The director's 2nd film "The Lighthouse" is also a critically acclaimed masterpiece. So far, Robert Eggers is on a roll.

I love this movie! It's gorgeous, atmospheric, and quite authentic to the time period.
However, I felt I was in the minority of people I knew who enjoyed it when it came out.
I think some people were just expecting a different kind of movie, and the ending in particular really divides the crowd. But I thought it was a true Puritan nightmare, slow-burning and truly immersive with the entire family's descent into ungodly madness.

Great video again, this is one of my favourite films. Blood letting was an old medicinal practice that was believed to make you better by releasing “bad” blood from your body. That’s why they cut Caleb’s head.

The scene where Tomasine "admitted" that she was a witch never rang true with me.
"Maybe it was a dingo?" Am I evil for laughing at that comment? Probably. But I didn't expect it.

That movie was such a breath of fresh air. I own the Blu-ray. It was very artsy and non-linear. It's such a break from the current trends in Horror and the many cookiecutter contemporary Horror films full of tropes and clichés. I love it. And Anya Taylor Joy is a really good, young actress.

I seriously recommend watching this movie with subtitles on. It made me unsure about liking it upon first review (no subtitles) to absolutely loving it upon second watch (with subtitles). It was a difficult film to comprehend in some scenes just because I couldn't make out what some of the characters were saying due to the genuine dialogue they were speaking.

Another highly enjoyable discussion. You never cross the line and become a frat boy goof fest; you clearly know and love film, and have respect, and yet at the same time you can also have fun, inject some mockery when it's deserved. There are so many TH-cam reviewers (especially of horror movies) who produce an unappealing stream of foul language and snarky ridicule-- rather than a worthwhile glimpse at a flick. Thanks.
As for this film: In an age where horror films, especially from Hollywood, are mostly junkyard drivel, this was something unique and welcome and delightfully different. I like some ambiguity occasionally, and the ending made me think. So I checked around and found a few interpretations of the plot:
    A. There was a witch nearby who terrorized the family (she could take many forms), and her master claimed Tomasin as a new member in the end.
    B. The theory-- shared in this video review above-- that maybe each family member hallucinated what happened to her/him, because of food bacteria or stress or something else.
    C. Tomasin was, knowingly, the main witch for the whole time, and in the climax made her final vow. (Honestly this concept makes no sense to me-- given what we see from her POV during the story.)
Granted, this narrative is not as heady as something like David Lynch's strange Hollywood mystery "Mulholland Drive" (of which I'm deeply fond), but it definitely makes you think. By the way, you fellas should review THAT film (if you haven't yet)!
Any way you look at it storywise, the bottom line is that "The VVitch" is a vvonderful cinematic debut, bursting with an unsettling vibe of impending doom. Good stuff.

I wanna see Hollywood do number 2 where she has all the powers of all the x men and goes bat shit on the town. I'm talking fireballs, hail fog, lightening, wind powers, ice walls, everything and they have sticks an rocks. Then the other witches have to stop her cos she will kill everyine and they need them (to feed off). Third film would be the witch vs all the other witches John wick style but with magic powers.

  • @Para2normal

I think the audiences appreciation of this movie depends on what sort of horror/ghost story you enjoy, if you want fast pacing, a clearly defined villian and gory special effects it is not for you. If you are a fan of the Ghost Stories of an Antiquary by M.R.James and have an interest in folklore it is likely to be more your cup of tea. The archaic language means you need to concentrate more and it is definitely a slow burn. I'm from northern England and have always had the awareness of the Pendle witches so maybe I see this as a telling of a story with relevance to my roots.
It definitely is not for all horror fans, but neither is the Saw series, however it is as it says in the titles "A New England Folktale" and in that respect it succeeds admirably.

I'm not at all interested in flashy pop-horror movies quite the opposite. This movie to me was just not good, it was very predictable, not at all original, the characters were wholly unlikable, and the pacing was dreadfully slow not mentions to the lighting was suicide inducingly bad, and the ending was comically terrible and lazy. Look, these are just my opinions and it's ok to disagree. :)

I dislike horror movies...I've love this film so...
About the religious aspect I recommend reading the New testament, especially the gospels to really get the sense of awe how Eggers actually did the religious side justice (we have the contrast of the promise of afterlife while in life following the teachings no matter what; and the promise of worldly possessions by the Devil (in the movie and in the temptation passages)) and its not imprinting modern or postmodern ways to dismantle these believes (I'm not passing judgement on these ways of critique of religious believes in a general sense, just that it would be out of character for the family members to do so).
I furthermore consider it truly a great work of art cos even tho I disagree with Eggerses stated premise about witches being the embodyment of male fears of powerful female...(lower)
(not to go too deep into this, there was a long standing interpretation throughout the middle ages that the "sabbaths" and flying stories were just dreams and temptation of the Devil that you should confess and maybe do some penance for; into later literalistic interpretations that these things were literally happening and that people started getting into serious trouble over (didn't need to be burning in the most cases; also there is a need to distiguish magician and which latter being explicitly in league with the Devil while former performing sacrilegious rituals))
...I really appreciate that he did not "kidnap" the characters to be his mouthpiece and leaned on the realia (not to make a historiography (in the scientific sense) but a literal depiction of the sources' claims like court proceedings) and let the characters exist within this framework with their believes that haven't need to be questioned within a modern frame of reference, yet still depicting relatable human experience that is building upon the condition the characters and their humanity - like kids will do stuff they shouldn't cause they can't really imagine the repercussions even tho they know the thing being wrong (like selling ones soul to devil and pretending to be a witch to scare somebody)
I must contrast it with athmospherically similar movie Sleepy Hollow that goes pedal to the metal on the naive modernistic detraction (in a sense that the "old ways" are depicted as a over the top ridiculous acts of cruelty by unthinking automatons - the police and the court system) of the pre-modern society and its practices (even tho there is supernatural, it is a really mechanistic thing being used by the antagonist and not as a direct result of some sort of divine will as some of the charcters are claiming)....(I realize that rather mechanistic rituals exist in irl pre-modern religions (Buddhism) but not in the mainstream christian context of the time)
Im sorry for the parentheses, I'm sadly use to writhing like this while using footnotes for clarification :)

Thomas Babilon a movie doesn’t have to be entertaining or fun. The movie was meant to be incredibly unsettling and filled with dread. A movie doesn’t need to be fun or entertaining to be great. I’d never call godfather either of those things, yet it’s unarguably one of the greatest movies ever.

The thought that god turns a blind eye/doesn’t exist and the only thing you’ll find in your darkest hour is the devil himself is existentially terrifying.

I saw this in the theater and I honestly thought it was going to be a piece of fucking shit. And man I was so wrong. What an amazing movie. It actually gave me the chills in certain scenes and the atmosphere was incredible like you guys talked about in the review. I understand Iain when he says he doesn't really want to see it again anytime soon but I think it's because of the dread and darkness in the film. I've only seen it twice and I love it but I'm not rushing to see it again either. Glad you guys also mentioned the soundtrack. Great review like always. Groovy.

I didn't enjoy this as much as everyone, I was wondering what the darkness or the the witch was meant for. Was she just some primal attacker or was she tormenting this family because they think they are following god in their own way. It looks pretty but that is about it. Thank you for the apple explanation though , it helps the reasoning a bit.

The witches I think drank the blood of the baby which made them young. There was about six different ones and they can transform in to animals ie the hare was one. The witches were indifferent to the family other than they wanted their blood to make them younger and power them up.
