5 things that frustrate me about the LEICA Q | still my favorite digital camera

Time really flies and by now the Leica Q is almost 4 years old and is still holding up pretty well. However, over the years shooting it I've come across a couple of things that bother me. In this video, I am telling you all about the 5 most annoying "features" of the Leica Q.

I’m in agreement with most of these quite minor points, Robin. I still think the Q is a brilliant camera. If it was waterproof and offered interchangeable lenses it would clean up... (and probably kill the m series). Something I’d like to see added but probably never will, would be film simulations as with the Fuji cameras. A deal with Kodak to reproduce their stocks would be terrific.
A fixed lens is rather a positive, it optimized for the Q and keeps a bit smaller than an interchangeable camera/lens combo would be. However, I wouldn't mind a sort of M with a really good EVF. 👌
Other frustrating things: 1) Not dust sealed. Lots of users report dust on their sensors. 2) The black top and bottom bars on the back screen hide parts of the actually covered picture frame. Shoud be more transparent. 3) Electronic shutter modes (< 1/2000th) cannot be excluded in auto modes and suffer from severe banding effects. 4) An eyepiece made out of gum should be able to be attached to the viewfinder to block from sunlight. 5) The focus length of 35 mm instead of 28 mm would be better for my personal taste.
I had dust on the sensor after a trip to the dessert. I had it cleaned and haven't had any issues ever since.
For me personally, 28mm is the better option and the big success speaks for Leicas choice to pick a 28mm lens.

I’m looking forward to the Q2. I loved the Q but I think the Q2 will fix some of these issues at the very least. Let’s hope there aren’t any new issues to dislike.

I'm surprised there's so much negativity about the video. I've shot a lot of video with my Q and the quality is gorgeous, at least for me, and the combination of focus peaking and the perfectly weighted focus ring lets me pull focus better than any other camera I've owned. I'm actually bummed about them leaving out the video button in the new version. I'm excited to try the 4K in the new model.
David, for casual users it might be ok but there is no manual control, no headphone jack etc. The 47MP will probably not be great for video either.
Good to see even a Leica ambassador putting out a video like this, and giving constructive criticism to the company. Either way, I still think the Q is a really nice camera, but obviously no camera is perfect ;)
For sure no camera is perfect. A refinement of the Q would be close though. 🙏

Over 4,000 pounds later. Leica suckered a fare few into buying this, including me. The most anointing thing about this camera is its poor low light and bulb or should i say lack of bulb mode. So meny better cameras out there for a fraction of the price,
Agree - the on/off switch drives me crazy - seems like they fixes it on the Q2 according to the leaked photos. And yes, the buffer sucks big time, especially because the camera is locked while writing photos. I would add the lack of a tilt screen. In sunlight I sometimes have no idea what I photograph close to the ground.

would you get the Q2 over the Q if you don't have the Q to start with?
Great video, even though I think they are 5 very minor things. Mine is the rattling sound, when the camera is shot off. A tip on the on/off switch: Leave the Continous shooting mode at Low and then just turn the on/off switch all the way to C. In that setting it is very easy to grab only one frame even if it is set to cont. And now a question: I've noticed from your "How I Shoot" videos, that the Q setting is f 1.7 - How do you focus those rapid taken shots on the streets? Manual, zone focus or auto with face recognition? Would be glad if you could share some about this. Thanks.

Hello and congrats for this honest video. I've read about problem of dust on the sensor. I'm thinking of buying a used one. What is your expérience about this ?

For me, the most annoying thing is the EVF. It is so bright that it is only suitable for framing. This is unforgivable for a camera of this kind. Also, the brightness of the EVF is not adjustable. The viewfinder of a much cheaper Panasonic or Olympus camera is much better. Also, poor paint coating, quickly scratched. The reason I love the Q is just the lens and quality pictures of this camera.
That has never been an issue for me and I've never heard anyone complaining about it either. 😱
Now the Q2 is out. Interesting timing of your video. :) Will you get the Q2? It has the huge resolution you were not hoping for though when you talked about the buffering.

hi. how do you deal with the horrible color noise at night and shadows and dark white walls? it's really frustrating and happens even at iso 100

Not sure yet. I will probably get one to try out but who knows if upgrade or not.
Hi Sir. Did you already repair the eyecup of your Q? Mine got detached and I'm worried that dust might go inside the EVF. :(
I haven't and I certainly won't. It's too expensive because they have to replace the whole evf.
Seems like some of that issues will be fixed on the Q2, but 47Mpx on such a small buffer... oh God! I'm considering to switch from Fuji to the Q2, let's see what comes tomorrow. Great video, as always!

Your words dictate reality! I saved up a ton took the plunge into getting a Leica M. It was worth it. You just need to want to afford a Leica over other things.
I thought the same. Recently sold my entire Canon lot to buy a Q-P (NOS) and a SL2. Charged a 75mm SL APO on visa and now I’m immersed in the Leica family. And totally here to stay.
I really hope you can tryout the CL one time. I fell in love with it, especially with M lenses. Thanks for the video!
Just got leica Q2 . Feels famliar but all your concerns seems to be taken care of . Even the battery charger tells you when your battery is at 80 %

Nice review! and amazing pictures!! and You test already the Q2 ? will be your next digital camera? and for the dust on the sensor? what is the solution? send it back to Leica top open the camera? that makes me scary!
A video about the Q2 will come next week. I had dust only once after being in a dessert. Leica fixed that and I had no issues ever since.

