Climbing Cerro Chalten (Fitz Roy) via the Franco-Argentina

- Chris Farrah and I set off to climb Fitz Roy via the historic Franco-Argentina route up the southeast face of the mountain. This was my first climb in the Chalten Massif and it was a very humbling experience even though we bagged a summit. We climbed the route in a 22 hour push from Paso Superior on February 4, 2022 and spent the following 4 or so days in isolation recovering from COVID.
Billy and Sam summited only a couple hours after us but ended up open bivying at La Silla. They came back to camp at Paso Superior the next morning in the rain after what sounded like a miserable night. This place is otherworldly.
I don’t understand why these videos don’t get more views. As a climber this is the exact content I look for all the time
you probably don't want to know what gets the most views on youtube lol
Well said... I'm very afraid of heights and I get a huge kick out of these incredible short videos. Love this content.
I agree, this video should have a whole lot more views. Unfortunately, more people prefer to watch what the Kardashians are having for dinner or what they're wearing.
@@MarioLorentz23Art I agree.
@@Mr10damers yes.
22 hours with no water and covid?! That sounds like some real type 2 fun. First Covid ascent😂. Congrats guys that's a huge accomplishment! Gorgeous views!
❓🤔 I just don't see why they needed all that equipment and excessive clothing.... Personally, when i climb this mountain(again, for the 7th time), I wear shorts, a t-shirt and flip-flops! I do wear a fanny pack, but only so I can fill it with 20-30lbs of lead fishing weights to make the trek more challenging, and ensure it won't be too easy. Sometimes I carry an old, rusty Phillips screwdriver with me, as a makeshift ice axe.
As far as food is concerned, that's the easy part. I take down high-flying hawks by throwing rocks at them. Then I clean and cook them coated in "Shake & Bake" poultry seasoning, in a frying pan whittled out of a rock. 😁
@@HighlanderNorth1 Sure thing bro
@@alexiszavala4663 never heard of sarcasm?
They can eat snow I guess.
If the start eat snow the loos. Belive me
Not a climber, just a hiker. Was at the lake viewpoint at the end of the maintained trail couple weeks ago. The perspective this video gives of just how far away we still were from that summit is mind-blowing. This is spectacular, and props for summitting.
"Are you an alpinist?" Glad to see I'm not the only one that sarcastically inflates our abilities to keep the mood up with my partner!
I climbed this route in 1993... thank for bringing me back to that moment. congratulations for the ascent!
No water ☑️
Covid ☑️
Ascend thousands of feet above a glacier in 22hrs ☑️
I’m no climber, but your content is nothing short of amazing! Thanks so much for sharing this epic journey, I absolutely love the stuff that you’ve been sharing recently!
Dude you have been killing it with the content lately keep it up
you make it look easy, great attitude love this series!
I love the sounds of climbing. Gives me the warm fuzzies. Thanks for sharing! Respect
This is SO SICK!!! woaaaahhh loved it, thanks for sharing!
Grigoes don't even hug when they complete such a prowess like this. A touch of hands is enough. Boy gringoes are cold!
Wow man... just wow. I'm a new climber and I found your channel right as I started. This was insane lol, everyone has covid, and y'all are still smiling and having a great ass time AND without freakin water. Such an inspiring group of people! Love all the videos man! Also, did you take down the first video of this series? It was like 30 minutes or so.. I had 10 mins left of watching :(
My ice climbing instructor had some great stories about his Fitz accent while we were touring on the Deming glacier of Mt Baker. This makes me jealous!! Congrats!
Wow this is the prettiest scenery I've seen so far. Incredible job you all did with the circumstances.
This is such a great accomplishment. So wonderful climb. Very fantastic view. All praises to the Creator.
That place looks absolutely amazing! Congratulations on sending Fitz. Stoked for every video you put out!
2nd viewing...looking round, where's the mushrooms of ice? Those are always on show. Now you guys have just done fitzroy in rock boots, FFS!!
That place was so bad ass, a big european bootmaker called their premier mountain/ice climbing boot
"Fitzroy"...back in the day, admittedly.
All in all Tyler, a superb bit of climbing movie making. It really does emphasise the changes being made in mountaineering.
Fitzroy, cerro tore etc? I still have books written about teams spending weeks trying to do what you just did in 24hours.
You simply treated it as a valley day out ( with a few pitches of ice thrown in )...awesome mate...
