- Early summer lawn care has included some cool weather where I'm at and I'm loving it so I decided to lay down some lawn stripes with both my Toro Timemaster and the Swardman Electra reel mower. The timemaster does a great job of striping but this time I used the toro striping kit to add a little more definition and it does a very good job with lawn striping.

That looks great Ryan. We've had a lot of rain up here in Worcester, MA but then it got real hot and dry. Weird weather. Tough on my lawn this year, I just saw a whole bunch of mushrooms and other weeds have been present. Fighting the good fight.

Gosh, Jun 23, 2019 Striping overhead of your lawn looks stunningly awesome. Had tall fescue sod installed last Nov. Hope to get mine looking similarly attractive before long, though I prefer trying to grow my lawn grass to the upper limit of my Honda mower. Kudos.

Hey Ryan, your lawn looks awesome. I have KBG and am mowing at 3.5in I have a wooden fence around my backyard and the sun reflects off of the fence and browns my lawn is there anything I could do to prevent this?

I just switched from the Toro striping kit to the Big League Lawn on my timemaster. Better stripes and less clunky. Worthwhile upgrade.

Check ebay for the hat! I found a replacement of a hat I had lost plowing a field. Never quite got attached to the replacement like I did the original.

I worked for Dave Mellor when he was the assistant in Milwaukee during the 90s and early 2000s. If we weren’t putting a new pattern in we would mow everyday following the curvature of the infield skin and then re-roll the existing pattern without cutting. Another secret is using fresh grass clippings to cover up worn out areas (usually where the outfielders stand and in front of the mound). On TV you can’t tell they are clippings. Thanks for your vids.
Thanks for sharing! I have been talking with Dave a bit and hope to meet him yet this year. Were you just using reel mowers or some rotary? I know they are using a Bobcat rotary now part of the time at Fenway.

Another little known fact. 20 years ago before the running sausages became famous, the races were run by the ground crew members. The pay was bad, but we had some fun getting paid to watch baseball. Ask Dave about the day the field flooded because the city sewer system backed up and came back through the drains in the warning track. The infield was the only part of the field not under water because the field had such a crown. The Brewers played the next day. Once the water receded they even had a helicopter hover over the outfield to dry out the turf. Good times.

Hey Ryan, I know you have the 10 and the 6 reel. Planning on getting the swardman soon, and i'm trying to decide. I do mow 2-3 times a week. Can i get the same results with the 6 blade that i can get with a 10 at 5/8s of an inch?
I would get the 6 but at 5/8" you will for sure need to mow every other day, sometimes every day in the prime time season
Ryan is your front yard the SS1100/SS9000 50/50 Rye & Bluegrass mix from Seed Superstore? I'm considering following your videos and killing and starting over. Just want to make sure of the seed you used because your front yard looks awesome. I'm also considering purchasing a Swardman reel mower next year.
Front is more SS9000 and a little of my old sod mixed in that didn't get suffocated when I leveled it heavily...that side yard is the 50/50 mix. If my SS9000 continues to look as good as it does or returns ok after our hottest 2 months coming up...I would choose that over the mix but we shall see. There is nothing wrong with the mix at all if you go that route, it's just personal preference on the look of rye by itself.
Ryan, I have heard it said that more frequent mowing (2x a week) actually helps your lawn by promoting growth. What are your thoughts on this?
Yep the more mowing (done properly with sharp blades) will help to thicken the grass
You try using the Swardman to roll your backyard too without cutting? Could probably crank up the speed too to get it done quicker.

You are killing it! I took a screenshot of stripes and sent my friend! Ok so the striping kit is 21” what size is your swardman? Also if you had the chance do you prefer your swardman or toro?
The toro is 30 inch and striping kit the same size for that one. I love reel mowing and would prefer to do that all the time but my backyard is bumpy and would need a lot of leveling work to make it happen.
Hey Ryan, I had a question in regards to watering after a period of getting a lot of rain. Last week we were hit with over 5 inches of rain. In cases like this do you back off watering for at least the next week?
Just watch the grass and it should tell you...depending on temps it might not store up as much water as you would think it does.
What's the brand and size of that hat? I like searching for odd items.
Turf is looking fantastic! I can’t deal with nutsedge and I definitely see it breaking through. What’s your remedy to slow it down? As for the kbg, what is the darkest midnight or blueberry?

Sedgehammer is what I use...for bluegrass I think I'd probably go midnight but this fall I'm going to test 3 kinds so stay tuned.

Ryan what is the darkest Bluegrass you can get and where can you get it from?
I'll be testing 3 different types this fall. A go to is usually midnight but I'll be testing a couple others and using seed from Seed Super Store online

I see you are still using that old gas blower, You should get Milwaukee to send you the electric blower to go along with your edger. I never thought I'd like an electric blower, but after needing a new battery for my Ryobi Expand-it, It was only $5.00 more to get the blower with a 40v 4.0 AH battery and charger vs just getting a battery ??, So I got the blower. I use that thing almost daily, It's perfect for cleaning up after a mow.
For now I like the gas one but someday if it dies I'll look at a battery powered one

Are you using fungicides with your lawn? I always get nervous with plant growth regulators when it comes to fungus.
I have been, yes. Azoxy and Propiconaozle at preventative rates. I will need to switch to something else coming up but haven't decided yet
