  • Martha Goldman Sigall worked at the Termite Terrace, Leon Schlesinger's Studios in 1939 when Bugs Bunny was created by Ben Hardaway, whose nickname was Bugs.
Ben announced one day that he was going to create a rabbit based on Daffy Duck. Im going to put a rabbit suit on that duck, he said. The result was Porkys Hare Hunt (1938). Chuck Jones then used the rabbit in Presto-O Change-O (1939). Bugs Hardaway then directed Hare-Um Scare-Um (1939). Chuck Jones directed Elmers Candid Camera (1939) with the rabbit.
Tex Avery was assigned to do A Wild Hare (1940) and in that cartoon, the rabbit says Whats up, doc? for the first time, to Elmer Fudd. Martha Goldman asked him why he said that, and Tex said it was a popular thing to say when he was in high school.
In A Wild Hare, they decided to name the rabbit. Tex Avery wanted to call him Jack E. Rabbit. The model sheet listed him only as Bugs Bunny, since Ben Bugs Hardaway had created him. The PR person, Rose Horsely looked at it and recommended Bugs Bunny. Leon Schlesinger liked it and thats how he came to be named.
Martha Sigall was 92 when this video was recorded. She worked in animation for 53 years and when she was 88, published Living Life inside the lines: Tales from the golden age of animation. Its available from Amazon.com. In 2005, she was given a Lifetime Achievement Annie award.
Martha passed away in 2014 at age 97 in her home, surrounded by her family. Contact her son Bob at Sigall@Yahoo.com.
Bob Sigall recorded this in her home studio in Culver City California in June of 2009.

Bugs Bunny was mostly created by Tex Avery! XD
There had been previously existing rabbit characters considered to be prototypes of Bugs (thus being Bugs incarnations) but the actually rabbit Bugs Bunny himself in it's official debute as "Bugs Bunny" was Tex Avery's creation mostly. His name was "Bugs" named after Ben "Bugs" Hardaway as he had been the inspiration for Bugs through his previous rabbit creations.

You know the thing about the Bugs Bunny story is that there were two differences about the name Bugs Bunny and the catchphrase, "What's up, doc?". The difference was that Mel Blanc claimed that he suggested to the directors that instead of calling him Happy Rabbit why not call him Bugs Bunny after Bugs Hardaway, and the real story was that someone else had a second suggestion of the name Bugs Bunny because the model sheet Bugs' bunny was seen on the model sheet. Mel had also claimed he adlibed "What's up, doc?" and the story wasn't true either and that catchphrase was originally adlibed by Tex Avery, using it in the Texas expression. It almost seemed like Mel Blanc took credit for almost everything, including Porky Pig who was originally voiced by Joe Dougherty before Mel took over in 1937. Bugs Bunny certainly was Mel's original voice, but another story too was Tex claimed to ask Mel to give Bugs not a New York accent, but a voice like some actor whose name I can't remember but it sounded like Mel originally created the voice as well. But it is really interesting to know the REAL story behind Bugs Bunny and it's very nice indeed.

+Trevor Phillips GTA V Oh, by the way, I meant no offence to Mel Blanc and his son Noel who is still alive, but it's true. Mel really does take credit for almost every voice.

I asked Martha about this today. She said the TV networks often trimmed the cartoons to make them fit their time constraints.
The original "Hare-em Scare-um" had Bugs (although he was not called that yet) bouncing down the path into the distance. The hunter bounced down the path a few seconds later, upside down on his head.
Some rumors say it was only a head - hence the question of violence - but it was his whole body...upside down.

You're right. I had never tried that, but did today. TH-cam has messed up many of the words. One of the times they say F*** Martha actually said "fuzzy". The other two times it says "F*** buddy" and she said "Bugs Bunny." I don't know if this can be fixed.

Tex Avery created Daffy and the rabbits created by "Bugs" a well as Bugs Bunny himself created by Tex Avery (inspired by "Bugs" and named after him) was based on being similar to Daffy.
Tex Avery went to North Dallas High School and they said "What's up doc?" to each other. My teachers and staff told most of us about the phrases originating there. Recently other students and myself had been drawing and painting Looney Tunes murals all down a specific hall way. ^-^ I wanna learn more.

Bugsy Siegel was already a famous mobster at the time, maybe added to the reason Leon liked the name.

I read a "biography" on Bugs Bunny, and they said the humor of "What's up, Doc" to the audience was attributed to the shock that he could be so nonchalant about crazy situations like having a gun shoved in his face. Especially when cartoons characters up until that point were wacky and spastic, for one to not only be collected and reserved, but specifically cognitive of his situation and nevertheless acting flippant was apparently hilarious.

  • @Axxidous
    @Axxidous 14 ปีที่แล้ว

Daffy first actually. Most noted by Tex Avery. Porky yes. I believe Bugs, Daffy, Porky and Fudd are THE main characters (and now Lola is the 5th main but rare character not created by any of those guys back then. Though just because someone newer created the character doesn't make her any less official and good as a character. ^_^ She's just younger than the other characters lol)
Daffy IS famous, he's just jealous of Bugs based on the history of production, but he does everything same as Bugs

I have to disagree, I think Daffy is as equally recognizable and famous as Bugs or Porky pig! If I am correct, wasn't Porky Pig the first character ever developed by Tex Avery and the termite terrace crew? I am an avid Loony Tunes fan, I would say that when Chuck Jones teamed up Daffy, Bugs and Elmer Fud, they became instant classics and were absolutely hilarious!

According to David Gerstein, the synopsis of "Elmer's Candid Camera" Warner Bros. submitted to the Library of Congress to get that cartoon's copyright registered refers to the rabbit in no uncertain terms as Bugs Bunny.
You can see elements of Bugs in all of the "proto" cartoons; kissing his enemies, fake deaths, quoting Groucho's "this means war", dressing up in drag.
