In fact, they don’t know much, which just highlights their ignorance. Before I went to study in the UK, I had no concept of a British accent. It was only after I went there that I realized what it meant to not understand anything. Haha 😄 haha. Also, it’s interesting to note that only the southern part of London speaks Received Pronunciation (RP), often considered the ‘standard’ British accent. The rest of England has a variety of regional accents, and there’s no single ‘standard’ English accent across the country. Personally, I find the Yorkshire accent particularly challenging.
Good day, Mr. Lindsay. this episode is really supporting and thought provoking. I used to study an European language in the university in Taiwan and have always had passion for (learning) languages. I did/ do enjoy an atmosphere around people of different backgrounds/ cultures, although it’s not easy to have it for my current job has almost nothing to do with languages. I am not really a perfectionist but trying to speak a language with a clear articulation. I do agree with your opinions, that we as non native speakers have to some degree more or less “accents” when speaking a foreign language. So I will try to keep positive and learning. Thanks for your explanation and advice of the meaning of learning a language. Am looking forward to next episodes! 😊
Yes. Usually when you go to a different area, you'll have to adapt to the local accent. That certainly takes more effort. I find exactly the same thing happening to me when I travel around Taiwan.
Yes, correct pronunciation is very important. I always look up the IPA when I come across new vocabulary to make sure I pronounce it correctly. This is a respect to the language I am using.
If I were to migrate to Australia, I would make an effort to speak with an Australian accent. Do what the Romans do would allow me to forge relationship with the people there.

If we speak in a sincere and humble tone, the listener would excuse our heavy accent. However, if we are arrogant and conceited in manners, the listener will probably find us annoying regardless of how beautiful our accent is.

It's not just the UK, either. I can't think of a single country where the pronunciation is uniform across regions.

還有聽力也很累，很多發音都不同，連讀音，對於不是在國外生活過，常聽不同發音，所以會反應比較快。否則都會思考，比較多時間想一下意思，這在溝通過程會反應比較慢。
