    Just to share some tips related to flat french seams that can be used on dashboards, consoles, etc. and other on covers.
    For this demonstration I am using a solo needle for everything. A 110=18 needle size. The thread size, black and yellow is 92 size.
    The stitching length can be shorter than 6 mm the measure I am using. Regularly, if the thread is thin, in this case 92, the stitches would be 3 to 4 mm long.
    So, when to use the long top stitching. If I would have used a thread size 138 the stitching length would have been from 4 to 6 mm long. Car seat covers do not use longer stitches. 6 mm is the maximum length as a standard. Longer stitches, such as 8, 9, 10 to 12 mm are mostly used on furniture. Thicker threads are used too. From 138, 207.
    Two ways of crossing the french seams are also shown. One has a bulky crossing and the other shows how to avoid it.
    I hope this information is useful and you also find the video enjoyable!
    Cesar

    Great examples, the last really looked professional for only a few extra steps. I wonder if your machine has a reverse as you do t seem to use it when locking in the start and finish….. also notice the lack of a knee lift for the foot

    It strikes me that these seams would be very weak if used on seating since you are relying solely on the black stitching to hold it together. Would it not be better to use a backing strip of some kind so that the yellow stitching could do something other than to be decorative?

    • @Zan_zelee
      @Zan_zelee ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That would make sense: if they were seat covers. But, these seams are just instructional “sample” decorative stitches.

    • @Cechaflo
      @Cechaflo  ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Yes, you are right! In the case of seat covers it is advisable a backing strip to reinforce the french seams:
      th-cam.com/video/vU4mAuH1y_U/w-d-xo.html
      Very thin backing strips are also useful to reinforce 'flat' double stitches patterns on armrests and other car items.
      In some cases such as door panels, consoles, etc. it could also be glued down directly to the panel with no backing strip:

    Доооолгими и холодными ночами пока стоял Наполеон под Москвой он придумал сей шов :D
    В то время как от их портков отваливались оловянные пуговицы.
    Так что из-за пуговиц Наполеон и проиграл.
    Думал, что сеи швы делаются двойными иглами.
    У машинки видно реверса нету, хотя плохому танцору .... И реверс не поможет.
    Чуть не забыл.
    Купил себе портки во французком московском декатлоне (который закрылся удачно в прошлом 2022 году), портки разные по цвету а покрое однотипного, детально выявил, что швы явно кто то и какой то технолог проглядел, начинаются на одной стороне потом бац переходят на другую сторону, как так было можно лохануться не понимаю. Допустим с левой стороны выглядит и сделано всё правильно с правой шов по середине выходит в другую сторону ....

      Es verdad lo que Ud. dice. No se recomienda para asientos de carro. Puede ser usado en partes que no lleven movimiento ni flexión.

    Do you back stitch more than once in the same spot in stead of going back three?

    • @Cechaflo
      @Cechaflo  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am afraid of the unsewing on the ends. Three times of backstitching makes the stitch end safer. Above all on the lower edge.

    I have an opportunity to buy a Pfaff twin needle machine. I've never used this set-up before and I'm not sure if I'm taking on more than I can handle. Would this be a step too far for a novice? Thanks

    • @Cechaflo
      @Cechaflo  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It is a great opportunity. Pfaff is a good trade mark sewing machine. Remind you most of these machines make straight or curved parallel lines of stitches.
      A double needle sewing machine is of great help to make perfect twin stitches.

    • @Johnsormani
      @Johnsormani ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Make sure that’s it’s a triple transport machine. Sometimes you also find double needle machines with just dual transport

    • @Cechaflo
      @Cechaflo  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Johnsormani Yes, there is a difference between a double transport machine and a triple transport one.
      In a double transport machine the feeding/dragging of material(vinyl, leather) is done with the feed dog below and the rear big presser foot. The needle and front small presser foot only move up and down to press and make the sewing.
      In a triple transport the feeding of material is doen with the front small foot, feed dog and needle included (unison feed). The reat foot only moves up and down to press the material.

      Some cars use seamless french seams. Useful for door panels, consoles, armrests, etc. Not advisable for seat covers.
