This is one of the best auto repair tutorials I have ever watched. I turn to TH-cam for most everything and often they're terrible. I'm considering getting a forester in the future but was a bit apprehensive since the engine layout is different, but ou make it look easy enough.
I've watched several other tutorials and searched dozens of forums posts - this is by far the easiest to follow. Worked for my 2000 wrx 2.5 Appreciate the upload, bro!
Great DYI video! When it came time to change my Forester plugs, I went to several Subaru forums and they all made it seem so complicated. Watched your step-by-step video and it gave me the confidence to tackle this on my own. Piece of cake! Shop wanted $200+ to change the plugs. Did it my self for $30 and in about an hour.
Damn. Super underrated video. The other video that showed up before yours, the mechanic was ten minutes in talking about $50-200 dollar specialized spark plug tools and hadnt even shown an engine yet.
Thanks dude I try to be as self reliant as possible but for some reason my brain was just not putting this one together. Really appreciate your help in finishing a MUCH longer job than expected lol. Started with master cylinder, then booster, then check valve, then air filter, then looking for vacuum leaks, then got an obd scanner, replaced ignition coil, then no codes what so ever and then fear kicked in..Guy who installed my sparkplug wires forgot to clean off the sealing edge around the boot so had some water get in and cause some minor corrosion on a plug, changed the sparkplugs and was good to go. Thank you so much again!
As someone who has a Subaru, I want to say thanks for the tutorial, it will help many. As someone who has a WRX, I hate you for having such easy access to the spark plugs lol
Just got hold of a Subaru Legacy 2.0 from 2000 and it's been parked up for 5 years. I went to it with the intention of oiling the cylinders before start up, but didn't realise that the plugs were on the side. Didn't have the tools or any explanation as to how to do it. But thank you for this video, as it means I can give my new Legacy a good service before I use it as my daily. And the fact you explained the size of the extensions is bloody brilliant mate. Thank you!
Thank you Carsntoys for this terrific video!! A royal pain compared to an acura integra / honda civic engine, but you covered all aspects of the procedure in great detail. Fyi, although tight on space, I was able to do it with just regular sockets (no swivel). Do not let it discourage anyone if missing a swivel extension. Patience is key.
Thank you so much. I am not a mechanic by any means but your video completely solved my problem! I was having a rough start on my 08 Impreza 2.5i (107k miles), along with low idle, shaking and vibration while stopped, and almost complete loss in acceleration. My check engine light came on with code P0303 and P0304. I pulled out and replaced all four spark plugs and my car is running great now! Thank you.
I really wish I’d seen this last month before dropping $800 with the local subi dealer service department to replace plugs and leads plus diagnose a misfire that shouldn’t have needed doing. Thanks for a clear and easy video.
I replaced my spark plugs thanks to this video. The old spark plugs wouldn't lift out, so I put a very small amount of sticky putty inside the socket (and that worked fine).
ArT oF wAr They are cars that you can just drive and drive and drive and drive and drive and drive and drive and drive and drive and drive and drive and drive and drive and drive and drive and drive and driveand drive and drive and drive and drive and drive and drive and drive and drive and drive and drive and drive and drive and drive and drive and drive and drive and drive and drive and drive and drive and drive and drive and drive and driveand drive and drive and drive and drive and drive and drive and drive and drive

Coming from an old 2.0l Lancer engine, I was havin a hard time figuring out exactly where the plugs were on my new horizontally opposed engine. This was absolutely perfect, thank you so much!
For the novice/beginner mechanic, you might want to explain rightly tighty, lefty loosey, clock wise , counter clockwise. If they never used a ratchet, that could be the difference between success or irreparable damage.
if you dont know the difference between righty tighty lefty loosey then you probably shouldn't be working on vehicles. haha but true thatd suck to strip out the heads
Imagine doing this on a h6 subaru... Gotta say few years ago i was scared of owning a subaru because of this exact part of maintenance... Now I'm confident I'll be fine
Very helpful! Was looking to replace plugs on my 2000 EJ22 obs and ran into issue with getting to the plugs. Slightly different things need to be done to get there but the heads and plug access are nearly identical. Looks more like a pain in the ass than it really is
Thank you so much for your upload! This was extremely helpful in changing my spark plugs which I had never done before but had always wanted to. I noticed an instant improvement in the running of my car's engine. Very clear and concise instructions.
+CarsNToys my cel reads cylinder 3 misfire im guessing its a plug since it seems to run ok, 1 do i have to replace all 4 or just the one im tight on cash. and 2 i read you were supposed to apply some anti corrosion stuff is that true?

