Longsword Unupgraded (Any Straight Sword Works)
Silver Eagle Shield Unupgraded (Find in Highwall)
10 endurance
14-18 Str and Dex (Used the souls making this to upgrade as I went so I could wear Lothric sword and shield for the end)
This knight is harder than the first three bosses.

really? then it will be a breeze to me then.. i only played DS1 and mastered it. i just fought this dude and his comrade with a spear killed them both pretty easily

the only real difficult thing about them is that it’s hard to tell when the party as well as the quick attacks they make
for me i just let him run up to me and then parry as soon as he winds up his attack i didnt know people were struggling with these guys

The first time I got rekt by a spear/shield knight, I lured him to a ladder and spammed firebombs out of sheer irritation.
I consider doing that but don't have confidence I could get away from the firebreath myself!

only problem i have with this video, it doesn't work as easily as you see here, it seems whenever i try this, they turn into their other attacks, like with the 2-hit combo, i will block the first attack and as i side-step to avoid the second attack, he turns as he's doing the second attack of the combo to hit me anyway, the AI tracing in this game is brutal
Sidestep the THIRD hit. Not the second. The THIRD hit is the linear attack that doesn't track.
no i mean with the Greatshield Knights, the sword ones i don't have much trouble with, but the lance ones, i will block the first hit and sidestep the second just like you show in the video, and he still traces me
Right, I know what you mean. You actually need to time that second hit, or they will turn around like you say. They can also cancel the second hit into a shield bash. I'm not just holding sideways for that attack, I'm actually waiting a bit longer to make sure he's doing the move I want him to do. Then I press sideways. You need to wait until they're in the start up of the second stab. Think of it as "baiting" that second stab. Because the stab is linear, its easier to sidestep it later in the animation, after they are committed. They're not as easy as the sword knights, you don't really have to time those guys. I wasn't very good at video editing (who am I kidding, I'm still not very good) when I made that video. And it's difficult to explain everything in a single video, so I was relying on people asking questions. Sorry if that's confusing, I'm not really one of those big name dudes. I just wanted people to have some idea of how to approach these guys, since they're such a pain, and threw something up there. I had no idea it would get this many views, most of my videos are lucky to break 100.
The spear + greatshield ones have a solid defence and will try to prevent you from going behind them with a shield bash. Kicking their shield down and going in for a riposte usually works wonders.
Morninglord22 im have a keyboard and i dont know how to circle around an enemy, is it a control or do you just do it with the Mouse?
My shield is useless against these guys they just chop right through it. What's the point of having it if it doesn't stop attacks.
Make sure you have 10 endurance and get the shield in highwall in the description (look it up). If you aren't using the same shield and stats, of course you will have a different experience. The strategy is for a shield anyone can get and an endurance level that is easy to achieve.
Morninglord22 My shield works now but how do I get behind them? So far I've had to kill them from the front which ends up costing me lots of health. As I try and flank them they just turn with me and are always facing me. Thanks for the response.
You have to time your sidestep for when they do a move that makes them travel forwards or stab straight forwards. Back away from them a bit so they don't shield bash you, and wait for them to do a combo. Make sure you are locked on, then block all the hits up until the stab forwards without moving. Once they START doing the move that stabs forwards or makes them lunge forwards, THEN press and hold the stick right or left. It's timed.
he never hits me like that he fucking bashes me with his shield and then combos my ass till im dead
+Cody thats why you wait for the combo before you strafe. if you strafe too early they have a reaction attack, coded for when you strafe too early. to avoid the big shield bash, you stay at range to make them come in on you. don't stay too close, don't try to constantly strafe right at all times. that will get you killed. you have to wait until you see the right combo.

To avoid sidestepping too early, making them bash with their shield, you can go away from him, so he will run at you and lunge (only the ones with a sword), at that time you strafe at his right and backstab him.

Hey man i have a question, how did you put away your shield and went into dual hand mode so quickly?
If you mean those lunges, they're not dual hand mode. This shield lets you use weapon arts whenever you like instead in return for being unable to parry. That's why I suggested it, as its a pretty nice early game shield since you can bust out the weapon art attacks without dropping your block.

I don't have to swap. This shield lets you use weapon arts. Unless you meant at the end. Yeah you are meant to two hand your weapon a lot.
@@Morninglord22 oh I assumed it was a parry shield. The swap looked super smooth. Really useful considering how awful and slow the input for kick is. Their shield bash always beats my kick.
Oh that's probably why I've been unable to kill them. Using the uchigatana two handed (since I'm to weak to use it in one hand,) and I therefor don't use a shield.
wait strong 14 and dex 18 or between there
variable. start at 14 each, started adding to both as I went along. even if you dont have those stats tho it wont matter, itll just take another hit.
personally i find it easiest to just wait for them to drop their shields and in that moment just go full assault. as long as you've been upgrading your weapon as you go, this usually does the trick for me.

I got the game yesterday, it harpens to be my first Souls Game. I did all right until I reached the first Lothric Knight, but I am having some trouble with it, I guess I just "get gud"

What is that 2h attack you're doing that breaks their shield? Does battle axe have a similar move? I've tried some 2h attacks with it and not had luck yet.
It's the weapon art. You hold the weapon art button down while two handing a long sword and you enter a special stance. In this stance R1 and R2 do special attacks. R1 does massive stamina damage to shields, and against most shield enemies in the game will break open their defense.
Firebombs come in clutch if you can find em

every blocked hit takes 80% on my stamina and staggers me
I need to know what move they are using. I recommend upping your stamina though.

