Kirby please be aware of the perception when using words like
Tone which can be used to describe different attributes when
    related to different topics.
As you know Tone can equal
    a products overall tonal color
    Ex, Bright, Dull, Flat, Treblely,
Bassy, warm, cold. Like a choice,
By the designer to create his products to have a specific tonal
quality that is related to his line
of products. That they all tend to
have a Recognizable Branded sound that you can pick out from
    others on the market. Example
Moog products all have a notable
sound signature, Korg does as well
& Roland verses Yamaha, or a Hammond. I'm a Keyboardist so
I brought these products up first
just to prove my point ( sorry if I missed your favorite brand ) it was
once much more clearly defined &
the makers knew what it was about their designs that gave them
there specific Sound or Tonal output that we could hear quickly
as we often would say aha that's
an Oberheim, Kurzweil, Sequential Circuits synth. I want one of those baby we would convince our wife
or girl friends. A girl friend is an easier to pitch & sell than a wife on these types of non urgent needs.
Oh Guitar Players do the same things the products we require and want cry & beg for do vary. The Guitarist do typically have an advantage over us keyboardist.
As Its easier to ask for a new
$100 FX pedal or a reasonably priced ESP, or a Ibenez 6 string
with a locking nut & special pick ups rosewood neck Floyd Rose
whammy bar. Which could be had
at a street price of of $750 of course todays pricing a PRS can
get quite pricy & Fender or Gibson
Custom shop Guitar can retail in the thousands. But now to talk your baby into selling all the furniture, the washer & dryer just
sitting on bean bags chairs and
pushing two bean bags together for a bed. Now this is a dance that
must be choreographed by Paula Abdul and then needs fine tuning
to get a Prophet 5 $4000 a 2nd stand a $540 ATA flight case Volume & Sustain pedals plus a Boss Stereo Chorus pedal more cables & patch cords plus a $540 flight case, I gotta protect my investment you wouldn't want me
to scar my new Synth while were making 4yrs of payments on it.
And ypur Chevy Van or VW bus so
you have a way to drag all your gear from job tp job, club to club
,bar to bar. Im telling you. You had to be a good player for them to believe in you after all last year it
    was a Hammond porta B & Leslie.
    6 months later a Fender Rhodes 76
    Key Suitcase. A Honer Clavinet,
that Mini Moog, a String Ensemble,
The Korg Mono Poly, the Oberheim
4 voice, Moog Tarkus bass pedal synth. And much more plus a huge 24 input Soundcraft Mixer & 2 QSC
Power amps plus 4 Yamaha 3way 15 speaker cabs. Phew that makes me tired thinking about loading in & out up 3 flights of stairs playing
5 nights a week until 2 am and then working a 40 hr. A week job for the health ins. My point most companies had their own tonal Sound. Guitar amps, Mics, lots of
Home HiFi & pro audio gear its what made them so desirable and
sought after. It lasted for quite some time ( add an ARP & Roland space echo, what the vocals needed that Tone Color & effects as well & we all sang in a 4 piece group playing covers for 3 of 4 sets and sneaking in our originals
to sell albums & tapes tee shirts & halter tops. But since we added MIDI & Sampling then Physical Modeling the manufacturers chose
to steal that which gave each company its own sound its become easy to recreate the Tone Color of the others into the new multi timbiral Work Station flag ships were soon affordable. I could recreate my huge set-up with 3 or 4 of them and I have every sound in & out of this world.
I no longer need as much outboard gear there's plenty of DSP power
In my Synths plus real sounding Pianos, Rhodes, Clavs, Strings,
Vocorder, Horns, Hammond B3, C3, A3, Farfisa, Vox, Wurlies, with
realistic Leslie emulations in quad surround, with balanced outs and
a Digital Mixer that can switch all my patches Fx's, Volumes, Stereo
Image, Eq's I can save to match
the Room save it and recall those Eq curves on my Next ,Show per room, with auto feedback killer.
A stage monitor mix or wireless in ear monitors, pitch shifting, vocal harmonizers and more. But we cant always afford to have all this
great gear and a huge home recording studio DAW, DACs playback monitors, racks of hardware effects. I do love your videos and your take on building cabs. But not just to copy them but
to explain the faults of some and teaching about the Words we speak aka Nomenclature. Understanding how to pick drivers
& horns to achieve the desired results. Plus the use of PCs and software to aid us in the cabinet
design, ie cubic footage, and the parts needed to build the cross-
over networks to best avoid dead spots, the baffles I haven't heard you speak of yet. Or about phase cancelation from occuring and remember to talk about the T factor or speaker dispersion.
Man will this text ever end !
Yes It will & sooner than you think

