SPOCK'S BEARD - Submerged (OFFICIAL VIDEO). Taken from the album "Brief Nocturnes And Dreamless Sleep". InsideOut Music 2013. Order "Brief Nocturnes And Dreamless Sleep": smarturl.it/spo...
Man, what an interesting mixture of comments on this song. Does it sound like old Spock's? Of course not! I didn't write this song for Spock's Beard. I wrote this song for myself... and, yes, the video has nothing to do with the lyrics. It's a song. It's not a remark on the ongoing direction of the band. There are plenty of moments on that album that hearken back to the old sound. I'm fully aware of the massive shoes I have to fill. I didn't even choose this song for the album, Alan did. I was just playing him some of my solo stuff and he wanted to do it. That said, I'm glad we did it and I will not apologize. People said the same thing about June and All on a Sunday. Selling out? Piss off! We collectively liked the song and so we recorded it. That's what the band is all about. Like it or not, I am part of this band. I'm the BIGGEST fan of its history, and I revel in its current form... and will forge ahead despite the naysayers.
Ted Leonard As a devout SB fanatic and Enchant fan I was thrilled to have Mr.Ted Leonard assume lead vocals. 'Submerged', 'Waiting for Me' and 'The Man You're Afraid You Are' are my faves but the whole album is great. I have a copy of the CD signed by the whole band!
Ted Leonard Honestly, as a fan of SB through their incarnations and a fan of Prog Rock since the late 70s (my first concert was the ELP orchestra tour for Works 1), I firmly believe that this version of Spock's Beard is the best. The sound is both mature and accessible. Your writing skills and vocals are just what the band needs. I can't wait to hear what you guys have in store for us. Please tour the east coast of the US when you hit the road again (MD/DC area).
Ted Leonard You really are an amazing addition to the band Ted! (Shout outs to Jimmy too! He's a great guy.) No one should be sad that the current Spock's is not the same as the Neal era, nor is it the same as the Nick era, but it IS _THE_ Spock's Beard. ;) Sure, the sound and even lyrics and composition might be different in some aspects, but it certainly is not the _bad_ different, it's a really good different! And there's still a lot of familiar elements in the music and the performance since most of the guys are the same. :D I'm so glad that Spock's has been able to invent itself again and again after many changes. There's so much life and creativity in you guys and you'll continue to make awesome music for years to come. :)
I'm curious. The footage of the band looks like it was shot at 24fps but the other parts look like it was shot at 30fps? Is this the case? Great job by the way.
Can you tell us what the video has to do with the song? Just curious as well! :) love to learn for the future when i make music videos myself how video representation works
3 actual, verbatim quotes from 3 women I know, summing up the video: 1. "It's strange" 2. "Hot people who like other hot people." 3. "The song is great, but, those alienated people."
It's a beautiful, fantastic song, regardless of who wrote it, new or old Spock's Beard, whatever. It's a damn good song and a damn good performance by a damn good band.
This one of the greatest “pop rock” songs of all time 🤘🤘💚 fantastic melodies, warm production, expressive vocals, and top notch musicianship and song craft. It’s not prog rock, but it doesn’t need to be. Phenomenal track, it’s timeless and will be loved forever
This is an amazing ballad, just like "Shining Star", and it's got a lot of the same elements that made the former song great. Absolutely perfect production, sublime and restrained playing all around, but with real power and heart. And Ted nails it.
I LOVE this song! It's great to see prog groups occasionally simplify the music so that lyrics as complicated and deep as these can shine through. Great work SB!!
Chris Chamberland, i directed this video and edited most of it. and, just so you know, you are completely right about the vignette mask disappearing at 2:06. in fact, my DP hated me for leaving it in lolol. she HATED it! and i could have gotten rid of it in a couple minutes, but i left it in because i thought it added an insanely subtle and nuanced wrinkle and i've been waiting months for someone to notice. listen and watch closely, chris, and you'll notice how it's actually edited to the music. so, honestly... thanks, bro. you rock.
I think you did a fantastic job on the video man! When I made the comment, it was just something I noted. I didn't mean any offense. What rig did you guys use for the shoot?
Chris Chamberland Hey Chris. Sorry, just seeing your response now. Thanks for the kind words. The rig was rather simple--my 60D, with a Nikkor 50M 1.8, Canon 85M 1.8 and a few other lenses, all of which are mine.
Hi Michael, one quick question about the actor in the video: Is that Louis C. Oberlander? If yes, he played the keyboards in the German band called Jeremy Days. They had a huge hit with Brandnew Toy in the eighties.
I love this band, every version gets better. The whole CD is good, it has all the familiar riffs that I expect from the Beard with fresh new vocals. It's hard to say that you can replace Neal and Nick but IMOHO Ted Leonard is a great fit and I love his sound. I have most of the catalog with the exception of the live stuff and DVD's and I will continue to follow this band. Keep rockin' Beard!
Big Spock's Beard fan here and I had to listen to this song over and over and over again for over an hour. Just awesome. I mean fricken awesome. I mean totally fircken awesome.
I'm fairly new to SB- have all the Neal albums and 'Feel Euphoria' and love them to pieces. Trying to catch up here and there on youtube and internet radio. This tune is cool and I like this singer, first time I've heard him. Alan Morse has become one of my all time favorite guitarists since I started listening to the Beard a few months ago.
❤ met the bassist at an art show!! Was the coolest dude ever we had a connection!! From art show and Inenkadadvida baby the show i saw as a young kid and hot yo plauy acoustic ill never forget u all thank u for boosting my career ❤
Nov 12, 2022 This is the first song I've heard from Spock's Beard and I liked it so much I played it twice. A former member of the band Dream Theater was reviewing this band, though I did not click on his video. I came here instead.
Evolution can be so enjoyable. Favorite song on the new Recording. GREAT JOB Guys!! Alan's playing and writing has never been better (and I am Old School Beard). Cheers
I love SB and Enchant. This song sold the record for me. This was just a set up for the rest of the album - more complexity and creativity. Can't wait for the next album! I already preordered my copy from Radiant Records.
Hey Bud! Been under a rock? No, just kidding! Nick is the drummer for the Cirque du Soleil show Totem. It's a traveling show and doesn't allow him the time. This was a fantastic opportunity for him and as much as we are sad he is gone, we still had to push forward. But there is much love and respect.
Long time listener I just can't believe how effing awesome this whole album is. If I was in the band I would be very proud of this release. Not a bad track on this one. Keep up the good work fellas.
I started listening to Spock's right before Neal left, so I sort of got used to the idea of a band that was changing. For a while I was really saddened by Neals decision, and then NDV left and I thought "Dammit...wtf is happening to my beloved spocks?"..But I gotta say this latest album was the best in years. And this song fits the band perfectly. Singer is awesome, drummer is awesome, everyone else is awesome as they always have been. So yeah. Ted Leonard should be damn proud of the work he's put in.
I can't get enough of this song. It has become a personal anthem related to a break up of my own. Kicks my ass! I also love how the SB production has totally incorporated (so to speak) the tune related to the original version. I think it fits perfectly into the SB library of masterpieces.
I love it. Gread progressive song. This song really touches me. It's pure emotion - transferred by a fantastic vocalist. Thank you Spocks Beard for this great song. Despite some other comments - I really love this song, this recording and video as it is pure emotion. Glad that there are still bands and musicians providing us with music like this.
all great bands progress and evolve, and it's wonderful to see spock's beard follow that path. yes, this song, and indeed, the entire album is different than those from the "morse" era, thank the gods. it's one of the many reasons these guys just become better and better. i'll pre-order the next one, just like i did the last.
Oh no way ! - I saw them support DT in 1999 - turned up halfway through their set ( don't do support acts ) and was blown away . As an aside - way back in the day - my bro put an advert in Kerrang mag about wanting to join a Rush / Queensryche type band and got a nice letter from Mike Portnoy ( he was doing mail outs ) along with a demo tape from his new band Majesty and a couple of stickers - my bro sold the tape on Ebay against my protestations
Back and forth, up and down I feel my way around Finding everything but you My view of you has grown soft Got grace but something’s lost It’s probably the truth I’m candy coated salt and I’m a dimming light My fuzzy logic is skewed confusing wrong with right Throw me a line I’m sinking down Submerging further, further from you But I’m doing fine making my way Further and further, further from you Black or white hard to tell Grey’s a much easier sell And you give it away for free So watered down homogenized That the truth becomes the lie That you’re starting to believe I’m candy coated salt, I find it bittersweet The lack of comfort, when not everybody agrees Chorus + Lead + first pre-chorus + Chorus (2x)