Dude you are clearly high level, this is not useful. Of course you're staggering them, and not being staggered by their hits.
This was a new character recently made, hadn't killed the bosses past these enemies. You are confused about how the games mechanics work.
How do I do that "break the shield" move you did ?
It's the weapon art. You two hand the weapon (or have a shield that
allows weapon arts) and you hold L2 then press R1. You need FP (the blue
bar). (edit: Fixed typo, I originally said R2)
You can also kick them but the weapon art is faster, easier to do, has greater range, and does damage.
I didn't realise my typo when I first posted this, but I meant you press R1 not R2. R2 is a lunge attack. You want to hold L2 and press R1 to do the special shield break move. That's an embarrassing typo. I'll edit my other comment.

Yes because you can do this as soon as you reach them the first time. This is for people who don't want to rely on or don't currently have those upgrades.

Ok, I gave this about 25 hours over 3 days just engaging the same knight over and over agin trying to learn this thing and get a few backstabs. It never happened. Not once. No matter what, he’s tracking all side steps, runs, rolls, jumps whatever. Also during his linear attacks. I guess they patched it 🤷🏻 too bad.

Ok I see this is how you do it with a shield equipped. But im curious how you deal with these type of enemies (shielded knight like almost all of them) without a shield like with a 2h. I really dont like being reliant on a shield and prefer rolling around instead since that is more useful in general (in my opinion). But everytime I try to roll around him he hits me in a 90 degree angle on his back with his sword. I dont know how but somehow they follow my dodge animation around and hit me on a prev delayed frame or something. I really wanna get better understanding of the game so if someone could answer would be nice. Im only like 20 hours into the game so any help is appricated... ty!

I had to lure the first knight into the dragon fire, then get the bon fire on the tower.
Im gonna practice with the knight thats leaving the room, and see how many times i die before getting this down.
Does it matter what weapons im using? Im Herald with spear.
Ok after 30 or so death later. I found an issue with this, the sword knight has a habit of shield bashing you if you block and try to circle him, one bash will use 90% of you stamina and im staggered, so I cant block or counter attack, thats when I eat a 2 hit or 3 hit combo.
Im at the part where i just killed Vordt, but I still have not found everything on the high wall. so im looking to farm that area a bit.

It's just holding left and right while locked on. It's not a special technique. They're just easy to circle around mid combo. I didn't expect people to read side step as a special technique.
Morninglord22 I've been trying that but in the video you do it so much faster than I can. I block the first few hits and then when he pauses for the last hit in his combo I circle around to backstab him. Whenever my shield is up, I can't do this fast enough and he always turns to hit me no matter what.

It's a timing thing. But you can start pressing in the direction you want to go as he is hitting your shield with the second hit and your character will strafe as soon as they can. You don't have to wait until after he hits you, you can just hold right.
Also, what shield are you using, because I'm showing this with a specific shield and weapon, and different shields can have different effects.
If your equip weight is too high, you move slower, which can also effect it.
I understand your confusion, but I'm not really doing anything particularly special. I'm just holding up and to the right as he hits the shield.

Another trick is to hold up and right, instead of just right. It will let you circle them a little tighter, making them less likely to track you because you are moving around them with a smaller orbit, hence faster. Your reaction speed can be a bit slower then.
But if they don't do the third hit (its extremely rare that this happens, but it can), you have to get ready to dodge, because they will try to shield bash you. Just be prepared for that.
How do you do this side step after block? is there any special or only stop blocking and move around the knight?
+MJ Vamp you dont have to stop blocking. you just hold to the side on the left stick. or move left/right on pc on keyboard, whatever that is. while locked on.
They killed me for more then ten times, each one. I can’t do the side step thing ,but instead I learned which strikes my shield can take and deal with them face to face, great fights, problem solved, everyone happy
oh man thanks so much. I have gotten far enough to just over power them with front slash attacks and they die before I lose endurance. I'm outside the church now and the Lothric knight with a halberd destroyed me. Going to try some of these.

+reddevilkev Red cape is Lothric Knight Armor, which drops from these guys. It's very heavy!
Controls for shield attack with a long sword is L2-> R1. (Weapon art button then Light attack button). I don't know the controls for PC off the top of my head, sorry.

+Alix Bull They're called backstabs and riposte. Special attacks that happen when you press R1 when directly behind an enemy or when its in the arms flailing animation. Look up a video on how to backstab and riposte, it will explain it all.

this is really helpful, but i recommend waiting for the combo, then parrying his second attack

oh shit we got a badass over here. i wanted it to be as simple as possible. telling people to dodge attacks is more complicated.
in my game after blocking the first 2 attacks i need too much time to move because i am stuck in an animation i simply can't perform this tactic
+Thunder Zephyr are you using the shield i said to use? hes probably breaking your guard. I have deprived starting end and a shield you can pick up in this level. Make sure you have at least 10 end and that shield. Go find it, its somewhere in that level.
I have the same problem. He doesn't break my guard, my character stops when he blocks the attack. When I side step I'm not moving enough to get behind him before he starts another attack or shield bashes after the 3rd strike.
