Sandbars can be deceiving, they can look stable, but they can also sometimes give way and break apart when people try standing/walking on them and of course people can drown when that happens.

When I visited Florida with my kids a few years ago, I swam out to where there used to be a sand bar. Every year when we were kids, we loved collecting shells and swimming out to the sand bar. The sand bar was about a foot and a half below the water at low tide. We were such proud 11-year-old boys, standing out in the "middle of the ocean" and all. But when I grew up and brought my own kids to the same exact place, there were hardly any of those little Cocina shells and the sand bar was just gone. That's how thirty years will have an effect.

The fact of the matter is that barrier islands were nature's way of guarding the mainland against erosion & serves to offer some friction to the hurricane. They were not meant to be lived on but tourism will ignore the obvious. Banning co2 will have no effect whether you live on it or not.

The barrier islands are indeed important.
Some more adaptable to building than others.
Especially narrow islands and keys, 300 yards or less without back fill, should have never seen construction.
Nature shows us how she creates these barriers.
All we have to do is assess the amount of sand that was delivered onto the islands. These islands and keys were built, and destroyed, by this exact process over countless eons.
We will not be able to compete with nature on this.

That island is the joke of the miserable mile. They had a tiki bar out there for awhile. If I remember correctly, Cape Coral and fort myers utility companies both said they wouldn’t connect the island, so it would need a generator and water / sewage barged in/out. The public island at the end / start (depending on your perspective) with the long sandbar gets more boaters to stop and hang out in one day than that island ever would have withs it’s rock cliff wrapping the place. Just a couple of rocks and a tree, and they were sold for hundreds of thousands to people who just wanted to be able to say they owned an island. I have no doubt someone will still buy this island for 1 million.

Across the street from where I lived on the bay there was a narrow, pie shaped sliver of land that belonged to the county. It's long side bordered the bay and it's other long side fronted the dead end road. There was enough room there to park a large boat trailer and that's all. Suddenly the land was up for sale and sold for one million dollars in a matter of days. Pretty soon crews were there putting in pilings and erecting a retaining wall. I moved away from there about then, but when I saw pictures of it a year later it was a six floor apartment building! Those had to be the smallest waterfront apartments on the Gulf coast. They had to be studio apartments and I bet they rented for a lot of money too!
