A review of the High Grade Universal Century 1/144 Gouf Custom from the anime series Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team.

One of those HG's that I really do say is better than the MG. I was going to review the MG, but it would've been 10 minutes of bashing a dated kit, so would rather review a better kit based on the iconic Gouf Custom.
- Production notes for me to laugh at in 2 years -
- Originally, this had a plug (a thank you) for a company a buddy of mine worked at. He sent me some kits, so I gave him a shout out. Now the company is out of business though... Guess I'm bad luck lol
- Anyway, since I had to re-upload this, I'd figure I'd make some fixes. They include:
- An updated script with more focus on the comparing it to the MG ver. Figured this is more of an MG channel, so I should probably tie it back to that Master Grade if possible
- Completely newly recorded audio going off that new script. Still a little too many mouth sounds imo
- Tighter editing to match the new audio. Ended up ~3 minutes longer than the original. I honestly don't care about brevity anymore. It's too much effort and I enjoy rambling too much
- New footage for the MG to actually show the comparison. Shot with the Canon R5 while the original was on the Canon 6D. Also different lenses. So the footage doesn't match how I'd like. I really have to figure out color grading beyond Adobe Camera RAW
- Fine tuned the background music, mainly lowering it. As these reviews get longer, I've found the music can get more annoying
- Updated the color filter, just to get things up to par
And here's the (slightly abridged) production notes from the original version:
- This is a 'casual' review, so I didn't try to perfect anything, but long gaps between working gave me a lot of time to tweak and experiment things. Learned a lot, and hopefully the next review will be able to bring some of these changes to fruition.
- There were 2 major upgrades to this review, the lighting and the audio, but let's do a full run down
- Script - really simple. I do regret saying the waist ball joint was restricted, because it really isn't as bad now that I'm looking at the footage, but eh~ not the end of the world
- Speaking of footage though, I think it looks pretty solid here. I did some camera tests to see how low I could get the ISO, and what was the sharpest aperture for my lens, and I think it really helped
- My terrible Polaroid 350 LED finally gave it up. That light had been garbage since the day I spent $115 on it. What a terrible brand. Anyway, despite needing to slap it to make it stop flickering, it did last me about 2 years before it finally gave up after shooting the inner frame footage. So, I bought a new, albeit weaker LED to mount on my camera. Then, wouldn't you know it, the Polaroid began working, at least when plugged into a wall. So now I have 3 LED's and 2 lamps for this stuff....
- All the light has let me really mess with the ISO and aperture, which helped get this video looking better. Look up the exposure triangle if you want a run down on that. Basically, more light = more options
- Downside is my work station is CROWDED with stands and lights. I just can't get in there for good pictures. Might actually need to cut a light or two out...
- The articulation section was really hampered by the added light stands, so there's lots of blurry shots that I could've redone, but was getting too frustrated, so just gave up. I did manage to fix the set up slightly for the upcoming Gun-EZ review's articulation
- Please no one mention how the chest piece pops in and out between inner frame wide shots and close ups lol. I am not re-shooting that!
- The video footage was much darker than the still images, again because I was tweaking stuff, so I ended up applying color correction to each video clip, then had the over-arching adjustment layer be just a bump to contrast. It worked pretty well, but really cranked up the export time.
And that should about do it. This was just a weird review to make lol.

Needed to reupload this video, so figured I'd make some changes while I was at it.
It uses an updated script, completely new audio, tighter edits, a few new shots (specifically of the MG version), and then fine tuned the audio and color filters.

I just built this thing, and love it. Was very happy to see the color accuracy. Also, really like the sockets to hold up the arms. The gun/shield combo is huge, and itll definitely weigh down the arm eventually, so it was nice to see bandai thought of a way to keep it from happening.
I bought the Crimson Battlogue version during my reentry into the hobby and was pretty happy with it

I don't remember if I had seen the old version of this, but I enjoyed this version. You basically summed up þú experience with this HG. Impressive, but still would love an updated version, given the new engineering in the Zaku Revive from 2020. A new MG of the Zaku/Gouf would also be amazing!

I really appreciate the review. Always on the fence about this kit, because there is Gouf revive version with better articulation but this one wins in the accessories department.

It's surprising there isn't a Gouf Custom 2.0 MG kit yet. Still, the HG is nice, and good review of it
I have hope that we'll get a Real Grade version of this. It'd be especially interesting to see how they'd handle this type of MS without the pre-mold inner frame. It'd be a completely new design, ground up.
I'm starting to realize, I don't know if there's such a thing as dated articulation when it comes to 2007-2008 and beyond high grades, with kits from that era even having ABS knee, shoulder, and elbow joints. As long as I have a thigh swivel, I'm happy as a clam. The builds just get more solid the closer you get to 2007-2008, so I think I can deal with the reduced floppiness of not having an ab crunch. RGs are taking it to an absurd extreme with this point with hidden joints and hinges most builders don't even know is there after they've put it on their shelf.

If I recall, im.pretty sure it's meant to have a red eye, not pink.

i honestly dont know what it is, maybe i just took the right drugs or something but the mg zaku was my fave build so far after building unicorn and hi v ver ka, something about the big pieces and the new glass files i got probably helped. building the hoses with all the rings was something i looked forward to and enjoyed, just wish i could grip onto the rings to cut off the nubs

It is absolutely better than the MG in my opinion. Though neither has particularly great articulation. Though one signifficant porblem I had with it was the peg connecting the forearms/elbows to the upper arm were incredibly loose and would just fall off on their own. I ended up both topcoating and wrapping some masking tape around the pegs to make them stay in.
I'm incredibly indecisive. I don't want to buy a bunch of kits and end up with a giant backlog. After jumping between a few RGs and countless HG's, I think I've decided this will be my next. Sorry RG Crossbone, maybe next time.

Thanks. This is kind of a re-upload of an older video. I made a bunch of changes to it, like fixing some mistakes, re-recording all the audio and got some new footage of the MG version. But yeah, most of this is older footage. All new videos are gonna be on that set. Spent too much time organizing it to not use it lol

One thing that really confuses me when it comes to scale for models is what 1/100 means. When looking up the dimensions of the thing, I can never tell how tall it's actually going to come out to be. Can you tell me how tall this particular model is, please?

The HG Gouf Is a really Nice HG and a lot better than the MG.
The poor MG Is a victim of the Crazy Bandai strategy that has a Cool Zeonic 2.0 frame used for various variants of the Zaku II and Gouf but Zaku I and Gouf Custom that could benefit from the same frame for a 2.0 MG are still waiting.

Yeah, but I did take the time to make a couple of corrections, re-record all the audio and threw in some new footage. But yeah, if you've seen the original version, then you're probably not missing too much here lol

Considering the HGUC MS-07B-3 Gouf Custom is a 2010 release, and the MG MS-07B-3 Gouf Custom is a 2001 release, it's no surprise the HGUC version is better in a lot of ways.
I'm not really into UC but my favorite variant is the MS-07R-35 Gouf R35 from Gundam Build Fighters.
Anyway, I think it's long overdue for Bandai to do new MGs from the Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team series.
At the least Bandai should make:
