FILM DESCRIPTION:
This hit domestic comedy-drama concerned the fortunes of an extended African-American family recalled through the eyes of young narrator Ahmad (Brandon Hammond). Ahmad's world revolves around his grandmother, Big Mama Joseph (Irma P. Hall) and her three daughters: workaholic attorney Teri (Vanessa Williams), newlywed salon owner Bird (Nia Long), and Ahmad's housewife mom, Maxine (Vivica A. Fox). Each sister is in turmoil. Teri has lost patience for her husband Miles (Michael Beach), who wants to quit the law and take up music. Bird doesn't realize that her husband Lem (Mekhi Phifer) is about to be humiliated by her ex-boyfriend (Mel Jackson). And while Maxine's relationship with her husband Kenny (Jeffrey D. Sams) is going well, her relationship with her jealous sister Teri needs fixing. These conflicts boil over at Big Mama's traditional Sunday dinners, where the matriarch plays peacemaker. The ritual faces extinction, however, when Big Mama suffers a stroke -- but Ahmad is waiting in the wings to take her place. Soul Food launched the directing career of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, native George Tillman, Jr., who based the script on his own family experiences. In the summer of 2000, Soul Food was spun off into a cable TV series.

You are absolutely correct. Having been in that type of position myself I can honestly say that when you are successful you have allowed a family members in that take you totally for granted and use you as if you are their personal ATM and then when you cut them off all of a sudden there seems to be a problem or issue. Teri is the only one that deserve that money and all the rest of them don't deserve a dime

I remember when they were trying to put out the fire and Lem made it worse by throwing water on it, somebody in the theater yelled, “NO FOOL, NOT WATER!” 😂
But it's crazy fire fighters use water to put it out!! Lem did what he knew
But then he made up for by saying look for an extinguisher and he was the only one who thought of that idea

I kinda hated the ending because no one took accountability really, they put Terri through the most in this movie and the only thing she got was to stay around the same people who stay breaking her heart.
They also ate the same food that killed big mama. The same food! Nobody learned the Lesson, nobody went on a diet! And that’s the lesson.

I wouldn’t agree with that 100%. Faith took accountability when she said sorry and decided to leave. But Max and Ahmad were telling her to stay. Also, her and Miles broke up after this. AND, you may not like when I say this, but Terry is no saint either like her budding into Lem & Bird’s business calling blimp to beat on Lem& Lem spending weeks in jail. She also had no business spilling the beans on Bird’s pregnancy.
My grandma died in 2001 when she passed our family just fell apart after that but were slowly getting to be family again. I love this movie reminds so much of my family.

Mmmh as a black person I had big issue on how they treated Terri even when I was a kid. If my brother in law would cheat on my sister with our cousin ..they would be all dead to me ! Period! I would NEVER invite them at family dinner and would just cut them out of our family. Before that I would make sure they know/feel the pain ! That whole forgiveness because we are a family is BS! That's why some people are entitled because there is no consequence!
I understand the forgiving, God is my strength and my forgiveness but I don’t have to be around you like ever.
Don't forget, which everyone seems to do, Terri's sister stole her boyfriend (who became her husband), when they were teens...
I don’t like how people go off on miles and faith more than they do Max and Kenny because Miles and Faith was a vulnerable moment. They instantly regretted after. Max and Kenny stayed together and married and had kids. Plus Terri herself understood what led up to it in the end of the movie when Miles told her we haven’t been happy for a long time now and Terry says I don’t know what happened. Not saying it was right for him to cheat of course but I understand what led up to it.

3 years after this movie came out Soul Food the series premiered on Showtime in the summer of 2000, the show is really good

naturalpn7 I know right 5 seasons of it even though the cast was different with the exception of Irma P. Hall who reprised her role as flashbacks in flashbacks. Ahmad’s last name was changed to Chadaway in the snow and Bird’s real name was changed from Robin Joseph to Tracy Joseph, Terri moved on to Damon, etc
That show was good. I loved Lem in it, seeing him push himself to do better was so nice to see. I love those positive portrayals of black men.
The only thing I disliked was how much Bird was just Wilding out.

If we plan to Covet the winnings than we have already lost. When we think of sharing the Wealth We All Win 🏆!!
