I'd like to go back 40 years in time, when I'm hearing it!
One of the privileges of my life is to be of an age that I got to follow Dire Straits from day one. What a revelation this song was when it first appeared on my FM radio.
Same for me and also Mark as a solo artistst
I was there in '78, but in Canada the next time I heard Straits was "Twisting by the Pool"
I remember it as if it were yesterday. Still one of my favorites. Still have the original LP

Pick is great. But terry’s drum performance on alchemy is something to behold. He lifts every song and riffs alongside mark with incredible patterns
It's impressive how similar to the alchemy version it sounds even though here the drummer, sax player and 2nd keyboardist (the las two aren't even present) are different. Mark can make everything sound good ❤

Oh that's true! I just remembered, hal wasn't present on the recording of making movies but he was on the tour. Thanks, I will edit it
@@mbertrand Correct; it’s Hal Lindes who had just replaced David Knopfler in the lineup at that time.
And both are better than the funeral march/grand band versions from BiA and OeS street tours where the soul had gone from the group.
Brutal version and as always played live in a different way. Actually Mark knows all the chords...... Immense guitarist, poet and songwriter.

Alchemy live is a great album
Alchemy is good apart from boring private investigations but Mark is clearly enjoying this gig more, smiling all the time pretty much

Eu comecei a tocar guitarra por causa dos Dire Straits. 'Sultan's of Swing' foi um grande choque pra mim! Foi uma porrada em meus ouvidos, e foi por causa dela que me tornei Guitar-Solo; mas tenho que confessar algo a vocês..
Eu odeio essas improvisações que Mark coloca na música.. ele nunca toca Sultans igual ao CD que são os nossos solos de referência; nunca canta igual ao CD..
Enfim, eu prefiro as versões de estúdio.
Live at BBC é o mais próximo que já vi.
O Alchemy é uma obra prima, mas não gosto do que Mark faz especificamente com Sultan's ao vivo.
Mas já li em algum lugar que ele não gosta muito dos solos dela em estúdio, e ele coloca 'Ao Vivo' aquilo exatamente o que ele gostaria de na realidade ter feito.
Mark Knopler é um gênio da Guitarra. Um dos maiores e mais inovadores e geniais da história.

What a stunning performance finally uploaded to the official channel. Terry's drumming in Alchemy is fantastic but there's something special to say about Pick's technic here. A very early sultans with the extended outro.
Pick is poetry 7:54. Thierry is a threshing machine :-)
Pick has a great swing feel but Terry was a hard hitter, totally different ,both great.
Mark can always "make it cry and make it sing" like nobody else.

@@johncollins5552 I only graduated from the 1st degree of the State Music School in the accordion and piano class, so I am moderately competent in the matter of percussion, but professional colleagues (drums) say that Pick vs Terry is a completely different league.

I was born in 19th Dec 82 ❤ and I love Dire Straits since then
All these years of loving this song and this is the first that I see Alan is the one playing those solo notes towards the end on the keyboard that I always thought Mark was playing singly on his guitar-at least until Chris White jammed along with the sax.

Man, the crowd at the final solo makes me smile uncontrollably. I've been to many concerts but no crowds have come close to one as excited as it looks to have been in the golden era of rock. Wish I could've experienced that time

Am I the only one who doesn't like the sound of this recording? The guitar sound is very small and far away, lacking body, lacking bass. In my opinion the sound engineer didn't work very well here, the mix is unbalanced and the levels of the instruments are inconsistent, I absolutely don't like it ... that night something went wrong there! Perhaps the matrix used for video recording was different from the F.O.H. mix. also because I remember that tour very well, I saw Dire Straits a few months later, in Sanremo - Italy at the end of June 1981 and the sound was spectacular, pure power. I still have the recording made with my walkman and it sounds better than this concert in Dortmund!
I agree with you, this is because Mark was using the original Schecter pickups, in 1981 he changed the Seymour Duncan pickup, this changed the sound, he found the sound he wanted, especially in 82/83 when he changed the amp from Musicman to Mesa Boogie, as we see in Alchem.

This version of Sultans sounds a bit soft like a pop thing. I am huge fan of this band, however, I like most their early work when there were four of them.