Was able to change my spark plugs on my 2008 Impreza 2.5i, thanks to this vid. Got NKG from subary dealership to DIY. I'm at 55000 miles and I don't think the spark plugs were ever changed before even though the dealership said they did it at 30000 miles. Thing is, at 30000 miles, they charged the labor for maintenance (including changing spark plugs) but did not charge for the spark plugs parts so I think they did'nt do it. Still old plug weren't that bad at all. Anyways, I noticed a bit of motor oil on my socket when I removed the old sparkplugs. Is this normal ? Had to wipe the socket every time. Was able to change every one of the four plugs using your techniques (got all the same socket extensions you got, including swivle socket). Was even able to fit my torque wrench (Tekton 3/8 inch, 10-80 ft-lbs) in every spot and torque to spec at 15.5 ft-lbs (21 N-m).
Thanks for the Video. FYI, that's not the return line for the power steering, but the suction line :) Don't confuse them or you'll have a bad day changing out your PS fluid!
Head gaskets are below the cylinder head, spark plugs go into the top of cylinder heads. Spark plugs sockets have their own gaskets that if faulty will leak oil into that cavity
When you pulled out the air filter assembly/housing, what was that white reservoir attached to it? My 08 Impreza is missing it. I’m trying to find the part so I can buy and attach but, I can’t find it. Great videos btw, thank you
Sameer Ahmed Thanks, Sameer. If you have the 2.5 4-cylinder it's the same motor as shown in this video. (This video was done on a '10 Impreza 2.5 4-cylinder.)
6:38. What is that large piece connected to the air assembly? It has 2 screws on top? Can that be removed? (Nothing to do with plug removal). Great explicit video.
I believe it's the chamber air intake. Here is what it does (not my words): The air intake resonator is simply an expansion chamber, a wide spot within a car's intake pipe. ... The primary purpose of the air intake resonator is to inhibit pressure wave harmonics, which causes air pressure in the engine and restricts the amount of airflow through the RPM spectrum.
Torque down to spec at 15.5 ft-lbs (21.0 N.m) for the non-turbo 2008-2011 Impreza 2.5i. I check it out in the subaru impreza service manual (you can find it as a PDF online).
Great video, thank you. One question, about how long should I estimate the job to take? I'm not a master mechanic, but am not a novice either. I was thinking maybe 2hrs or less? Thank you again, very helpful.
Im definitely tackling this project myself. Went to the shop for an oil change and they recommend a 60000 mile warranty check including shark plug change wanted $700.00 for a 2 hr job they said. I said, NO THANK YOU!
Hi, just watched you video on how to replace spark plugs on a 2009 Subaru Impreza and remove battery, got it- remove air filter box, got it but how about removing the spark plugs from below will this work as well instead of removing parts or too much trouble?.Thanks
An update. I have a 2013 Impreza Sport. Everything is the same to remove the plugs as it was on this video with one exception, the plug caps are bolted on with 10mm bolts. The rear driver side cap is almost impossible to get off with a socket wrench because of the clearance and presence of a aluminum tube passing by that location, especially if they are torqued very high as mine were. I was unable to release the bolt so I'm taking it to a shop to replace the final plug. Other than that everything else went smooth.
I have a Subaru Impreza, 57k miles. I have to get a recall fixed to replace the valve springs where they will have to take the engine out. The service guy told me that replacing spark plugs at 60k miles is recommended. He said its like $350 and the engine needs to come out, but that they can do it for $100 while my engine is out for the recall and not charge me for labor. I need help. Yesterday I felt my 2008 Impreza hatchback losing power going uphill. Could this be the issue? It was super hot and I parked it for 4 hrs under the scorching sun.
I like the fact that you show the size of extensions that you need. No one else has covered this.
Thanks. I try to make it as simple as possible. Cheers

