Teri (Vanessa Williams) attacks Miles (Michael Beach) with a knife after she reveals that she knows he slept with her cousin, Faith (Gina Ravera).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
This hit domestic comedy-drama concerned the fortunes of an extended African-American family recalled through the eyes of young narrator Ahmad (Brandon Hammond). Ahmad's world revolves around his grandmother, Big Mama Joseph (Irma P. Hall) and her three daughters: workaholic attorney Teri (Vanessa Williams), newlywed salon owner Bird (Nia Long), and Ahmad's housewife mom, Maxine (Vivica A. Fox). Each sister is in turmoil. Teri has lost patience for her husband Miles (Michael Beach), who wants to quit the law and take up music. Bird doesn't realize that her husband Lem (Mekhi Phifer) is about to be humiliated by her ex-boyfriend (Mel Jackson). And while Maxine's relationship with her husband Kenny (Jeffrey D. Sams) is going well, her relationship with her jealous sister Teri needs fixing. These conflicts boil over at Big Mama's traditional Sunday dinners, where the matriarch plays peacemaker. The ritual faces extinction, however, when Big Mama suffers a stroke -- but Ahmad is waiting in the wings to take her place. Soul Food launched the directing career of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, native George Tillman, Jr., who based the script on his own family experiences. In the summer of 2000, Soul Food was spun off into a cable TV series.

Joshua McDowell Terri being a highly experienced and talented lawyer would have been been even more of a reason why it would have been hard for her to get away with this. Chasing after a person with a deadly weapon then stabbing them would be hard changes to walk away from without punishment. She's knows the law, knows the lawyers that will be most likely anxious to prosecute her and probably familiar with the judge, and most importantly getting a jury to sympathize for you and go against the obvious verdict. You can always think that using the first thing that comes to mind as a defense of what to do will get you off. You sometimes gotta think about later on down the line. Non of those two hoes would be worth going to jail over, getting a criminal record, nor facing prison time.

I sympathize with Teri. She just had one too many responsibilities on her hands. Faith and Miles did her wrong. And Maxine just happens to be celebrating her eleventh anniversary with the man that was originally Teri's boyfriend. This knife scene was epic. Good movie. I wish TH-cam would upload it for free.
And they made Teri out to be an all bitchy character throughout the movie, most of what she did was unselfish and she winded up footing most of the family's financial responsibility. Family members got mad at her when she expresses the fact that she's tired of always having to come out the pocket or cover someone else's tracks. They did her character so wrong in this movie, luckily in the HBO series that it was made into, Teri was made out to be more seem more nicer and softer and more relatable. Nicole Ari Parker played the hell out that role of Teri Joseph.

I just recently watched this movie. I never realized how horrible they treated Terri. Yeah Terri had her issues, but she had every right to say "Fuck the family". Her sister stole her boyfriend from her then married him and had children. She pays for everything. Then her husband cheated on her with Faith. What kills me is that the movie made it seem like Terri was bitter and a bitch, but she was just clearly hurt. However, no one, hardly big mama ever stopped and thought how Terri felt but was always in her pockets.

This is a really deep scene. So sad and emotional, especially at the end when Terri cries, breaks down that tough exterior and melts into the arms of the youngest sister. It's a real tear jerker. Kudos to super beautiful and talented Vanessa Williams for playing this character so brilliantly.

I feel it because in my family anytime anyone needed money or anything they came to me for it and I gave and gave and gave and never asked for it back and didn’t even expect it back. Then fast forward to now I’m the outcast in the family because I refused to let my mother keep treating me and my family like crap and now so many relationships are ruined because of her. I don’t even have a relationship with my two sisters, my mother, my nieces and nephews, and so on when we use to be so close. Their kids are basically grown but I had kids late in life so my girls are 2 and 4 and they don’t even know majority of their family because as my sister says it her kids are grown and she don’t want to be around little kids who cry and are loud. So yeah they used me until I finally said no and now I’m the outsider missing my sisters and our relationship…….

I went crazy on my ex boyfriend just like her, pulled a knife and backed him into the fridge. It took every last ounce of my strength to stop myself from going further. When I found out he was cheating on me with my sister, I completely lost it. They'd break into my apartment when I wasn't there, do their nasty and leave. I started finding clues and confronted him about it and finally he confessed to everything. She would even pick him up in her car, take him somewhere and do it like that. I completely despise my sister. All my cousins stick up for her by saying "oh well she sleeps with everyone" that's no damn excuse. I understand the betrayal, it's beyond awful.

In the movie Teri was ruthless (for a good reason too). In the TV show when it first aired I could see why she was the way she was. They took her for granted. Both Vanessa Williams and Nicole Ari Parker played the heck of that role.
I see why terry was upset with her family because she knows she was getting used by them and i know thats not a fun feeling.

I love Teri! When I first saw this years ago, I couldn’t stand her. I thought she was snobby and incredibly cold and bitter. But now the woman in me understands her. She always loved her family and tried to keep everything together, but got little to no appreciation. Then to be betrayed by your sister AND your cousin. That’s rough! I was so glad they did the series. You really got a chance to see beneath Teri’s surface. She’s my favorite!