Kudos to you and your buddies...
Depends on which climb you do. Some route are completely rock with 0 ice. Some are completely ice and rime 🤷♂️
Mushrooms are in the Torres. The fitz roy peaks are known to be much drier than the Torres but still have plenty of snow and ice
I was wondering how and when you were going to start your season, should’ve figured out the southern summer is the northern winter, or something like that.... awesome dude you and your bros are climbing big stuff in fine style.... the “Fun Hogs” in pata-go-nadd 🐺👍🌞👊✅🍀
Dude all your videos are unreal! Thanks for showing us how its done!
Hey Tyler! So this morning I'm flailing up easy 11a stuff near Stinson Beach on a warm sunny California day and come home feeling beat and sore. And then I get online and watch you doing this! So badass. Glad I got to climb with you while you were still doing "easy" stuff, like El Cap :-D
Keith! Stoked your still crushing it and getting out there. Egghead?
@@tylerkarow Kym's Gym, near Emperor Boulder. Not too far from the Egg. I think it was bolted fairly recently. It's not in the guide books.
Duuuuuude, tyler you are a LEGEND!! Thanks for all of this quality content!!!
This is just amazing! So happy to have randomly found your channel as eache video is 10 times better than the previous. Ad Maiora!
Simplesmente incrível. Sem palavras para descrever o que eles fizeram. Parabéns pra eles!!!! Quem esteve no pé do Fitz Roy sabe a dificuldade daquele lugar, imaginem conseguir subir o Fitz Roy. Incrível demais.
Inspiring! I wanted to see what it takes to go to the top. I’m only a hiker to the glacial pond which was covered in the first 9 seconds 😂
The good news is no water is lighter! Thanks for sharing.
Props wow!! I love hiking. I saw a photo of this mountain pop up on my desktop screen saver. I had to look it up. Had to see if people hike it. Found your vid. Turns out it's not really hiking, it's climbing lol this looked so sketchy, gave me so much anxiety. I would never do this. I'll stick to the Colorado 14ers lol That view at the top was amazing though. And glad for you guys that all the clouds disappeared when at the summit for the best view
Always enjoy every video…thanks for the inspiration
I personally dont understand why anyone would ever want to risk their lives doing this. Seems like a nightmare that would take forever too. I just dont get it or see the value. I am however, amazed by their bravery. I literally could never ever scale a wall like that no matter how well i was secured. The bravery is astonishing
That's just glorious beautiful alpine climbing got everything ice snow .rock sunshine..great acent. Climb well .👍😁
So rad! not the COVID part though. Epic accomplishment.
The tic I always wanted. Perfect weather. So beautiful. Amazing climbing guys, thx.
wow. i just wanted to know about Pizroy. but these video makes me so confusing. this is not just a travel log, but crazy and beautiful log.
I suppose came all that way to climb wouldn't let COVID stop you but not wise to do such with fatigue and reduced lung capacity in high altitude. It was risky.
awesome video, was right there with you guys, sounds of the mountain made me feel I am there, stunning views, thanks mucho, love how you did not make a fuss about covid, ....... mountain spirit trumps everything ..
Just incredible - I have no other words. Thanks for posting.
This is so awesome to watch! I hope to visit Patagonia some day, so beautiful.
Awesome! You guys are the best, thats the way to do it. Great fun, summit, all. I would of liked to climb with you. Take care bros.
All mountains are petrified giant wood stumps all minerals xome from these tree stumps you can confirm these, by watching hangman videos and also biblical trees on you tube
Haha with Covid, solid
7:29 making me visualize myself being there. inspirational. Thanks dude. also entertaining as hell!
This is really dangerous 😱 but I’m sure it was worth every second
Sam is the man!
The weather! Holy hell! Strong work.
Now Aconcagua's South Face guys!!
As handsome as you are, there's really no need to see your face while you're speaking.
Just show us the mountains and the scenery.
This is one of the most impressive videos that I've ever seen!
I believe if you can climb that steep of a rock which is still pretty tall you can easily climb everest
Pure alpine adventure very long day.
nice edit!
could you get a permit in chalten for this hike?
Amazing landscape, amazing climb!
Amazing video guys! Beautiful views and if I had the confidence you guys did to climb to the top like that this would absolutely be on my bucket list! That had to be an adrenaline rush for sure.
Thanks for sharing.
The Franco Argentinian route is the one with a dead body close to a belay right?