we must use subaru's plug?
I was just quoted $500-700 to change spark plugs and wires in mine. This video makes me feel confident to do myself. Ill be trying it today!
Damn. Super underrated video. The other video that showed up before yours, the mechanic was ten minutes in talking about $50-200 dollar specialized spark plug tools and hadnt even shown an engine yet.
Thank you. I have a repair & maintenance playlist that will help along the way - th-cam.com/play/PLl6xt4Pyay3DCdqelfXU09jKAThu8dhtW.html
Love that subaru uses the same stuff for every car. Under the hood of this impreza looks IDENTICAL to my 08 legacy.
Looks exactly like my 09 Legacy as well
Similar enough to my 00 wrx
Makes shopping in the junkyard that much easier.
Looks just like my 2011 impreza thanks for the help
His 2010 Impreza looks the same as my 2010 impreza

are you Able to show how to replace the fuel injectors on the subaru, I have a 2.5i 07 impreza base model
Awesome and clear video!
What size spark plug socket did you use to get the plugs off?
Nicely done video! Great commentary for every step you do and you manage to get great angles despite the space limitations! Thanks!
Coming from an old 2.0l Lancer engine, I was havin a hard time figuring out exactly where the plugs were on my new horizontally opposed engine. This was absolutely perfect, thank you so much!

Thank you for sharing this video!! It’s always nice to watch somebody else do it first and learn from their experience!
A great rule of thumb on tightening spark plugs W/ a crush washer is to tighten 1/4 turn AFTER washer seats/touches cylinder head

I’ve been looking around for a video for changing Plugs on a Subaru.... BY FAR THE BEST ONE
YOU JUST GOT ONE MORE SUBSCRIBER... Good Job BROTHER!!
Thank you. Glad to help
Thanks for this. I'm going to attempt changing the spark plugs tomorrow. We'll see.
I'm doing this in a couple of weeks. This has been a hugely helpful aid. Many thanks
Great video!!!
Thanks to you I just changed spark plugs for the first time.
Glad it helped
Never trust the "pre gap" check it before install. If it's OK then Hooray! All that looks like soooo much fun!
And sometimes the gap is too big. I just give them a tap and bend the tip down.

"Who the fuck designed this???" - a 2005 outback owner dreading doing this in the winter
A Goldwing/BMW like horizontal engine in a car. Who the hell...
I agree. You did an amazing job showing the spark plugs placement. Very easy to follow. Thank you so much!
Great video, thank you. When I removed spark plug boot it had oil on it. Where would that have come from?
Head gaskets are below the cylinder head, spark plugs go into the top of cylinder heads. Spark plugs sockets have their own gaskets that if faulty will leak oil into that cavity

I think it's good to at least check the gap on spark plugs even if it's supposed to be pre gaped.
Very precise, concise and clear. Thanks bud! I'm guess this would apply to a '12 Outback?
Sameer Ahmed Thanks, Sameer. If you have the 2.5 4-cylinder it's the same motor as shown in this video. (This video was done on a '10 Impreza 2.5 4-cylinder.)
Yes it is 2.5 4 cylinder motor. I will order the parts and execute your directions and let you know how it goes. Thanks!

