I was saying to my friend, we maybe need to think about a preseason friendly against a team like Chile, Uruguay or Romania. Just to get those initial jitters out.
The gap from WC/Autumn intl to summer tests/Rugby Champ is too long. Any test is better than going straight in to vital test series for any team. 6 Nations till summer while shorter is still requiring at least a warm up test. This is especially important if you still have players in Europe who are in the finals stages of their domestic teams competition as there is still today.
@@saints16o5o87 This is true, it does feel a bit long, but bit there are all sorts of other factors that might affect the feasibility of extending the test window: - Remember that the European teams are really close together and traveling time is equivalent to the time it takes to make a cup of tea. Your wife and kids can easily make the trip from London to Cardiff. In the SH, this means time away from families, extended stay overseas etc. - Players unions. Any decision you make regarding where and when which tests are played have to be taken up with them and they need to sign off on it. This means several countries with their own unions all agree. If one changes something (like the test window) other unions might fight against this. - NH teams tour here at June/July because if they come any later (even late winter) they will probably melt - SH sides have won 9 out of 10 world cups. Why change the formula if we are this dominant? Nonetheless, I think there is a simple solution: why can't we field a team like SA "A" play a few games against some nations that struggle to get tests. Play those guys you want to debut etc and see how they do against Japan, Fiji or Samoa. Or if they want the game to be a test, call it a test.
Congratulations mate, i expected us to lose with such a young inexperienced squad but I think they did far better than i anticipated regardless of the score. Good luck against Ireland buddy
I have followed your channel during the World Cup and the 6 Nations, your pre match and post match analysis is EXCELLENT. Love your honest analysis…. Can’t wait for the Ireland Tests. Springbok fan… ❤
I have a few thoughts: - That double tackle from vd Merwe was downright incredible - Factoring in the try, definitely MoM performance from vd Merwe - Fassi under the high ball was hella impressive. Keeper. - Roos was a bit too exuberant, but some good runs from him. Definitely a worthy addition to the Bok setup - Hendrickse had a shocking first half but I felt he came back nicely in the second - I'm a huge fan of Esterhuizen but he was very quiet - Grant Williams is an enticing prospect but he needs to be AT those rucks and not in the mass of humanity INSIDE it. - Dixon, we definitely need to see more of him. - Kwagga is much much better off the bench than he is when he starts - I expected us to have a tricky first half. We didn't look to good but after Rassie presumably went off at half time, we came right - I think the Welsh can be proud of their charges today. They were severely outgunned but fronted up bravely. - I hate complaining about the ref, but can someone please explain the scrum penalties to me? I saw us scrumming them away and then getting penalised. Is this something to do with the new rules? - The 22 drop out for a held up ball is just dumb - Sacha, what can I say? Very good debut
@bbmcars was perplexed by his performance, we've been crying for ages for him 2 be the starter.Man looked like he was woken up 2minutes b4 kick-off..Enjoy the Republic Tim🇿🇦it's the greatest
@@SlekelekeSwela-du4mw I know, right?! We all saw this big beefy lad thinking that he could be our Jonah Lomu and then get this anonymous performance. On a tangent, go watch that kick again that Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu took after the vd Merwe try. When he put the ball down in front of the posts and just kind of pivoted and kicked. No runup, not from what I could see. It was a real "windgat" move and I loved it. Smooth like butter, that lad is.
Agree with most of this. With Kwagga I thought he looked good. But he looked isolated with his scrambling and charges. Felt like as a team they didn't back each other up fast enough.
You hit the nail on the head and I’m glad you talking about it! World Rugby keeps saying they changing laws to speed up the game, but the unnecessary use of the TMO is wasting far more time and slowing the game down a lot more than scrums are.
"Be the best at the things that require no skill" 🤣🤣🤣 Excellent visual comparison - Koch/Mr Incredible. Rassie's team choice displays his main goal which is building the next World Cup team. Rather be on it early than late. Great breakdown of the game once again and kudos to you on getting all those pronounciations right!