Well, I'm not an avid Spock's Beard follower but have 3 albums. All are different. All are good. I love this melodic rock tune. I don't care if it's prog rock or straight ahead melodic rock. It's a bloody good tune!! end of story.
This is a great song. It's fantastic to hear SBs doing really catchy pop songs in with the prog again. That's what was great about albums like V; you had At The End Of The Day alongside things like All On A Sunday. Ted is a fantastic addition to the band and I think they are stronger now than they've been in years.
Not all stuff is different like this. Just listen to their new album. Apart from this I'm happy they release new stuff anyway. If they would have split up after Neals departure a lot of good music wouldn't be released. And the concerts are extremely good ... ah, long live the beard!
This is a great tune and a great video. Admittedly I’m not a die hard Spock’s Ears fan, just recently got into the latest album “Noise Floor” after seeing a ton of Nick D’Virgilio clips on TH-cam.
I agree but I think the new guy wrote this one. What a great voice, interesting lines and harmonies. Great song, they got a new fan here. Just got the album....lovin these guys.
Wiele razy widziałem na żywo, to nie to samo co nagranie, szkoda tylko że Ted się trochę "dusi" w porównaniu do Nicka i Neala. U nich śpiewanie było "na luzie".
I vaguely recall being read these lyrics a long time ago, before they, well, never mind, a craxy time....great song, wish there more were like this...those closest to the heart are always best...always, the industry is full of convoluted, several egos playing at once, making a mess bc there's too many people trying to get their "say; this is raw and true...music needs more honesty of the heart....before we become a gimmick, a sound alike Kansas or anything else inauthentic....still waiting for a version of total eclipse...or anything true to the heart, no matter the pain, they always come out cleaner and more , much more authentic when they have to do with emotion and the experiences of the heart, when we are gone, what more matters and is not more important that that???
I know this comment is late. I know this has been out for years. And I know I am, on the whole, an 'old school' fan. I prefer the old sound. That said, this song -- which I just discovered, because it's slow at work -- is AMAZING. Well done, gentlemen.

