    Fun Fact:
"I took an arrow to the knee" is an old phrase used by the Vikings for getting married. This is why men get down on one knee to propose.
An arrow to the knee during war was a serious injury which would end the man's 'adventurous journey' of exploring new lands. The same principle was applied when a person would get married.
"I used to be an adventurer like you...then I took an arrow in the knee."
"I used to be an adventurer like you...then I got married."

Even though the history is obviously depressing, the meaning of a diamond ring has changed a lot. I don't think we should still judge it from that perspective anymore. Before this video, I didn't even know what it used to mean in the past. I'm sure many others don't know this too. And they just go for the diamond for aesthetic reason or materialistic reason or something similar.
And if we are to judge something because of it's bad history or origin, I'm sure there are more important things than diamonds to worry about.
And if you're truly concerned about child labor, just buy a lab grown one, that's a little cheaper as well.

Someone in the comments mentioned that we must move on from diamonds' unethical, business gimmicky past. I agree! I think diamond engagement rings are such a huge part of modern world that it's almost tough to imagine an engagement without a ring and for our generation, it mostly signifies a diamond ring. Thank you, movies! I remember when my fiance and I were talking about marriage, he'd already asked me about the kind of thing I'm looking for. I said anything would be fine and he protested that people would judge judge his love for me and his financial capacity by the ring. As off-putting that might seem, it is true to this day!

But you could say that about many things. Designer stuff, watches, cars, jewelry, travel, even food. In some places it’ll be $12,000 in other places you’ll find the same thing for $12. But it still doesn’t stop people from buying the ‘real’ stuff. Can you honestly say everything in your house was all bargains?

Nose ring also has this kind of meaning, as lagam was tied to horse to have control over them, married women were required to have nose ring before marriage , showing he should have control over her n considered as property!! This was kinda disturbing when I first came to know about it
    Diamond ring has similar mindset!!
My great grandma just keeps on forcing me to get nose pierced , I m 17, n sometimes even insults me whenever I refuse, the reason I don't want is simply coz I don't like it, considering not fashionable today, that's what I think, but most Indian women don't event know what they have been symbolising, even its lesser these days, this "control" still exits!!

apart from the fact that diamond rings come with a plethora of issues related to social status and financial affordability, the more important thing to acknowledge is that they aren’t as rare as they’re marketed and more likely than not, little children in african countries are being exploited to harvest them. that alone should be reason enough to stop buying them.

Great video - although I am miffed that you didn't use: "majnu mere yaar, yeh laila hain taiyaar, ho zaldi se leke aaja ek diamond ki ring!" from dil ka telephone song (from Ayushman khurana's Dreamgirl).
Also, that line from Kareena Kapoor in Heroine - "Diamond khareed liya toh engagement ho gayi" . As more and more women are getting financial independence, and increasingly earning more, they are more capable of buying their own jewellery as well as other expensive items (e.g. designer clothes, cars, putting the deposit for their own house etc.) and that is not just down to your urban professional woman. Even your middle-income woman, working a mid-level job now aspires to be a home owner. The mother who works when her kids are at school, bought the microwave she dreamt of (Shireen from Lipstick under my burkha). Even our bartan-chouka wali chachi got that gold nosepin she had her eyes on, saving her wages.

You are right. I also read somewhere that diamond is not actually that costly and is not good for long term investment like gold. It has been made costly because of monopoly of few companies who control and limit its production. Some cost are added due to its processing. It's all about marketing.

In India much more than diamond ring gold rings are famous and widely used for engagement ceremonies...

  • @TrendzCreations
    @TrendzCreations 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

But in most of the Hindu engagements, the couple exchanges rings, not only the girl gets it. And sometimes (if their family is modern enough) they purchase the rings together. And is generally a gold ring with or without diamond.

I love diamonds and I have bought them a lot on my own.. but it’s stupid to attach ur spousal relation with it . If u love ur hubby it doesn’t matter if it’s diamond or silver ring. At end of the day ur relation and understanding matters and not people who will judge u with the size of diamond karat.

About the diamond ring providing financial security for the woman in case the engagement was broken, I am confused. Isn't the woman supposed to return the ring if the engagement is broken? Or is that the modern concept?

Hey swaddle!! I find your videos really good and knowledgeable. You are doing a really good work. But i think you can do even better in you start a seperate hindi channel also for the hindi speaking audience. The people who speak and understand hindi are much more then english speakers in India and to get a reach in the rural north India it would be a really good idea as this region is kind of orthodox and likes women as 'sati savitri' !

Diamonds might have had regressive past. But today it's mostly about personal choice. If someone likes a shiny stone and has the money to buy it, he/she might as well buy it without trying to find some deeper meaning into it.