My wife was at the game whilst I was watching it on telly, and I sent her a message before the end of the game, which read something like, "I predict that the Springboks will win the next World Cup." She sent a message back saying, "What a surprise. " Yes, I'm a Springbok fanatic, but I believe that although there were nervous jitters in the first half, especially, there is some phenomenal talent in this team. When Rassie moulds these guys, they'll be brilliant. Well done, Tim, your prediction was spot on. You're going to have a blast in SA. We're a hospitable bunch, especially if you like the Bokke.
SA looked rusty for sure. Thought Fassi had a great match. Very good under the high ball. Sacha looked the more composed number 10 and did well. The Boks will have to play better against Ireland but I suspect the team will look very different.
For me, I think this was more of an experimental game for the boks. Glad to see we are creating more attacking options with Tony Brown as attack coach. Never saw the boks run it from their own half in a while. Looking forward to when the attack clicks. We will be dangerous.
Agree questionable. I am a saffa but question the yellow against Walsh left wing and the fassi's yellow. At the end of the day a great win for the Boks and potm debut van der merwe.
Great channel mate. SAFFA from NZ here. The best possible team doesn't necessarily mean the best possible players. Sometimes, it's more about the combination.
I’m a little confused at World Rugby’s decision to minimize scrumming to keep the game moving yet letting the TMO bring the game to a complete stop. Contradiction 🤔
Rassie is locked into the next world cup. Everything that the Boks will do from here on in is geared towards having optimum depth and confidence in all departments by the time the big show rolls around. He is a scary judge of talent.
I think it’s safe to say Sacha is a brilliant kicker. For him to kick a 50m+ kick on debut is magnificent. As for Jordan Hendrikse he still has a lot of work to do. A.Fassi was brilliant under the high ball & he’s attacking abilities is extremely good. & Edwill van der Merwe is just a beast
Wales is so tricky that you can't be forgotten even after they got wooden spoon in Six nations... I'm glad bokke got the stuff together. They enjoyed themselves...and that definitely Toni magic to show
Tony Brown: lots of tricks and unexpectedness coming. In the longer time frame, he's going to have a field season with those backline athletes. Magic is coming, no doubt.
Thanks Tim. Agree overall. - whilst the captaincy in the bok team is a shared one amongst the senior cohort, it lacked energy under PSDT. I say this with deep respect for the man and his skills. I feel he is best left to roam and create advantage over managing the game. 2. The tryouts for the most part on the Bok side showed immense promise - you say rusty I say lack of cohesion and identity. They need time. 3. Evan Roos, not for the first time I believe, has been too self absorbed, generally lacking warrior instinct. Cameron H will soon be on his tail. Roos lacks rugby IQ in the moment. 3. Edwill v/d Merwe is heading for stardom. Humble, open, talented and fearless. 4. Sacha F-M has talent in spades, needs some space to explore. In 3 months he will be pressurizing Libbok for 10. If Pollard comes in strong and fit, then I think he could do very well under his wing. As always thanks for the prompt and clear rapportage. Welcome to SA. Travel safely
As a South African, what an absolute beauty of a review. Really enjoyed it, I was extremely excited for all the new guys to play, but also nervous… Wales always feel like a formidable opponent against us, you can never write them off… Great game, great opponents, great review (Edit: Just remembered you said you are coming to South Africa, I am really excited for you and I hope you enjoy it, I know you will)
1st half was a DISASTER. Boks fast asleep. Rusty AF. Then Rassie yelled at them in the lockers and fantastic ending especially Sacha's 52m kick and Edwill's debut man of the match try.
Masuku has something about him but after watching Sacha play today and how young he is combined with the flyhalves we already have, I think a handful of really good games for the Sharks is not really meriting him playing anytime soon. Especially not in the upcoming Ireland games or in big games in RC.
@business3867 SFM had not played at FH position in 2years what merits him playing? Masuku is legit and has more than a "couple "good games, they're both ahead of Manie L respectfully
You are the best game analyst I have ever watched. I have been following you for about 6 months. I look forward to each pre and post game comment. Would note that Hendrickse runs laterally every time he gets the ball. This puts the whole backline under pressure and erodes space.
