From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
If you enjoy war thunder or Microsoft flight simulator 2020 or even dogfighting in Battlefield 2042, consider getting yourself into Digital Combat Simulator by Eagle Dynamics, the Combat side of Aviation with the BVR and Dogfights really provides a different and interesting perspective on aviation. You can fly all kinds of combat aircraft including the F-16, F-15, F-14, JF-17, Su-27, Mig-29, Mirage and the F-18 Hornet along with many other aircraft and helicopters like the Ka-50 and Mi-8.

Turns out the split throttle thing actually can help you control the Tomcat with a lot more authority, pretty cool to see what kind of thing in the movie too. Maybe they got that advice from real pilots who did it in real life? I don't know. Super dangerous but high payoff in a dogfight. Thanks for watching guys, Much Love.

Since the engine nacelles are as widely spaced in Flankers and MiG-29s it would be worth you trying this technique in those planes as well.

I can recall an article where one F-14 Pilot shared stories of his time flying the big fighter. He mentioned that a fellow pilot of his had actually mastered the split throttle technique and could use it to execute the perfect turn with the Tomcat. He himself told that he never quite made it to that level of perfect timing, so it seems like this technique was very very difficult to execute perfectly.

The fact that the F14 seems to have so many of these unconventional tricks up it's sleeve that a seasoned pilot can employ gives it so much character in my eyes. Really cool to see how much performance you can get out of the Tomcat if you really wring it's neck out. Kinda proves the point Rooster says in the movie about it not being about the plane, but the pilot.

I recall seeing a video featuring a former F-14 pilot explaining that one of the biggest reasons the tomcat was so good as a fighter was that there were planes faster than it. There were planes that could fly slower than it. But there has never been a plane that is both faster and slower than a tomcat in a fight. It always has a place in the flight envelope where it has an advantage. And a good pilot could take that little edge and bring the plane home pretty much every time.

    • @brandonclark435

The Tomcat is especially impressive when you consider that it was made back in the day to replace the F-4/F-5 and would have flown in its heyday against Mig-21/Mig-23... Even when matched against Mig-25 and other concurrent planes it was still shockingly good. ST-21 would be a badass airplane. But the Super Hornet was the smarter decision. The Navy needed replacements for the A-6, F/A-18 legacy Hornet, the KS-3 tanker, and the E/A-6B Prowler. The Tomcat 21 couldn’t do all of those missions & would cost as much as a USAF F-22. The Super Hornet does, and while not as glamorous it’s cheaper and it’s effective. Not sure it would be as effective on an F15 due to the engines being mounted so close together....the Tomcat engines have a much bigger gap between them and can apply greater yaw forces onto the airframe and really push the nose around.

I mean it kinda makes sense. because of how far the engines are separated on the F-14, they're off center with the center of mass. So one engine in AB while the other isn't imparts a torque on the plane to move left or right. This also means that the flankers/Felon can also do this because their engines are also off center.

But that detail you came with there made me think of that incident in the late 80ies or early 90ies on a domestic flight of USA where a three engined airliner experienced a massive failure in the hydraulic system after the rudder engine exploded and they could only control the aircraft using the engine thrust from the remaining two under the wings. They actually managed to land the plane like this, though unfortunately a gust of wind flipped the aircraft over during landing and it crashed. But against all odds many still survived.

The navy, Grumman and nasa tested differential thrust on the tomcat back in the 1970’s. It was known then to aide significantly in air to air engagements. Outside the test community the older more experienced pilots might have used it but the newer guys hadn’t developed the requisite skills needed to use it safely. Of coarse the navy invested more in training the tomcat pilot/rio pairs than other aviators because of the complexity of the aircraft and missions it was to fly.