NICE JOB
thanks for all the comments, folks. it was an absolute pleasure directing this band.
I love this song, especially Ted Leonard's vocal work. Man... how well he sings!

Alan Morse is a genius, all Spock's Beard Albums Rock
The song is amazing; both Beard and Enchant are amazing! Ted, this song is killer and anyone who says different is crazy!
God this is so 90s, Bad ass song right here
I LOVE this song! It's great to see prog groups occasionally simplify the music so that lyrics as complicated and deep as these can shine through. Great work SB!!

This may have become my favourite SB song.
Fantastic. My husband introduced me to this band just five minutes ago. Love this already
This was highly inspirational! I sat here listening writing lyrics, some of my best. No lifting from this tune, just drinking in the inspiration.
What a band, what a music and what a nice video! And only 84k views... It makes me sad.
I bought the album for this song but I've been too busy listening to Haken's "The Mountain" and The Flower Kings' "Desolation Rose".
This is one of my all time favorite Spock's Beard tunes.
Love it when SB shows a little tenderness and Ted knocked it out of the park on this one. Brilliant.
Jimmy is such an amazing drummer!
The last time I saw him, he played a drum fill that brought me to tears. I'd never heard anything like it, unreal
The drumming is Over the Top!
Ha! See what you did there?

Happy to find The Ol' Mighty Beard still strong and making good records after losing Neal and Nick
Ted Leonard is a BADASS vocalist. Such power! This is a great track.
4:28 This! Wow, the power and control.

Fantastic Song. Best Album Of 2013. Anyone Who Disagrees Is Automatically Wrong. For The Love Of Spock!
Such a good song with a really good video as well!! This video deserves more views.

This sounds like a hit 90's rock song in ALL the best ways
I discovered Spock's Beard a year ago. So glad that I did!
EXCELENT BAND !!!!!! I LOVE IT!!!!!!
Excellent song. Heard a brilliant version at their Nottingham gig this week. Nice one boys.
Dzięki za wspaniały koncert w Opolu!!!