Love your channel and comments. Always so positive! The most impressive bit is that you're the first non-South African that I heard, reporting on this game, that managed to pronounce Evan Roos' surname correctly! Such a short name but no one got it right! How did you know?! 😂
The 23 was selected on merit, but they needed to manage the game time of the 'rookies' so some of them started ... De Allende will start v Ireland ... the first half debacle was a lack of teamwork, a new Tony Brown 'quick hands deep' attack, bad decision-making and this was the first game as new combinations except for the tight five .... at the half Rassie reminded them of their mortality and they were a different team when they came out the tunnel for the second half. Marx still a little rusty, PTSD was a little slow, Evan Roos is going to have to play a bit better to compete with Hanekom and Fassi is simply majestic in the air ... all in all I think Rassie has data points for his Ireland Squad. Check.
Always thought this game was a Springboks reserves trial, and some new guys really shone: Sacha and Edwill, especially. New combinations struggled to click, so the backline never sprang to life, unfortunately. On a side note, has there ever been an attractive Wales vs SA game? Ever?
@@EggchasersRugby For all his kvetching about SA rugby, I believe Gatland has adopted a very similar game plan for years and that is why the games are always so ugly - like boxing in the mirror.

Really enjoy the channel!! As a South African it's good to hear some honest unbiased opinions. Also unsure about the Manie Libbok omission, but Hendrikse has had a great season and earned his opportunity. Maybe didn't earn another start with his performance, but one to watch. Manie had some rough starts too, so might be a good back up going forward.
This was an amazing game. As a South African i didn't enjoy that the tri was awarded. It changed the Wales momentum. But you could say also about decisions made by ref in Wales' favour. Wales showed tenacity, discipline and how great control over their scrums and rucks. They do have a problem with guys being offside. But that can easily be fixed. South Africa just had the right guys in the right spots. Well done Wales and Great work Boks. So proud to be South African.
Got up this morning, went to your channel and BOOM, a video. Great way to start the day. World Rugby wanted to speed up the game, but all the referrals and TMO intervention just halted the game numerous times. Much more disruptive than just resetting a scrum. Aside from the scrums, I think the calls were generally good. The back line showed flashes of what is possible. I can't tell you how exciting it is to have Tony Brown involved with the Bok squad. Safe travels Tim! Looking forward to having you in SA.
SA was rather disjointed. Wales gave them a big wake up. Edwill. But I knew how good he is... And the great upside for SA is 10 and kicker depth. Manie has a problem.
@@riaannel1884 Siya is cool but my betbis FM is the crown prince. Those kicks of his were long (Siya has a shorter range) and bulls eyes. FM is lauded as a great playmaker and a good defender. I have not seen that yet but if he is he will be the favourite.

Welshman here. Congrats to SA. I was fairly Content with this performance. Considering the side we had out, we were still in the game with 20 minutes to go. I never thought we were going to win but before the game I genuinely expected a much higher score line from the Saffas. I’m Not convinced by Winnet at all. He offers zero in attack and has no X-factor whatsoever. Wainwright has stepped up to the plate lately and really grown into a talisman in this squad. Dewi Lake is SOOOOO FAR AHEAD of any of our other hookers. His physicality and tenaciousness is crucial to this team. Expecting a tough tour to Aus. They are looking for retribution for the World Cup. If we can win 1 test and beat the reds, I will be happy.

Great synopsis, thanks Tim. To touch on some of your points.. You are spot on, the TMO came into the game far too often. Too.many stoppages for TMO and referee reviews. World Rugby made such a big deal about wanting to speed the game up to make it more entertaining, but then the ref and TMO grind it down to a whistle blowing tedious affair. The best matches are those where the ref and TMO do not become the central figures of a drama. Then onto the influence of Tony Brown. Wow wow wow. Springboks are going to be incredibly dangerous when Tony Brown's attacking style of play becomes second nature to the team. If they do not lose their impressive defensive capabilities entrenched by Jacques, but add this attacking style to their game plan... well as a Bok supporter I am thrilled for what the future of Springbok rugby promises. They are on the path to becoming a brilliant all-round team. With their obvious prowess in the scrum, adding that attacking game to the backline... yes please
If possible, go make a turn at the Academy week at Jeppe High School in Johannesburg as well ( 24 to 28 June ) .
