Clearly the best post-Neal Album and worthy of being named among the biggest SB-Albums!!!! I've loved these guys from the very beginning and I think I will ever do so!
Totally LOVE this! Brand new discovery 4 me just now via a friend who passed this on to me. LOVE from a prog rock fan since the 70's! They DEF have their OWN sound, but...I also mean this as a huge compliment when I say that they bring Crack The Sky to mind, plus Gentle Giant during the acapella parts. This is FAB! Gotta catch them LIVE!
AWESOME song, and great video! Really hope this (and the first two "Thoughts" songs get played on the upcoming tour! That would be great! KEEP ON SPROCKING!!! -M.
Brief Nocturns is one of those endless rotaion records at my place. IMHO it is with this album that at last they gained back the same musical quality of the early stuff when Neal Morse was still in the band.
I think Spock's Beard is done recording new music (but never say never). However - check out Pattern-Seeking Animals is sort of the follow-on project and worth a listen
Afterthoughts is credited to Alan Morse, Neal Morse and Ted Leonard in the sleeve credits for Brief Nocturnes and Dreamless Sleep. Perhaps the sequence is indicative of percentage of contribution... or maybe it's just alphabetical order by first name. It would be shocking if Neal was the primary composer of Afterthoughts. Maybe Neal is included since the song is dirivative of Neal's preceding composition. Such is the result of brevity. It creates more questions than it answers, so we're left to decide whether to have thoughts or brain silence.
While I love every incarnation of Spock's and somewhat prefer Neal's compositions and musical quirks, I think the post-Neal lyrics are much better! And Ted brings even more maturity to the band along with his own style. Can't wait for The Oblivion Particle!
It's so cool that Neal was able to contribute to the writing on this album. This song is pure Neal in terms of composition, but they totally nailed it without him playing. Ted hits a home-run with the vocals.
I had just discovered the fact of this album, as I made the mistake - the gross error in judgment - in failing to follow more closely Spock's Beard news. I mean to correct this; I mean to go out and grab this album.
Wow! I've never seen a 'lyric video' before! It's quite amazing (besides the pumping boat with this every-pedophiles-dream inside...) At the end it even made me feel dizzy, I almost got sick ^^ I wish they would come up with something like this for every great song they do :)

Sounds like the days of old with a more updated vibe! Long live prog!
Reminds me of Gentle Giant with a touch of Crack the Sky. Fucking brilliant band!!
I'm late to this party (2024). Hope it's not over.

May I have more Jello please?
A bit of the song is similar to "Gibberish"
Why do I hear Gentle Giant? This is good Music
i like sb but this song is very much like gentle giants school days from the three friends album
here because of Deadwingdork
all is well in this song except the selected synths
did you invent the technique of nasal vocal with zero impact
no where as talented as Giant vocals no where near Dereks
