    I'm a german and I living Dresden\Saxony. Currently I learn english for my job here. It's nice to hear your meaning about our country. I think many people can't see our values like healthcare, security without weapons, puplic transportation and so on. That's too bad. Thank you for open our eyes. Have a good time in good old germany! 😉

    Really great video👍🏻 I love that you’re living in Saxony, because most of the American expats living in Germany do so in the South (Bavaria, Black Forest). If they are also TH-camrs, they are kind of feeding the German stereotypes. That’s really sad, because Germany has so much to offer, and each area can be so different. If you got enough time to travel, try to go to as much different “Bundesländer” as possible 💜

    I like your observations and your attitude, you really deserve being a part in the CBYX program! BTW: if you take a look at a German ID (Personalausweis) or Passport, you'll never find "race/ethnicity" in it.

    I love it so much that you enjoy so many things here.
    Yeah we always complain about our public transportation - we all make fun of the Deutsche Bahn, but deep down we now its great that you can basically get anywhere you want
    I also love that you mentioned the part about acknowledging the history. When I was in my 12th grade we went to Berlin for five days and we went to the Memorial for Murdered Jews. And that really killed me. There were those 'payphone' like things, you could pick them up and you would hear bombs, cries, and all that stuff from different concentration camps. In my school we learned about WW2 at least four times between 5th and 13th grade. We never sugarcoated anything, we were confronted with the reality. I personally also work with elderly people and the amount of people living who still remember that time is just terrifying. I got to know this one old man, who would cry when you wanted him to shower. Afraid of the gas chambers in concentration camps. Its still a big topic and I have noticed that a lot of tourists are confused when you are told you are not allowed to use the typical salut from back in the day, or say special terms and stuff. I feel that a lot of people are afraid that once the generation dies, which lived during that time, that people will forget about those times. And I feel like that is the reason there is so much emphasis on it. Never forget.

    • @julsjourneys
      @julsjourneys  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      oh wow, i was just in Berlin; next time i need to take the opportunity to go there. in the US, we also learn about WW2 and the Holocaust multiple times, and they do explain how bad all of it was. however, with our own history they act different. at least most of the time (some teachers are good). i hope people don't forget once the older generation dies, but with all of the steps Germany has taken i don't think anyone will forget.

    Very interesting. In my opinion, you are the first expat who has highlighted the subject of "Acknowledgment of History" as a positive aspect. Did Germany do that voluntarily? Meanwhile yes, since the political elite definitely want to prevent history from repeating itself. Fifty years ago things looked a little different, as many of the followers and perpetrators from the war were still alive and basically didn't want to know anything more about the subject.

    I haven't watched all of your videos yet. How big is the city you went to as an exchange student?
    I know several areas in Germany and I have to say that public transport varies extremely. In some areas there are only school buses or almost unaffordable single trips.
    I Germany, local public transport is also subsidized by the state, I don't think that's usually the case in the USA, isn't it?
    Compared to the USA, Germany is very densely populated.
    ( USA 34 people per km² Germany 236 people per km² )
    That's closer than if the entire US were populated like Connecticut (252 people per km² ) or Massachusetts (255 people per km² ).

    School children do not necessarily have to go to concentration camps (unfortunately). This differs from state to state and then from teacher to teacher here in Germany. For example, I was visiting a concentration camp monument for the first time when I was a conscript of the german Army (Bundeswehr). But in fact, it also varies greatly there, depending on where you did the basic training.

    If we want to save climate, one important action (among many other) will be to expand public transport in many countrys of the world to reduce individual traffic. Every day millions of people commute to their jobs in their own cars and in every car just a single person. This is such an immense waste of energy (gas)...

