This Austin Six/20hp ' Mayfair ' has a 6-cylinder 3.4 litre engine, there were 2 types of body, a fixed- head limousine and this even rarer Landaulet version with division and fully opening rear compartment.This car was owned by a late friend and I helped him to restore it around 20 years ago .He also owned another fixed- head version .Derek is right , it drives impressively with great presence with excellent Girling brakes and the quality of the coachwork is as good as anything else in its class.Note the one-way telephone to the driver !.This model was superceeded within a much more modern looking range , the 28hp with a 4 litre engine which I have never seen and possibly near extinct !.This car would provide an opportunity for a enthusiastic classic car family for superbly comfortable occasional rides to rallies and the seaside for likely much less than it would have been a few years back as Derek says .
I appreciate Derek doing these pre war cars, he's the man with the knowledge, and with an enthusiasm which is infectious. The others can hold a camera, but they cannot hold a candle to Derek when he's waxing lyrical. They say "nice" a lot, and clearly they'd much prefer to show off some boy racer Ford from the 1990s. I predict that long after Derek has gone, and me come to that, people will not only be admiring the tv series for its social history, centred mainly around Derek's quirky charm, but also the gobbets of advice in these company made vids.....
I have been looking for an Austin Mayfair for ages. I remember seizing them occasionally in the 1950s -my Dad pointed one out to me once, but told me it was a pity that they were no longer made. Mine you, I bought a TX1 LTI London cab, which has a terrific amount of space in the back & two fold down seats. I have an XJ Portfolio Jaguar, which is very luxurious and comfortable, but could do with more room in the back😊 - the car itself is certainly large enough!
Its all true what he says. These type of cars Austin 10/20 etc are stunning for not much money. If only my Garage was big enough to take one I'd buy one.
Derek is quite right to say it is Rolls Royce quality. As a kid in the 50s, my dad bought a 1932 RR Landaulet as our family car. It was almost identical to this Austin; actually I never knew Austin built cars like this! One advantage of the Austin is that the driver can easily get into the car from the driver's door; the Rolls had both gear lever and handbrake next to the door to encourage the chauffeur to slide over to the passenger side and get out onto the pavement! Does anyone know what it sold for?
Well Derek has been telling us his life story in episodes since this unique and highly entertaining programme began. BUT YES--lets have the Official version , with family pictures and Film etc. P.S Did he say this car wasn't Austin taious ?
It's interesting to listen to Derek on the vintage buyers disappearing from the market place. I was thinking only a few days ago about the 70's and 80's cars that are demanding high prices. In 30 years will we still be wanting that Capri, GTi, Vanden Plas, MG B and Triumph 1300. I won't be here but I guess the next generation will be buying the BMW E46, Focus STi, Honda type R etc. Watch this space if you live long enough.
Modern cars will just fade out Vintage cars you can fix in a shed wiff a few spanners etc but modern stuff is rammed into the engine bay you can't get at anything blah blah

Wonderful to hear Derek talk with such enthusiasm about the car - we need a spin off series of Bangers & Cash where Derek tells his life story!
