  • Welcome to part 1 of my series on how to become a farmer, or buy land. I am going to share my story of how I did it, and who I am so you can hear why you can trust me on this. I share my background, and when I started my farming operation and what it's grown to so far. Stay tuned for the next videos in the series. I plan to do quite a few breaking down all the elements of buying land, growing crops, and different avenues of farming.

Farmers are the backbone of this country. It’s ridiculous that they don’t get insurance. Our taxes should be going towards helping the farmers.

I appreciate that but I just wish our taxes would go away and I'd be happy!

"You do live in debt." Yup, college drop out here, I'm used to debt at this point

Thanks for that information! Very encouraging. I'm 33 with a wife and three little boys. I grew up on farm and Pennsylvania, we live in southwest virginia now.our goal is to get back to farming, is it even possible to buy land and get going on that making about 32,000 a year? What are your thoughts or advice on?

Would you recommend using fsa loan for land and equipment?

Thank you for watching! I would not be afraid to start with them for your first land purchase but I would be one and done with FSA. Any additional purchases through them they will take leans out against everything you own. Farm Credit is who I'd recommend or even check around with your local banks and see what kind of programs they offer.

Seriously consider Ramsey's advice when you hear this though. Do you want to own your farm or be at the mercy of govt grants and the bank that lends you the land?

If I took Ramseys advice and said no banks or lenders I'd be lucky to own a farm by the time I'm 65. I've never received a grant for purchasing land but I can tell you that financing land has greatly increased my operation. As I pay on them I'm building equity and a lot of lending corporations will view the difference in owed amount vs appraisal as equity. Meaning if I bought a farm for 250k and now it appraises for 650k I've got 400k worth the equity I can borrow against/ use as collateral in place of a down payment on another farm. Debt is scary to a lot of people. I get that but there is a such thing as good debt. Farmland is good debt, great debt actually. It's only increasing in value. The wealthiest people in the world still finance land. I can tell you honestly financing land has been great for me.

@@LHFarmsTN completely agree with you. When you look at all wealthy people they finance land. Ramsey’s advice is irrelevant in farming/ranching because you are looking at it as a business and making that business pay for itself.