I agree basically will all these interesting gripes should not be there but none really cause me any issue most of the time. The battery you kind of get used to, you know when to start thinking about changing it. Movie button I rarely accidently press so no issue for me, I quite like the video output but it's slow to get focus etc. Nor buffer really as I tend to use the slow Continuous mode and rarely machine gun. On off switch is stupid why not do the C first then S then less mistakes. Its too easy to set to C. The diopter yep just in out the bag it changes, it's a pity. I find face focus is good it finds eyes nicely but I wish it would flash up green in-focus boxes to be confirm the target you have. The silly lens cover I have dropped a 100 times and it's chipped n dinged now. Battery cover is vulnerable but with L grip the camera is loads nicer to handle. I cannot use the camera without it too slippery. Despite those things I totally love using this camera its fabulous. The vast amount of good outweighs the small bad.
Thank you Paul! 👌 The movie button is not a problem, it's rather the movie mode. If you accidentally trigger the movie mode then also the press of the shutter button will start the video recording.

Regarding the diopter dial. If you use the original thumbs up, the dial is very good protected. And the thumbs up is so nice to have on this camera also ;)
Danke, auf dieses Video habe ich sehr lange gewartet. Überall sehe ich nur Pros, deine Negativpunkte sind... Nicht so schlimm.
Nutze die Kamera sicherlich deutlich mehr als der durchschnittliche Q User und da fallen mir auch mehr Dinge auf. Schlimm sind die Punkte nicht aber teilweise erschließt sich mir absolut nicht, warum das niemandem während der Entwicklung aufgefallen ist.
Leica Q2 vs D Lux 7, which one make more sense and has the best shooting experiences?
Q for sure! 👌
The Q2 wins at 28mm and 35mm, but the D-Lux7 wins at 50mm and up. I say that because I've done the tests. For some reason, the Q2 lens does extremely well on the full sensor or with a small crop, but the D-Lux7 at least equals and in some cases is better at 50, and better yet above that. Complicating the comparisons are aperture and settings, shooting JPEG only versus RAW, and a plethora of other things.
Hi Robin! What a coincidence! Right after your Video the Q2 was showed to the world. Some of the frustrating Things are gone. What do you think about the Q2? Will you upgrade? What do you recommend, when I ask you, should I purchase a Q1 or QP for a good Price (with reasons for Frustration! ;) ) or get the new Q2. I am very curious, what you will answer. Cheers! Helmut
No, I won't upgrade, at least not now. The 47MP would slow down my work flow and I almost never crop my images. And my Q still works just fine and I have learned to live with its quirks.

@@therealsirrobin Hello! Robin I have a Q 2 since June and used it a few times. When it comes to Streetphotography or Portraiture I frankly have Problems with the Autofocus, especially with a wide open Aperture. First I tried "Face Detection", which didn't work consistently and in worst Case the Camera operates in "Multifield-Focussing". 1-Field-Metering didn't make the Job either, so I work in most of the Cases with Spot-Focus. What am I doing wrong or have to consider? Thank you for your answer in advance and Best Regards!
I am not using a Q2, so can't really comment on that. Hope to get my hands on in the future and have a proper go with it.
The 5 points are literally the same with my experience and the most annoying for me is the loose start button.

The loose button drives me nuts. And the weak buffer has cost me critical shots. Q-P still a keeper but got a SL2 for serious shoots.
I saw that you used your Q a lot. As it is not weather and dust sealed: Have you ever had a problem with dust on the sensor and if so, how did you handle it with this fixed-lens camera?
I had dust on the sensor after one year. I got fixed and no issues ever since. I don't babysit my Q and use it in the worst conditions, even in the rain.
@@therealsirrobin Thanks and good to know! I've bought a used Q for 3000 Euro recently (exhibition sample). I am not a Pro and didn't want to spend almost 2000 Euro more for a Q2 with weather sealing and 47 MP. I rather spend this money on a X-T3 + 50mm equivalent. Still a very small equipment for traveling.
I would like to add one point that bothers me more than the the 5 points which you mentioned: It has no tiltable screen. A 28mm lens is great for close-ground photos and I found myself missing this feature more than I thought because got used to it from my previous cameras. Now I have to do acrobatics that might look weird to my environment, hahaha. I am thinking of getting a small external display via HDMI for the hot shoe in order to solve this problem.
Well, I think it's understandable that if the user chooses Movie Mode, the camera will circumvent every definitions to make it... a movie mode. I think the problem here is just the user... by getting to that mode by accident :-). But, of course, the camera should have an option to edit the Movie Mode! With that, disabling the Record Button function, inside the Movie Mode, to become permanent when another accident comes.
that off-on-Continuous turn. is absolutely ridiculous, but unfortunately, i don't think they'll ever change that. It's been used since leica M8. and all other leica apsc sensors too.
They got rid off it on the M10 and CL too and from the leaked photos it seems like also on the Q II. 👌