Five years later I see your great video. I use my headphone’s mainly for watching tv. Everything I watch is streamed, only football is something I watch live. I do listen to music and podcasts, but that when I’m out running errands to run. I do care what I look like as long as there NC so don’t hear it lol. I can’t go over $400 and I put soundcore 1st and comfort 2nd. After that I just want something that will hold up to 6-8 hours of wear every day. I’ve looked at the Sony xm4 & the xm5.”, sennheiser momentum 4, Bose qc, and the Beats Studio Pro. The beats I get the best price. Now I will be using my apple tv4k 3gen, and my iPhone 11. I’ve tested my ears on my soundcore liberty 4nc. I have five different eqs the first two sit right on the line, the next two are flat the next goes up 3 the next goes up 4 and the the last one goes all the way up. There are ten spots in n the way to the top. I like an exciting sound when there lots of action going on, and a lot of the music I listen to I like that way also. But what my dilemma is, that with the amount of time I watch tv I watch that not the sound I want. If I could choose what I wanted price not a issue, I’d like to get
the AirPods Max, just because I have apple products. So if that didn’t made any sense, I was just typing away. So based off all of that do you have a recommendation, even if it’s not one I have listed. Thank you if you made to the bottom I appreciate that. I subscribed and gave you a thumbs up. 👍

I originally found the channel through searching into the enthusiast side of audio to begin with, and although much of the info in this video I had already gathered through google-fu, the delivery is much appreciated since it's also broken down in steps, it's also easier to consume and hopefully retain compared to reading a big blob of text. Would also enjoy an inclusion of multiple driver IEM into the possible driver type video, but either way great stuff man!

@kirby meets audio, Hi just come across your channel and subscribed, very good video thank you. With a planar driver do you get the physical sensation of bass like on a Sennheiser Momentum BT headphone and also is the sub base noticeable , I’m looking at getting a pair of the Drop Panda THX which would be my first planar headphones, I enjoy my bass but not addicted to thumping bass but i may find too smooth a bass not to my enjoyment? I’m no expert on headphones and tend to use them as BT connected with IEM’s for my wired listening, I’m quite new to the world of higher quality audio so your channel I think will be of great help to me compared to many of the usual reviewers I tend to have followed so far.

Well, I have AliExpress's planars GL600 and cheapest copy of Grado (that's not a copy, just some psychodelic fantasy of). Dynamic drivers in Chrado so far from my ears, so it can't make enough sound pressure to transfer low end, so i changed drivers from 32 ohm to 150 ohm, soldered type-c dongle (you know, small usb sound cards for smartphones that have no jack support), and that dongle have enough volume at 80-85% at home vs. 40-50% with planars... So as result I have warm, creamy, dark voice with planars pluged with silver cable to Zoom U22 and crispy bright dynamics in Chrados

I used to spend my money on loud speakers and receivers like Onkyo. News days I don’t care about that. I moved into headphones. I’m not a snob whereas I have to have some ridiculously priced set of headphones. I like nice stuff but I base what I spend on usage. So 600 to 1,000 is as far as I will go. I have some 250 Ohm byerdynamics. And an old pair of Senn’s. I was going to get this 600 dollar pair of Beyerdynamics. Then I started looking at Planars. It’s almost like you need different sets of headphones based on the type of music you listen to. Is that a fair statement? When I want to listen to classical violin or music with vocals then it’s planars. If I want to listen to dance club house or trance then use my dynamic headphones. Is that about right?

Hi Kirby, I recently bought and built the Elder speaker. I love how it looks, and hate how it sounds. I cant get the included 3 inch drivers to produce any bass. An unofficial frequency response test yields that the speaker really doesn't produce much volume below 400hz. You say in the elder sound test video that you used 4 inch drivers as opposed to the 3 inch ones that came in the kit. I wonder if that would help. I am a little disappointed that a $200+ audio kit cant even come close to a $100 JBL speaker especially given the size difference. I did use 3/4inch plywood throughout the build instead of the recommended 1/2 inch. Please let me know what you think. I would love to get a dialog started about how I might get more low end from my speaker. I would even be willing to try purchasing passive radiators or different drivers if it would get the desired results

I am listening to this guy tell me how planars have a more detailed and tonally accurate mid range, while having just realized that my Sennn. HD800s offers more resolution in the mid range than my Hifiman Arya, and that the Arya has tonality problems with a lot of upoer mid range and low treble instruments, which simply do not sound correct. So... eh. OK. I mean, have you ever compared a planar to a real acoustic instrument? You may be surprised...

hmmmmm, interesting. don't think i've ever tried planar headphones and i'd very interested to now.
that video about different driver types would be very interesting, please.
i'd also really appreciate a breakdown of various amp specs and parameters if you're ever stuck for ideas, and how one should go about picking one. its all a bit overwhelming and your explanations really provide alot of insight in a very pleasant and digestible way. :-)
