Walk or run right now and purchased this live set from the vaults. The Cedar Walton Trio consisting of all-time great musicians on their respective instruments- Mr. Sam Jones holding the bottom down on bass & Smiling Billy Higgins keeping the groove behind the drumkit. Mr. Walton, of course is one of the greatest to ever communicate via the 88s & one of our most gifted composers as well. I was blessed to able to tell CW how much his music has meant to me as on 2 occasions he was brought to town to play the local jazz festival- thanks to homeboy/fellow all-time great Mr. Ben Riley. The first time I saw him live he was waiting to go on next when the trio playing then onstage lead by the one & only Doug Carn- played CW's classic "Firm Roots"- with great lyrics written & sung by Mr. Carn. During our brief conversation, I'd mentioned that one of my many favorite songs of CW was " The Holy Land" and later on during their set- CW along with bassist David Williams & Mr. Riley - played that request of mine. On this recording at the famous Left Bank Jazz Society, this trio backs up one of the finest vocalists this country has/will ever produced. The great Etta Jones who- like Little Jimmy Scott- was singing soulful many years before it became a genre. Ms.Jones- like nearly every vocalists coming up from the 40s on up to the present - was influenced by the great Lady Day & I know whenever Ms. Jones sung in that behind the beat phrasing of hers- Billie Holiday was smiling on in approval. I remember listening to an interview with Ms. Jones by my man on the West Coast- Pete Falico- and he told her of a story he had heard: in a club one night from the stage - my lady of song- Carmen McRae told the audience from the stage that sitting in the audience was in the the form of Ms. Jones- "The Greatest Jazz Singer " & her good friend Sarah Vaughan was in the crowd that night too! Now on the radio interview, Ms. Jones just laughed modestly - but she didn't deny that indeed was a true story. I hope music lovers who haven't heard of Ms. Jones get this live recording & indeed all of her output and treat their ears to audio perfection.
Wonderful Etta Jones with the best rhythm section anybody could ask for. Thanks!
