Then... Bedi paaji called John Lever as John "Vaseline":Lever!( during the same series!?)❤️🏏
    Good to see your video ❤️🏏🌹

    The vaseline affair. Prodigious swing in India. Never before or never after have seen the ball swing. Lever never swung the ball so much even in England and virtually faded away

    • @mombaassa
      @mombaassa 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was the ball, not the Vaseline. Earlier in the day, the umpires assessed that the ball was out of shape, and had it replaced. The replacement ball, swung prodigiously, from the very first delivery, by Lever. In Lever's next 16 deliveries, India went from 43 for 1, to 49 for 4. Given that the very first delivery swung viciously, I don't think there was time for the Vaseline to have done its trick.
      Vaseline is a petrolium product. Any shine that it imparts to the leather, would be short lived, as it would also start eating into the material. That's why we shine our shoes with polish, not Vaseline.
      England, just got lucky, getting a ball that produced more than the usual amount of swing.

    Fletcher was clean bowled by Chandra for 8 at Delhi 1976 ,also reminds me in 1972 Chandra clean bowled Keith Fletcher at Delhi . Fletcher was still in his batting stance when he lost his off stump and Farokh Engineer from behind the sticks murmured " Woodpecker strikes". Chandra was a champion. How Clive LIyod lost his off stump bail in Calcutta Test 1974 is still a mystery....

    Then I was in class four. But still can remember. We lost in Eden Garden too in very bad manner. Indian batsmen failed to face pace bowling. But later it was alleged Jhon Lever resorted to unfair means to achieve extra swing. We played well in last two tests after losing the series.

  • @houstonbalaji4768
    @houstonbalaji4768 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    This brings back memories of the controversy surrounding Lever’s use of Vaseline. I even remember the big picture The Hindu published of his bowling action on its sports page! Honestly, I don’t remember anyone swinging the ball as much under Indian conditions as he did in that test - before or after. There probably was a bit of foul play there 😉 😉. However, India’s batting was poor so we deserved to lose. Only 7 years after this test India became a different cricketing country under Kapil Dev’s leadership by winning the Prudential World Cup. At the time it felt like an eternity passed between 76 and 83 but now seems amazing to me that we transformed ourselves in such a short period!!!

    I still remember this match. Venkat Raghvan came as a nite watchman. The commenter was praising him before he could finish his sentence, Venkat was bowled. India could cross 300 only once in the series on Bombay batting-friendly wicket. Vishwanath could score only one half-century in 10 innings.

    Many thanks Jai Ji . I hope you have clips of the other 4 tests and the 3 vs New Zealand that happened before this one. These were the 2 series that got me interested in cricket. Lever's wicked inswing is clearly visible. I remember out of 6 innings in first 3 tests, only 2 fifties were registered by India - Gavaskar in Delhi and Brijesh Patel in Calcutta.

    Lever toured India in1981 and I saw him in a Test match@ Bengaluru !
    He was at the boundary line making funny albeit a bit vulgar gestures to entertain us , the crowd !
    Kapil Dev hammered all including him for an entertaining brisk 54 or so !
    By then Kapil had become a real crowd puller and batted aggressively , which was unheard of those days in Test cricket !