@@saints16o5o87 This is true, it does feel a bit long, but bit there are all sorts of other factors that might affect the feasibility of extending the test window:
- Remember that the European teams are really close together and traveling time is equivalent to the time it takes to make a cup of tea.
- NH teams tour here at June/July because if they come any later (even late winter) they will probably melt
- SH sides have won 9 out of 10 world cups.
We've often lost first games of the season, think we should have played Portugal first, then Wales... Before the Irish
One of the best sport channels out there. Fair and constructive. From a saffa 🇿🇦
Fantastic unbiased coverage and feedback as usual, Tim please have a great time in South Africa , bring something warm it is quite cold at the moment
I have followed your channel during the World Cup and the 6 Nations, your pre match and post match analysis is EXCELLENT. Love your honest analysis…. Can’t wait for the Ireland Tests.
Springbok fan… ❤
I have a few thoughts:
- That double tackle from vd Merwe was downright incredible
- Factoring in the try, definitely MoM performance from vd Merwe
- Fassi under the high ball was hella impressive. Keeper.
- Roos was a bit too exuberant, but some good runs from him. Definitely a worthy addition to the Bok setup
- Hendrickse had a shocking first half but I felt he came back nicely in the second
- I'm a huge fan of Esterhuizen but he was very quiet
- Grant Williams is an enticing prospect but he needs to be AT those rucks and not in the mass of humanity INSIDE it.
- Dixon, we definitely need to see more of him.
- Kwagga is much much better off the bench than he is when he starts
- I expected us to have a tricky first half. We didn't look to good but after Rassie presumably went off at half time, we came right
- I think the Welsh can be proud of their charges today. They were severely outgunned but fronted up bravely.
- I hate complaining about the ref, but can someone please explain the scrum penalties to me? I saw us scrumming them away and then getting penalised. Is this something to do with the new rules?
- The 22 drop out for a held up ball is just dumb
- Sacha, what can I say? Very good debut
Agreed with pretty much ALL of that totally
Esterhuizen is no de Allende. Performances like this demonstrate that.
The Vincent Koch graphic was perfect. Great analysis.
What u mean?? It was just a regular pic of Vincent 🤔
Hope you have a wonderful time in my home country, Tim, and cheers for your analysis!
Love your analysis on the games mate! South African here. Yours and Big Jim's channels are excellent!
The Ref and TMO thought we tuned in to watch them.
Kriel is a superstar.
You hit the nail on the head and I’m glad you talking about it! World Rugby keeps saying they changing laws to speed up the game, but the unnecessary use of the TMO is wasting far more time and slowing the game down a lot more than scrums are.
Jesse Kriel was full on attack mode with his tackles
Your channel is good for rugby! Can't wait to have you in the RSA! Hope we live up to your expectations!
"Be the best at the things that require no skill" 🤣🤣🤣
Excellent visual comparison - Koch/Mr Incredible.
I met her, we had a great day… awkward… just messing mate!
SA looked rusty for sure. Thought Fassi had a great match. Very good under the high ball. Sacha looked the more composed number 10 and did well. The Boks will have to play better against Ireland but I suspect the team will look very different.
Agree with you on all counts
Agree I think we need to start with a better kicker ,love from Pretoria
I wouldn't mind Pollie starting at 10 and Sacha on the bench for Ireland. 👀🔥
It looked more like a training session for SA, good to see the young guys getting a run out. Fasi, Edwin and Sasha played well
For me, I think this was more of an experimental game for the boks. Glad to see we are creating more attacking options with Tony Brown as attack coach. Never saw the boks run it from their own half in a while. Looking forward to when the attack clicks. We will be dangerous.
The ref made some strange decisions
He made a lot of terrible decisions.
Agree questionable. I am a saffa but question the yellow against Walsh left wing and the fassi's yellow.