I love you guys so freaking much.
I'm very happy I get to listen to this song all the time and not have to watch the music video
It's a great music from a great band.
Album (SPOCK'S BEARD Brief Nocturnes And Dreamless Sleep) in my collection, vid in my favs. Thanks.
This song truly benefits from Ted's amplitude. Like 'Bennett' gets value from Dave's measured delivery.
I have only one thing to say; It's wonderful
Great new song, great new album, great tour. Love u guys!
I can't wait to see you guys at Prog Power next year!!! I hope to have a beer with you guys at the Artmore!
SPOCKS BEARD - A new Era begins... Ted nailed this 'live' in London, what a great addition to the band he is, both as a songwriter and performer
Man, what a track. That was superb. Off for another few listens. Reckon it could be a new "driving song"......, bring on the speeding tickets!
Thanks for the great show last night in San Diego!
Submerged Is A Beautiful Great Rock Song And Fantastic Wonderful Masterpiece By SPOCK'S BEARD.
all great bands progress and evolve, and it's wonderful to see spock's beard follow that path. yes, this song, and indeed, the entire album is different than those from the "morse" era, thank the gods. it's one of the many reasons these guys just become better and better. i'll pre-order the next one, just like i did the last.
Saw The Beard open for DT in 1994....havent looked back since. Timeless stuff.
Oh no way ! - I saw them support DT in 1999 - turned up halfway through their set ( don't do support acts ) and was blown away . i am just learning about Spock's Beard, happy I found you! I really liked this song. (IMHO)
A real beautiful tune!
Love this. GREAT job on the vocals, Ted. Massive chorus - just HUGE. Melodic and at times heavy. Great stuff.
What a great friken song....
Rock on Ted.
Nicely done guys, the album itself is brilliant.
Great song. Great band
Damn good song, heard it for the first time a few weeks ago and needed to find out who sang it. Must listen to more their stuff.
Back and forth, up and down
I feel my way around
Finding everything but you
My view of you has grown soft
Got grace but something’s lost
It’s probably the truth
I’m candy coated salt and I’m a dimming light
My fuzzy logic is skewed confusing wrong with right
Throw me a line I’m sinking down
Submerging further, further from you
But I’m doing fine making my way
Further and further, further from you
Black or white hard to tell
Grey’s a much easier sell
And you give it away for free
So watered down homogenized
That the truth becomes the lie
That you’re starting to believe
I’m candy coated salt, I find it bittersweet
The lack of comfort, when not everybody agrees
Chorus + Lead + first pre-chorus + Chorus (2x)
My Buddies, Love this.
WHAT A VOICE!!! Love it, going to buy it NOW! DONE !
Actually one HELL of a song, being along-time SB fan a ballad like this is unexpected but wow, nice work guys
I think this is now my favorite Spock's Beard song ever.......not all masterpieces need to be progressive epucs!
or epics.
You're doing a fantastic job. As I seem to recall you delivered a masterful performance back in London with the guys on the Octane Tour.
Perfect Song - Thank you Ted!
It gets on my nerves how people like a band and then want them to stay frozen in time. Nought may endure but mutability folks. A worthwhile band changes. This is a good song.
This is a great song on an even greater album. It's in the natural progression of a band to vary their sound slightly, bands get boring and irrelevant otherwise. Ted Leonard did an amazing job on this song and album. Ted didn't fill any shoes (well yes he did), rather he bought some brand spanking new sparkly shoes that fit wonderfully.
This song has so many ear candy moments!!
The Submerged video was directed by Michael Beaudry and shot by Mariscela Mendez. Great job!
I Love this song! The new record is one of the best LP of this year :)
great video for a great song from great album
Not all stuff is different like this. Just listen to their new album. Apart from this I'm happy they release new stuff anyway. If they would have split up after Neals departure a lot of good music wouldn't be released. And the concerts are extremely good ... ah, long live the beard!
This is a great tune and a great video. Admittedly I’m not a die hard Spock’s Ears fan, just recently got into the latest album “Noise Floor” after seeing a ton of Nick D’Virgilio clips on TH-cam.
Beauty!!!! Great band!!!!
awesome song! amazing vocals!
cool song and the videos not too shabby.
I still can't believe they have a music video.....
Sounds like Sound of Contact. Interesting.
I don't know much about this band; looking forward to listening to more
Love this song so much
Love it Jimmy! That is you right on the drums? Love the song I am a fan!!!
Wow, very fresh stuff
Back to the 90's :D
I agree but I think the new guy wrote this one. What a great voice, interesting lines and harmonies. Great song, they got a new fan here. Just got the album....lovin these guys.
I'm loving this song
Such a great tune
absolutely love these guys, awesome band
Master piece!!
I know this comment is late. I know this has been out for years. And I know I am, on the whole, an 'old school' fan. I prefer the old sound.
That said, this song -- which I just discovered, because it's slow at work -- is AMAZING. Well done, gentlemen.