Awesome buddy thanks. Looks really easy.
Excellent video. Easy to understand and good explanation of everything!
Glad it was helpful!
When you change the spark plugs on a 2.5I Impreza, do you have to reset the computer or anything?
So do you need a special socket for spark plugs or will normal sockets work?
Perfect video on sparks! Bravo
Yesss. Awesome, great stuff. I'll be ordering some spark plugs now ^.^ Thank you!!!!!
This is a really good video, that's why I liked it
2024 and this helped me out, thanks a bunch sir.
Thank you for the run down that would have been a huge pain!
Thanks, this is a GREAT VIDEO. The best on this issue! Very helpful! Good job.
Glad to help.
I have a 2008 Impreza 2.5i can you please tell me what socket size I would need to change the spark plugs?
Try a standard 5/8 spark plug socket.
CarsNToys alright, thanks
Hi, just watched you video on how to replace spark plugs on a 2009 Subaru Impreza and remove battery, got it- remove air filter box, got it but how about removing the spark plugs from below will this work as well instead of removing parts or too much trouble?.Thanks
Would everything done in your (AMAZING) tutorial video, apply to a 2010 Legacy 2.5i ???
Thanks!
Working room will vary but pretty much. Thank you!
An update. I have a 2013 Impreza Sport. Everything is the same to remove the plugs as it was on this video with one exception, the plug caps are bolted on with 10mm bolts. This is apparently a lot easier on the Imprezza than the Legacy. Frame is right there in the way.
Excellent info on replacing plugs. Many thanks
Glad to help.
Please make a video how to replace a power steering pump on 2010 subaru impreza 2.5L
Is there much difference between the 2.0L an the 2.5L motor for the placement of the Spark Plugs?
Just what I needed to see. Thank you
thank you posting your video it helped me big time to figure out how to change my spark plugs in my 2012 subaru lagacy
+Quinton White Glad to help
I have a Subaru Impreza, 57k miles. I have to get a recall fixed to replace the valve springs where they will have to take the engine out. The service guy told me that replacing spark plugs at 60k miles is recommended. He said its like $350 and the engine needs to come out, but that they can do it for $100 while my engine is out for the recall and not charge me for labor. I always thought spark plugs were an easier job... are they giving me a run for my money?
i've never done spark plugs on anything before and i did it on my impreza last night.
previous owner must have been told the same prices because I don't think they ever did them and the car has 118k miles lol.
it is just a bit tedious but you just have to pull out the battery and the intake stuff. And like OP, use a swivel extension or you can kind of get away with using two 3 inch extensions and attaching them one at a time, space is limited. It's like a 1 hour job just make sure you have everything you need first.
Thanks for the video! Stupid question...At 9:38, you put in a new filter. Is that the air filter? Thank you.
Glad to help. And yes, it's the air filter. It's not a stupid question. We're all here to learn. Cheers
Thank you! Your videos are great!
Bro I swear I got told by 4 people I’d have to get under the car. I’ve had my spark plugs in the box for like 2 years 😂 bout to put them in tonight.
Hello do you know if on the 2.0l Diesel the fuel injectors are easy to remove ? Or is it totally different from the 2.5l thanks
subaru engineers definitely laugh at our struggle lol
Question: What symptoms would indicate spark plugs need replacing?
Most common symptoms include rough idle and/or motor shutting off. I can also effect the catalytic converter.
A reduction in fuel economy is a sure sign. Difficulty starting is also a sign. 60,000 miles is one of the easiest figure to base your plug change interval on.
Holy frig! And the dealer wanted $400 somethin to do this!? Awesome vid. I am going to do this shit myself lol
+Jordan DesBiens Yea they're nuts!
Hi what is the white tank with air intake cover ?? did i see it wrong?
I am try to trying to remove valve covers to replace gaskets. Need to remove the oil filler neck but the bolts are hard to get to and slightly stripped, any suggestions?
thanks bud for the awesome video
I have a subaru baja turbo. Is it the same? Everyone keeps telling me I need to pull my engine.
I need help. Yesterday I felt my 2008 Impreza hatchback losing power going uphill. Could this be the issue?
It was super hot and I parked it for 4 hrs under the scorching sun.
You are awesome my friend im just getting into the game . Huge help
So do I use this or 7AIX on my bone stock 2018 sti?
Can I use this tutorial for my 2017 Subaru Impreza sedan? 2.0L
Very similar. These boxer engines haven't changed much.
Wow this is nearly identical to the EJ251 in my impreza. I think I even have more room because my car is non abs
Wow painful, I've only done this on civics and camrys and the plugs were all on top, so easy, but only 4 cylinder of course.
francis chow It's a bit more work on these boxer motors but not too bad. Cheers.
Great video, not bad at all. I have to put cooler spark plugs in my 05 2.5i for my supercharger project. Wasn't sure how hard that would be.
Thank you. Glad to help.
Would this replacement method be compatible with a 2013 model?
Very similar.
Thanks for the video, very helpful and well made.
nice 300zx logo
So what size socket did you use to remove the spark plugs?
5/8
Thank you, you're a great help!
Welcome. Glad to help.
Very clean work , nice 👍
Thank you. Appreciate the feedback.
What size is the spark plug socket? You're covering the size with your finger in the video :(
5/8"
Helpful! Thank you!
Awesome!
Will these instructions work for the Subaru Legacy?
Most likely.
