Felling and Chainsaw Milling Junk Trees (Quaking Aspen.) Is it worth it? #28

  • Camping in the woods, felling trees and chainsaw milling is just about all that gets done at Ringworm. This property is mostly covered by cedar, but also many large, old, rotten quaking aspen (trembling aspen) that need to come down in order to keep the area safe. This was the final try at milling it with a chainsaw to attempt to make serviceable lumber.
Because I’ve gotten so many questions about the gear that I use on the channel, here are some of the most important pieces I use every day:
My Favorite Piece of Gear- Chainsaw Helmet amzn.to/3uuW5xB
    Granberg Chainsaw Mill amzn.to/3cdRXvn
How I Keep the Mosquitoes Away! amzn.to/3frenvh
    Big, Black Log-Peeling Knife - Becker BK9 amzn.to/3oZIeOH

Bug Net Rooms I Use amzn.to/3uwOK0l
Heaters in My Tent and the Deer Castle amzn.to/3frQ7Jh
Thank you all so much for supporting this crazy endeavor! Without you folks donating to Surviving Ringworm, I wouldn't be able to even consider staying out here in the wilderness a second year making videos. You seriously blow my mind!

How about setting up your mill under the lean-to where you parked the ATV. Rig a stout log beam overhead from which you could rig a come-along or two to hoist the logs onto your sawhorses for milling. Your back and knees are worth saving. Good daily life vid!

They say this wood does not put splinters in your bottom. They also burn nicely as they are a hard wood but you have to dry them for a couple of years, unless you have a wood boiler. Really! I wonder if it was the same species of aspen?
I have started to realize in the last couple weeks that not all of this type of tree is junk. It's just that the trees I am dealing with are old and no longer healthy so I'm lumping them in with younger trees that would likely produce some nice lumber.

This Florida boy loves these video's so keep them acoming, daily tasks and big projects and bless you for doing them. I'm curious why you don't do the native thing and use a Teepee made from the local flora, long thin pines stacked in a cone shape covered with the local sod and greenery. A small fire would keep you warm all night. Opened at the top in summer and mostly closed in winter. Plenty of head room and no nails or screws needed, you have everything you need in nature and thousands of years of proven worth.

  • @rodmeisterful

Not to get to meta on you, but I believe you are changing the world in an interesting way. First of all you are showing how it’s possible to live a very fulfilled life with almost nothing but a engaged and positive attitude. Secondly you are providing an example of that very rare sub species of a human being who is genuinely humble and realistic about their impact on the world and refuses to take themselves too seriously. This is a super constructive role model to those who find you!

    • @survivingringworm2202
      @survivingringworm2202  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

What a nice thing to read. I certainly don't see myself as a model of anything except that of a guy that doesn't get much joy from anything but screwing around in the woods. Guess it's a bit hard to take yourself seriously when what you do every day is by no measure what the world would find "of use."
But then I never met an inspirational speaker that had a lasting impact on my life. On the other hand, I have met several weirdos that made me think, "yup. That looks about right."
Ya just never know who will find your way of living worth looking into, I guess.

Yes do more... it is realistic and that’s what makes it interesting! Life is mostly little mundane things and seeing your life makes it interesting.

Thanks so much. Very glad people are out there enjoying a variety of videos.
The way you described it, is just how I do- a playground for kids that use grownup tools.

Keep them coming. I enjoy watching, heck even my wife has really enjoyed watching your videos (where she wont watch many others I watch) and has started learning stuff also. We really enjoy your sense of humor, and always seems to catch us off guard. I have been following ever since the Deer Stand cabin. I love camping in the cold, my wife does not, so I get to kinda live vicariously thru you.

Thanks! You are the second person that recently mentioned watching with their wives. Blows me away! I guess I always just pictured single guys as the only viewers. Oh, and my girlfriend. But I pay her to watch.

@@survivingringworm2202 My wife and I just recently purchased 20 ac of solid trees. So I am trying to show her things that can be done fairly cheap an inexpensive with using what we have on the land and chainsaw. I grew up in the trees where she did not. She has been watching others for tiny cabin ideas, and yours was one that popped up that I showed her and she was immediately drawn in by your humor. So, keep it coming! I have to admit, I have done a tone of winter camping, but not winter living like you are doing up there. And there have been many things you have shown that I honestly never thought or being frozen when typically here in the Texas area, we thaw out during the day.

20 acres is perfect! On thing I have learned the hard way in respect to significant others- if you really want to get them excited about something you are really into, spend a good chunk of time up front making sure they are having fun. Even if you have to go out of your way the first half dozen times you go out there- do whatever it is she wants to do whether it’s picking flowers or hiking around or laying in the sun. If ya don’t make it enjoyable right up front, there’s no way to later change her view of the place/activity.
Just two cents from a guy that screwed himself over once or twice in that regard.

Fascinating to see "real world" forestry with rotten trees, lightning strikes, fungi etc. The risk of barber chair etc must be extreme. I watched from beginning to end with interest. Thanks for sharing

Glad it kept your attention anyway. Barber chair is definitely something to watch out for. For that reason I always get well away from the tree as it goes down. No standing around to get a close up of the action.

Trees are like neighbors; sometimes you gotta take a chainsaw to them before they kill you. Is that what you meant?

Ryan, yes, just keep doing your daily tasks/chores. You lead an interesting life. Keep the Faith. Continue to "Ride to the Sound of the Guns!" And when you get there, "Keep Up the Fires!" Scouts Out. AATW!