At the end of the day a great win for the Boks and potm debut van der merwe.
@@annettekolb3103The yellow against the Welsh wing was for a cynical offside on the try line, easy yellow.
@jameswyatt4443 yeah but the ref was card happy today
@@annettekolb3103 How?
"Wales on rollerskates going backwards" Classic line. Patent that one, Tim!
Great channel mate. SAFFA from NZ here.
The best possible team doesn't necessarily mean the best possible players. Sometimes, it's more about the combination.
You will love SA Tim. The “gees” at matches is electrifying.
"Gees" translates to "spirit" like the good atmosphere, the good spirit amongst South African rugby folk.
Well done Bokke!
You did us proud. 💪🥇🇿🇦🏈
Jordan Hendrikse maybe the 5th best flyhalf in SA at the moment.
Wales is so tricky that you can't be forgotten even after they got wooden spoon in Six nations... I'm glad bokke got the stuff together. They enjoyed themselves...and that definitely Toni magic to show
Fassi was immense under the highball. And his coming into the providing the extra man on attack was impressive
Really enjoyed it, I was extremely excited for all the new guys to play, but also nervous… Wales always feel like a formidable opponent against us, you can never write them off… Great game, great opponents, great review
(Edit: Just remembered you said you are coming to South Africa, I am really excited for you and I hope you enjoy it, I know you will)
1st half was a DISASTER. Boks fast asleep. Rusty AF. Then Rassie yelled at them in the lockers and fantastic ending especially Sacha's 52m kick and Edwill's debut man of the match try.
SA scrums were EPIC. So good to see !!
Wales were better than anticipated. Still a lot needs to change for the Irish. But have faith in Rassie. But Masuku really needs a look in
Agree 100%
LOTS of people saying the same about Masuku.
@@EggchasersRugby been saying it since team was announced
Excellent summary and round up.
You are a legend Tim. Can't wait for you to visit us.
Congratulations on your 600th video.
I didn't even notice that. Thanks!
Love your channel and comments. Always so positive!
The most impressive bit is that you're the first non-South African that I heard, reporting on this game, that managed to pronounce Evan Roos' surname correctly! Such a short name but no one got it right!
How did you know?! 😂
Wales did brilliant in stages. They have huge potential. We South Africans gained respect for this young Wales side.
Aaron Wainright reminds me of Naas Botha. They look alike as well. Some great classics and debuts for the Bokke.
Check.
Fassi had a stellar performance 👌👌👌that yellow card he got was ridiculous 😂
Baie goeie bespreking ! Groete uit Lima Peru!
Excellent review Tim. ALL of you observations are spot on.
Always thought this game was a Springboks reserves trial, and some new guys really shone: Sacha and Edwill, especially. New combinations struggled to click, so the backline never sprang to life, unfortunately. On a side note, has there ever been an attractive Wales vs SA game? Ever?
That's a great question. Wales match up quite well against SA compared to how they usually go against NZ. They manage to make it ugly.
@@EggchasersRugby For all his kvetching about SA rugby, I believe Gatland has adopted a very similar game plan for years and that is why the games are always so ugly - like boxing in the mirror.
The pre WC game where we put 50 points on them was fun to watch as a Bok fan but, yeah, can't think of too many others
That's why we said, don't underestimate Wales. Because yes! They did play their harts out. Well done my Bok brothers💪🏼❤️
Can't wait to have you this side my guy. I love your channel. You going to enjoy craven week, these kids are on another level. Hope you have a great time in SA. I'm in Cape Town and will be watching the SA VS Ireland game from home enjoying a good old braai, beers and good company. Feel free to reach out if you need anything while you here. Cheers
Great podcast think you hit the nail on the head
U should come to cape town south africa....u wille enjoy it❤
Monday Morning in Cape Town.....Safe Travels Tim. Looking forward to seeing your Reviews of our beautiful country!
Awesome analysis again! Thanks for all your efforts!
