I spent 11years in Thailand and all their fish farm is earthen pond. their cat fish are so big and their skin color are so natural, you can't compare natural and artificial

I got 9 earth/mud ponds totalling 1 acres surface area. 2 years already.I also got 5 concrete pond with 72'000 liters capacity, using RAS Recirculating Aquaculture System which generating good profits. These concrete tanks being running for more than 4 years...with almost no changing of water... because I use sendimentation tanks to removed organic matter= fertilzer.
Mud pond is easy to make, but difficult to manage and waste of resources.

Concrete ponds also has a whole bunch of advantages. Most importantly, you can build it anywhere anytime. Very hard to build earthen ponds in some areas because it just dries up

nice content but all you mention were advantages of earthen ponds over concrete pond. in my opinion the view didn't get to choose. you also forgot to mention the accessibility of water and the type of soil. earthen ponds can flood easily leading to loss of fish when you have heavy rains. disease control is easy in concrete ponds than in earthen pond, etc

but in earthen pond the fish can gain immunity to disease as long as the poppulation is just minimal and you will add also a good aeration, I have both earthen and concrete pond, i grow my fry to earthen pond and stock my breeders, koi fish that are for sale at concrete pond and breeding tank are concrete ponds too

It depends where you are. In kenya the earthen ponds are very expensive to maintain. Concrete pond is lined with special materials to waterproof it. Maintenance cost is very low. Also, earthen ponds will collapse without a liner. Liner is expensive

Filtering the water depends on the type of water filteration you want to employ. If it is a large amount of water it will need some huge investment to clean the water. The best way to clean and recycle the water is through Aquaponics. Your waste water can be used for cropping and the water will be recycled and and pumped back to the fish tanks.
what about lining the earthen pond with the thick plastic. Will that make the earthen pond similar to a concrete pond?

You mean using a dam liner? Yes, it prevents the water from sipping into the ground, hence saving a lot of water. It's cheaper and equally effective

Not really, that fact doesn't really mean it exhibits earthen pond natural properties.
It is easier to harvest,sort and hatch in concrete ponds.
It is also easier to assess their growth in concrete pond.
Lastly you can build concrete pond in your backyard but cannot dig anywhere because earthen ponds keeps on expanding.
I never condemned anyone like I said, just to make you understand that earthen pond is better.
There are millions of fish farmers in my area here that will never stock fish in concrete pond. So far it's working for you, it nothing to be sentimental about.
Plus, you haven't see real fish farming. There are lots of houses with earthen pond at their back, I've seen filling station with its own earthen pond and lot's more. Packing fish in earthen ponds too are most easy for the expert too. You won't understand, less you go to an area where people do real catfish business.

If an earthen pond is not close to a sustainable flowing stream, which is not advisable, then you need to have a borehole. In this case, where your earthen pond is not close to sustainable flowing stream, then why do you need earthen pond again? Just go for overground types like concrete or tarpaulin ponds.

The place must be a water log, have stream, diggable, and secured.
