Living On $175K A Year In NYC & Georgia | Millennial Money

  • Brieonna Johnson, 29, earns $175,000 a year as a full-time nanny for two families, one in New York City and one in Atlanta, Georgia. She makes part of her income through occasional side jobs as a travel nanny and newborn-care specialist.
    This is the latest installment of CNBC Make It's Millennial Money, which profiles people around the world and details how they earn, spend and save their money.
    Read more about about her budget breakdown here: cnb.cx/2JTz9Xv
    After graduating from Spelman College in 2015, Brieonna Johnson knew she wanted to work with children. She applied for teaching jobs, but the pay was low and she was worried about paying off her student loans. Although she had worked as a part-time nanny in college, she hadn't considered that she could turn it into a full-blown career. But then she came across a nannying agency in Atlanta.
    "It was like a whole new world opened up where I discovered nannies can get paid benefits and full-time hours and guaranteed hours so that I'm making sure I'm making the salary that I want," the 29-year-old tells CNBC Make It.
    in 2016, Johnson found a live-in position with a family in Atlanta and fell in love with the work and the kids. Being able to live with the family was a major draw as she's been able to avoid spending money on rent.
    A few years later, in 2019, Johnson's boyfriend accepted a new job in New York City, prompting her to move, too. She landed another live-in job with a family in Manhattan in March, where she worked five days a week. Then, in November 2019, she transitioned to a new schedule where she'd work seven days straight, then have a full week off.
    The flexibility allowed her to resume working for her Atlanta family as well, flying back and forth between the cities each week. Although her boyfriend's work eventually took him elsewhere, Johnson decided to stay in New York.

I have always used websites like sittercity.com but at some point it just came to the point where I would get referrals from previous families I've been with and also just the nanny community and families knowing your resume and experience. I have to also add that it differs drastically and you have to be prepared for the quick changes in this field. This is not a field for just anyone. My mentality is save save save (I dont go through an agency) because your contract Vulcan be one thing and the next day it's over. I had a 3 yr minimum contract with a family in 2019 and then boom. Covid hit and changed everything. In fortunately with another family now but it's a big change.

This is the first time I’ve heard of nannying as a full time gig and I’m really interested in it. I’m quite fond of kids and am the oldest of 4 siblings so I have some experience with babysitting. What are some of your day to day tasks as a nanny? Is it draining work?

    • @nijjagreen5963
      @nijjagreen5963 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@cerealis_5432 I definitely understand and I will say stay in college because it only helps with your resume as a nanny. Now I will say dont just look st her story and think it's that easy. I pass up on many job offers like this with that salary and terms because I am a parent myself. The hours for positions like that are typically 10 to 12 hrs with flexibility. Not having a life and sacrificing things definitely is apart of the game for that salary. I typically do 10 hrs a day but since the pandemic it's been 8 a day because the parents work from home now. Every family is different. I've had families that fidnt have tv, strict curriculum implementing and tight schedules to very chill families that has a different parenting style. I always encourage every nanny to have a standard of care and enriching activities for each age level and developmental stages. There is so many tips but finding a family that fits with your standards is important.

    I feel like a lot of people expressing shock at this don’t understand that segment of NYC wealth. I used to pet/house sit and during “wedding season”, easily earned nearly $500/weekend just to watch people’s cats and water their plants while they went to the Hamptons/Martha’s Vineyard/other out of town spot for the weekend. One couple paid me $100 to sit with their dog for an hour because it had anxiety. You can easily make $40K/year just walking dogs. Obviously you can make as much, if not more taking care of small humans. I tried tutoring for a bit and easily found families in Brooklyn that would pay $50+ an hour (and some tutors get paid even more, some as high as $500/hour for test prep) but parents were more particular than pet owners so I opted out. It doesn’t surprise me one bit that nannies get paid this much in NYC, especially a FT live in nanny.

    There's something wrong with a person that has 15 grand in debt and is paying a chef 600 dollars a month to cook. Clearly if you are not paying for room and board you can easily pay off debt within 6 months at her current salary.

She also needs to stop talking about them because they can find someone else with the quickness. Girl, keep what you got and don't take it for granted. Because things change after one video.