Thank you. Great insight and analysis of the game. I appreciate your commentary
Fasi had a great game. Kudos for Wales. The gave the Boks a good run
Thanks for your Take on the game Tim
This was an amazing game. As a South African i didn't enjoy that the tri was awarded. It changed the Wales momentum. But you could say also about decisions made by ref in Wales' favour. Wales showed tenacity, discipline and how great control over their scrums and rucks. They do have a problem with guys being offside. But that can easily be fixed. South Africa just had the right guys in the right spots. Well done Wales and Great work Boks. So proud to be South African.
Could see bits of NZ influence in the tactics from the boks. Interesting to see how that develops overthe season
Brilliant orsome, game, from, strength to strength
Will be fascinating to watch the 10 (or backup 10). And elighted for EvdM!
Would have Siya as the backup to Manie, still behind Pollard though.
@@riaannel1884 Siya is cool but my betbis FM is the crown prince. Those kicks of his were long (Siya has a shorter range) and bulls eyes. FM is lauded as a great playmaker and a good defender. I have not seen that yet but if he is he will be the favourite.
Great review and spot on with all aspects
Good analysis, well done
This channel is my go to just because of how quickly you drop the videos.
Great analyses as usual, mate. Pop in for a pint when you get to South Africa!
It was a very frustrating game from a bok point of view! Way too many TMO interruptions. Ref totally inept at the scrum!!
Great to watch the boks again. SA looked rusty at first. But came through by the end quite nicely.
Fassi, E van der Merwe, Sashs FM was very impressive. Great future for these guys...
Best of luck on your trip. I hope Ireland do it We ve lost a bit of confidence with losing to England and Leinster and Munster been beaten but you have to keep on going. Great show Tim
Brilliant review as always, Tim. Agree 100% with all your takes. In fact, it felt as if you were reading my mind! Love the bits of humour thrown in, too. Have a wonderful time in beautiful SA and stay alert and safe. Pity it's winter atm, as it can be cold and wet, but the warmth of our people should blow you away. South Africans are a passionate bunch who love rugby (as if you don't know🤣), are vibrant, warm, colourful, soulful, resilient, and welcoming. I'm sure you'll feel the spirit and enjoy the hospitality and culture. Hope you'll be visiting my hometown, magnificent Cape Town (miss it so much!). There's so much to see and do in our amazing country (besides incredible rugby), so hope you get to experience all it has to offer... else you may need to return (several times!!). I consider you an honorary South African (sure many of your fans do) and just love the way you've embraced our outstanding rugby players, coaches, supporters and our nation. Look forward to hearing all your podcasts, and especially excited about the podcasts you'll be doing while in SA. Thanks for an excellent rugby channel. 🙏
Agree about Roos. Fassie yellow was accidental his leg knocked off balance by no.11. TMO over involved, and some strange decisions. Love the commentary, look forward to your take on the Irish series, and welcome to SA.
You sir, are spot on accurate in your assessment.
Brilliant channel, brilliant attention to detail.
Literally said everything a level headed rugby fan would say.
If you're in Cape Town, free accommodation at my place
Welshman here. Congrats to SA. I was fairly Content with this performance. Considering the side we had out, we were still in the game with 20 minutes to go. I never thought we were going to win but before the game I genuinely expected a much higher score line from the Saffas.
I’m
Not convinced by Winnet at all.
Videos always class mate. Discovered your videos last year before the world cup and always enjoy your insights. Looking forward to what you put out in South Africa 👌
With their obvious prowess in the scrum, adding that attacking game to the backline... yes please
Cameron Hanekom's performance against Leicester was phenomenal. I would choose him above Evan Roos.
Really enjoy your balanced analysis. Also like your old school attitude about the physical aspects of the game.
If possible, go make a turn at the Academy week at Jeppe High School in Johannesburg as well ( 24 to 28 June ) . Some international u18 teams such as Namibia and Zimbabwe is playing there together with the local regional teams as an alternative tournament to the Craven Week. Always good rugby there as well.
I thought it was a little sad walking through London, and I must have seen 50+ people with South African jerseys at least, they were everywhere. I saw 2 people wearing Welsh jerseys the whole time.