That doesn't matter, or do you really think that Leica is looking on TH-cam for user complaints?
The 'original' DNG file of Q has slight little black corner, it's a small problem if I care Q's design is real optical, not using post software correction.
I would add to that list the uncompressed DNG format. I already produces 44MB images that reduce to around 30MB when you tell lightroom to optimize them. Now imagine the Q2 if it would produce uncompressed images as well!
That would easily be a 100MB file. 😬

My dial is pretty firm, even tight. Maybe they have changed it for later produced models

I once got one offered for a very very reasonable price and thought about to change Fuji X100F for that camera but finally I didn't do it and kept my my X100F .
That camera has to grow on you probably, for the time I had it (and the price) it did not tickle me enough .
The X100f is certainly a good camera but the Q is something else. The lens itself is so much better and I prefer 28mm over 35.
@@therealsirrobin But the Fuji has a leaf shutter so no sync speed problem, and that is mighty handy if you want to act fast since you don't need to think about the shutter speed anymore. I use the little flash Q triggers on my Fuji and Speedlights.
It has build in ND filter.

Non of the buffer issues you mentioned .
For a street photography camera I see more pros than cons.
The low light performance of the Leica will be better since it has 24MP FF over 24 MP APSC .
27 over 35 is personal, I have no problem with that, cause when I see something interesting, I take steps forward or backwards to get a right frame, I don't frame in post by cutting off the sides.
And the Q lens is faster and better (although the X100F and the lens are build for each other) but if you compare the price, I can almost buy three X100F's for a Q

@@alozor13 Thanks, I thought so cause the sync speed is 1/500 and I was wondering how that could be done, but they keep it quiet in the description.
The output is great no doubt but I thing the bang for the buck is not enough.
The Q can sync up to 1/2000 no problem. The lens is not only optically superior it also is a lot better for manual focus. I had the x100s for almost a year and I wasn't really happy with it. It's also the look that the Q can create when shot wide open is unmatched by any other fixed lens Camera. However, my biggest problem is Fuji as a company. The way they treat their film heritage is super annoying. Not only are they discontinuing film stock after film stock, they now are raising prices for the remaining films by 30% which is a joke. 😬

My only real problem with the Q is the AWB which leans towards rather yellowish results. I wonder why this doesn't get mentioned more often.
Thomas Marban If you shoot RAW, AWB Can be easily fixed in Lightroom with one click
I shoot Raw only, so I don't really care about AWB.
One thing that frustrate me about leica q is the price, and i don't have it. Though you need to go on business to sell your picture with this price of camera. Well for sure it is good for street photography, i suppose.
Mike, what do you expect, half the price or less? The price is totally justified and there is always the option to get a used one for a good price.😉
@@therealsirrobin I have a leicax2 i know how good the leica is but it's still out of my budget. I use à fuji x100f, also good at street photography. Did you know why street photographers in Brazil are afraid to use their leica m in street, how much more à 47mp leica q2. My Leica cp has 40 mp, but still the image is unlike réal camera. Robin, every manufacturer, apart from Olympus I believe, has brought out a full-frame digital camera now! I wonder why no one has produced a small range-finder style, full-frame, and weather sealed of course! Camera, similar to a Leica camera, is there an obvious strategic reason perhaps to do with copy, right, or something? Robin? Anyway that is what I’m waiting for Robin!

Love the Q, but holding it for long period of shooting hurts my hand. Haven’t tried the grip though
The grip is so so much better. It also protects the battery cover and part of the body, makes the camera look tougher and bigger.

Extensive Leica Q user here! What I don’t like about this camera is that images are too perfect, I mean, too clinical. They look fake sometimes for my taste.
But why byuing a Leica then? 😉

LEICA can fix that crap with a firmware. I would like the Q if it had 4k. but the internal mic sucks and the Q does not support an external mic
Most of these things can't be fixed via firmware. They could get rid of video and I wouldn't be sad about it but that's just me.
Völlige Zustimmung bei Punkt 4, ansonsten stören mich deine Punkte nicht wirklich. Es macht einfach so viel Spaß mit dieser Kamera zu fotografieren. Und der Sucher... 🤤

Sicherlich die Q2, ist ja eh schon alles öffentlich. Was anderes würde mich schon sehr wundern.
Was dann die Q-P interessant für welche Zielgruppe macht ? ;-) - Und wieder keine M10M (ich hatte es schon befürchtet)...
Den Sinn der QP habe ich nicht so recht verstanden, ist im Grunde einfach nur ne Q in ner anderen Lackierung.
I would add that the lens cap is really badly engineered, it always falls off and they are not cheap of course.

I will give it a try but I am not sure if I upgrade. Maybe at one point in the future but certainly not at launch.

Q2/Monochrom…. Such a fail. Scratched EVF from wearing glasses, dust on viewfinder and on sensor on a “weather sealed” body, hot pixels above 800iso quickly masked by Leica with a update to pixel map the bogey sensor.

Maybe a piece of gaffer's tape over the diopter wheel would solve that problem of bumping it out of focus.
Have done that already but it didn't really last that long.
