    El Chaltén is the trekking capital of Argentina and one of the best spots for hiking and climbing in Patagonia. From the several hiking options in this area we chose the popular hike to Cerro Torre and Laguna Torre first before hiking to Fitz Roy and Laguna de los tres on another dayhike.
    Now we decided to also hike the Huemul Circuit - a challenging multi day trek which I already completed 3 years ago. Though it is a tough trek it totally pays off with the incredible views you get: from the glaciers of the Patagonian Ice Field to the turquoise waters of the Viedma lake.
    This part of the trip was executed within 4 days and this is what we saw:
    Southern Patagonian Ice Field
    Cerro Torre
    Monte Fitz Roy
    Laguna Toro
    Galciar Rio Tunel Inferior & Rio Tunel
    Paso del Viento
    Viedma Glacier / Glaciar Viedma
    Cerro Huemul / Vuelta Huemul
    Paso Huemul
    Lago Viedma
    Bahia Tempanos
    Bahia Rio Tunel
    Campo Hielo Sur
    El Chalten
    I'm excited to share all our experiences in Patagonia over the course of the next 6 weeks with you. In the next episode we will visit the Perito Moreno Glacier near El Calafate, Argentina and meet impressive characters along the way.
    The Patagonian Expedition is a 95% self funded video documentary project following my trip in 2012/2013. Our aim is to show you the beauty of the rather unknown parts in Patagonia alongside with the famous spots.
    Beside beautiful landscape you can expect loads of information and our personal experiences and struggles along the way.

    Just finished this last week. Phenomenal! I had actually watched your video before going but it just doesn't compare to seeing the Ice Fields from Paso del Viento in person. It's overwhelming to say the least. there are no words in the dictionary to describe it. congrats on doing this tough hike twice Steve!

      BackPacker Steve Ha, on my trek I was actually wondering how people could even think about doing it twice. But now I see why. it's truly one of the best (if not the best) hikes one can do. so beautiful and and not crowded at all. so many unique landscapes. for instance that beach on Lago viedma is so secluded, and how often do you have a beach of glacier water (next to a glacier itself). if the trek weren't so tricky (with the weather) I wish more ppl knew about it. you're right, if I return to Argentina, it will be a priority of mine (not this year, but definitely years down the road)
      was also pleasantly surprised to see on your first huemul video that you had stayed at hostel aylen aike (where I also stayed last week!).

      Really!? You stayed with Sebastian? What a crazy, funny guy. Back then I was hanging out there for almost 2 weeks. I really loved Chaltén and its vibe...maybe this is the main reason I came back. But yeah...that slippery downhill part to the lake is a beast! ;)

      BackPacker Steve Sorry just seeing your reply now for some reason. Yeaaaa Sebastian is the man! What an interesting personality. Gets to know everyone in the hostel and he's so chill. I was in Chalten for 10 days. You're right, it has a unique vibe. It's not as touristy as Torres del Paine yet has just as much beauty. I agree with you in that I could definitely see myself returning there if I were to return to Patagonia. Hope your travels are going well!

      Para los que no saben, el perito moreno tiene un constante avance, lo que forma una represa con las aguas del brazo Rico de dicho lago, lo cual genera un desnivel con respecto al resto del lago de hasta 30 m. Por la presión de esta masa líquida se producen filtraciones en el hielo que crean un túnel con una bóveda de más de 50 m de altura. El derrumbe de esta bóveda constituye un inusual espectáculo natural y es uno de los mayores atractivos del parque.
      Este ciclo existió desde siempre y NO ESTÁ RELACIONADO CON EL CALENTAMIENTO GLOBAL es sólo un fenómeno natural

    Hello, love your videos. I am planning on doing this circuit next week as the start of my Patagonia expedition. I am curious to know how long the hike was on the last day. When did you start hiking and when did you arrive back in El Chalten?

    • @BackPackerSteve
      @BackPackerSteve  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Phew...that's hard to say. We had breakfast at sunrise and started right away...I guess we got to Chaltén by 4/5pm!

    • @SephirothXRA
      @SephirothXRA 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My hiking partner and I left from the Paso del Viento Refugio Shelter (where you'd normally start at the beginning of the 3rd day) at like 7 AM and arrived back in Chalten at almost 11pm. So we did 2 days in one. It was absolutely brutal and we only did it b/c we needed to be back in Chalten early next day. Otherwise I'd say it would take anywhere from 7-10 hours for that last part.

    • @dylanoneill298
      @dylanoneill298 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow!! Yeah, that's a haul!! Plus you missed camping on the peninsula and hearing the glacier calve during the night. We just got back from Patagonia and the Huemul circuit was just breathtaking and pretty intense in some places.

    • @SephirothXRA
      @SephirothXRA 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Camping on that peninsula would have been fun. Only, there was an absolute ridiculous amount of wind there that day so even if we wanted to it would have been difficult. Glad you got to experience the Huemul though--easily the highlight of Patagonia in my opinion.
