“I didn’t want to prove him wrong, I just wanted to make him proud”…as a father that quote goes a long way. Much props to his parents for their service and raising such a solid human.
Matt is always the sweetest, kindest person, hard to believe that’s the same guy who writes and sings about mutilation, pyromania, hell and the devil, etc.
Man just saw Alkaline 3 a couple of days ago, and they were fantastic. Matt and also Dan, but mostly Matt i think, was so taken by the whole thing. They've been on tour with this new album for a little bit already, but it somehow felt like it was his first time. He was genuinely grateful for everyone there, listening, singing, jumping around, and generally being there for them and their songs.
Matt is definitely a huge reason why they got a Grammy nod. They should have won it for sure. Blink and Alkaline should be in the rock and roll hall of fame.
Alkaline Trio is one of those bands that never Does any drastic changes and That’s Why they still are one of the greatest bands ever! Every album is different but still has the Trio vibe. Made me so happy to hear that Derek recorded drums on the new album. Matt has alway been an insperation when it comes to making music. Met him in Norway in 2014. Hopefully they’ll come back. Good Mourning is one of their best albums for sure.
My old band played with Alkaline Trio on the Maybe I’ll Catch Fire tour. Skiba came up to compliment us after our set and I’ve always regretted not talking to him more. Legit nice guy.
I absolutely adore Matt Skiba! Such a great interview with him, thank you for doing this. I loved his contributions to Blink so much and I’ve been a fan of his work with Trio for 20 years now (I’m 34) He’s such a great artist and person, and I can’t wait for the new album! ❤💀

You hit all the bases great interview. Love how open Matt is. I remember their online studio clips from recording Good Mourning and the update about Matt's shredded voice. So glad he overcame that.
I met Matt in Rochester NY back in 05 or 06. Worked at a local college radio station and was able to get a short interview with Alkaline Trio. Matt is a very awesome person.
This was a phenomenal interview. Alkaline Trio has been my favorite band for 25 years now and I always love Skiba interviews, as he is always respectful and forthcoming with interviewers. Stryker asked great questions and struck a fine balance between Alk3's past, present, and future. It's also wonderful to hear how close Skiba is with his mom.
still remember Matt talking about a punk house he lived in in a magazine and how the picture stuck with me, probably after here to infirmary dropped, what a catalogue, always have to go back to these guys
Awesome interview guys. I’m an old head Blink and Alkaline Trio fan since the 90’s. To have Tom back in Blink followed by Alkaline Trio dropping back to back bangers is the healing we needed after some tough years. Can’t wait to hear the full album.
When they say Matt don’t miss,,,, Goddammit he don’t miss…From early Alkaline Trio to the boys new stuff to his time with Blink…this man proved why he needs to be in the RockNroll Hall of Fame Twice.. one for his time with Blink and one time for his career with Alkaline Trio…he legitimately shaped the sound of early 2000s pop punk and Emo……This man is national treasure
Crimson is my favorite Alkaline Trio album. I’m thankful to Skiba for his time in blink. Contributions on Nine like songs on “No Heart to Speak Of” & “Hungover You” are amazing
Weird to hear someone praise that generic and lukewarm album. I like alkaline trio fine but I also don’t think Mark would have had Tom back if things were totally kicking ass without him. Blink wasn’t remotely the same without Tom. One More Time is all the proof you need.
@@justinTime077 Generic? Crimson is a masterpiece, easily some of the best of the trios songs like Time to waste, Burn, Sadie and Back to hell. Don't see why it's weird since it is one of the most praised albums by the trio.
@@KevinB27 Oh yeah that makes sense now that you say it. I thought it was such a weird thing to call Crimson generic and lukewarm haha. It is indeed a masterpiece
Matt Skiba, my man, i got to see you live a few years back. You sir were amazing with blink as well. Ill never forget it. I love Tom as well but i think you smashed it out of the park my man
Matt Skiba is beyond talented and underrated singer, songwriter, and guitar player. The vocal harmonies, drums, and bass guitar with Dan are all amazing too. Alkaline Trio are one of the greatest punk rock bands of all time! 🎸🎤🥁 🤘🔥
Great interview! I had no idea this show existed, but am so happy to see that it does. I grew up listening to KROQ and punk in the 90s, including early Alkaline Trio. A bunch of other musicians I grew up listening to have been interviewed here too, so I have some catching up to do!
Matt Skiba is just a great guy. I am a big blink fan since nearly 20 years. And I am happy that Tom is back. But how awesome was his participation, when he was part of blink. I loved both albums and especially NINE is an absolute masterpiece that was kind of my soundtrack of 2019. Thank you Matt!
Im 35 years old and have never been to any concert....EVER! I'm finally set for my first ever concert in March....and of course I'm going to see Trio for my first concert 😝 I'm so excited.
What a great interview. Just when you think Matt gets lost answering the question, he brings it back. Love those kinds of detailed answers. Thanks for posting.
I love Matt so much. Haven’t had the privilege of meeting him. But I see ALK at least once a year. His story is so important for me to understand. I know we all feel this because we came to hear him. I always loved his vulnerability. It’s the only way he could’ve spoke his mind and heart on every song. If I could time travel, I’d go back to 1997 Chicago and hang out with those guys. ALK3❤
What an amazing interview. AT3 has been my favorite band for quite some time but I had no idea about his parents and all that. As a veteran myself and the son of a Vietnam veteran, I feel like the music speaks to me now more than ever.
I have loved Alkaline since my 20th birthday and the first time I met Matt it was in Florida in early 2008. He was the nicest person and we talked a lot. It was so cool meeting my hero and finding him to be such an amazing dude. I unfortunately met other musicians that were not so nice and I'll always treasure the memories with the band.

What a stellar human being! I discovered his band in 99 cause I was a fan of Asian man records, was kind of a ska punk kid. And every ad Mike park bought had them at the top of the list that year, also thought goddamnit was a great name. So I picked it up, listened to it and my life changed! I'm not a fan of every release theyve done since from here to infirmary, but I respect their decisions as a powerhouse punk band! They've become a pillar of the scene, synonymous with acts like NOFX, 7 seconds, bad religion, descendents, etc. Congrats Matt! You deserve it!!!!
I've been a fan since Goddammit. Every time my wife or I start to make a plan with "Step One...." the dishes, or whatever... either one of us bursts into "Step Two Play In My Blooood", or we're too busy laughing about it to sing it out loud The new album is one of their strongest yet, & I'm so stoked

Good mourning WAS AMAZING !!!!! All on black is top 5 trio song ever!
Agree. Got a tattoo of a cross with a 4 leaf clover on it