    Stumbled upon your videos by accidents. In general, as you grow up further, you'll realize that certain things between the US and Germany (and Europe at large) are just...different. Some things are better, some things worse and some things are just....different, neither good or bad. It's popular nowadays on both sides of the ocean to follow opinions without specifically knowing why things are the way they are. I'm glad you get to experience a different way of life and can compare a little.
    About some of your points (sorry for the large comment lol)
    1. Yes, public transportation is very standard and advanced in Germany (Europe in general is above average compared to the world) although it does still have its caveats. The US was and still is horrific in that aspect although it used to have a bit more of that stuff in the early days like streetcars were actually a thing in a lot of US cities. But due to different development paths, the US and Germany are now very far away from each other in terms of public transportation.
    2. Universal healthcare. I know political debates do get down to teenagers but most know very little about details. You have very little experience dealing with your own health insurance in either Germany or the US as you are underage still and are always covered in some shape or form. The US system famously has tons of rather large holes but you probably never have encountered them before. My suggestion would be to actually refrain from commenting on this until you actually have to deal with it yourself when you enter into the world of work.
    3. The different treatments of history teaching, the US is in the priviledged position to teach history from a point of victory and success. This is why the attitude towards negative things in its own backyard has always been very iffy. The US likes to gloss over the dark spots a lot. But the US is by no means the only country that fluffs up its own history. In fact, I would say the majory of countries in the world are a bit less detailed about the negative aspects of their own history. You know the famous saying 'History is written from the perspective of the victors, not the losers'? Yeah this applies here. A more interesting comparison actually is between history teaching in Germany vs Japan since both were on the losing side in the last big war. Because the way they teach history in these two countries is very different despite both being losers.
    4. Diversity: This is actually a good point. Germany (and Europe) has its own take on the topic. Coming from the US you might only know one type of diversity that is specifically US flavored but internationally, diversity is not the same everywhere and there are different things that people understand under the term diverse. The term 'race' specifically is ingrained into the modern English language, like people in the US use it so casually like it is a natural thing to talk about race and in censuses and in politics. But in German, 'race' as a word has been largely absent since the Holocaust because the word is poisoned now when it comes to humans. The meaning of 'race' in German is now specifically associated with 'biologal race' only, there is no 'social race' concept in the word 'race'. Thus there is only 1 human race biologically. That is a medical fact. Instead, German speakers refer to 'ethnicities' and 'nationalities'. No 'biracial' couples, only 'bi-national' or 'bi-cultural' couples.
    5. Directness is a thing in continental Europe, although in Germany specifically, some Germans forget that 'rudeness' and 'directness' are still two different concepts. Don't be surprised to encounter the occasional rude person masking it off as 'directness'
    6. Tuition fees for college. This is a thing in general in the English-speaking world: Private colleges dominate in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand (although the US really does stand out in that aspect because the amount is rather shocking). Elitism and exclusivity is a big thing in that circle, everyone wants to be elite and nobody sees that as strange. Most universities in Germany are public and cheap, your grades the only major hurdle. Education in that sector tries to be a lot more egalitarian. But of course that also means the 'elitism' shine is not really there, the ammenities in colleges are also not the same. It's literally just a bunch of buildings to study and get a degree; no more, no less. US colleges sometimes resemble micro-cities with their own sports teams, facilities that look like those of major corporations, student dorms and so on. And that luxury costs money.

      @julsjourneys  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      thank you for your intake, this was nice to read 😊there are so many different aspects i've noticed so far and i think it's really fun to live in a different way
      however i will say that i'm actually not underage (i know i look younger haha); and my family has had to deal with a lot of problems regarding the American health care system, but i just didn't have to pay anything myself. so that's also why i really love the healthcare in Germany. but yes i definitely don't want to comment on anything i don't know about, which is why i stuck to talking about my feelings and not the logistics :)

    Well, of course there ARE also human Races.... (not only Pet Races). But the important Thing is: Does that really matter for the "Worth" of anybody ? The only real Difference it makes, is mabye just, that SOME People can be harder seen at Night,... SOME can be seen harder in Snow. 8-P Haha.

    slavery is not the only "bad thing" that happened in the US. What about all the native people who died when the USA was build? This is what history calls "Genocide". But nobody in the US is seeing it that way. Only Native Americans who have just a few miles country left here and there. Germany was bad, but did never reached this kind of madness.

    Chatters about slavery but the Indian story forgets it! Much worse than a people, no, destroying a nation is not possible, right?

    The right to education is a human right. Article 26 of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights states: "Everyone has the right to education. Education shall be free of charge, at least primary and basic education.
    Unfortunately, the U.S. does not adhere to this. They have implemented an unfair education system that favors the rich and disadvantages the poor. The USA is all about the money elite.
    The U.S. education system is like a pyramid, where children of poorer families struggle on the first rung, while wealthy parents build their offspring a staircase of money to the top.
    Criticism of this system is very restrained, because Americans are - and unfortunately not in education - trapped in selfishness; after all, everyone is the architect of his own fortune.
    Unfortunately, when capitalism is taken to its highest level, this is what happens.

      probably because teaching and memorializing slavery and Black history is under attack right now, with right-wing politicians railing against “Critical Race Theory.” (They don’t know or care what that means; to them it means “saying critical things about racism, and we can’t have that!”

    There are no human races. It is a very outdated concept to subdivide humanity like dogs. And a very unscientific one. So if somebody would ask me for my race, I would answer that I am not so familiar with motor sports.
    When it comes to ethnicities, their influence on people is a lot smaller than the social background. And social inequality is one of major problems that has to be taken care of.
