The TTC is undergoing some difficult times. I was on the subway on Sunday at 10:30 am going west to Kipling ( end of the line) from Bay. First of all , I was absolutely shocked at how badly the Bay Station at Yorkville has deteriorated. There was water dripping onto those red platform benches from the ceiling and water was also running down the pillars and pooling onto the platform floor. When the train pulled in ( coming from Bloor and Yonge ) it was as crowded at a week day rush hour ride . It did thin out quite a bit by Ossington, though. There were definitely people riding the train who were "experiencing homelessness." The TTC will soon not be the "Better Way" if they don't do something to correct the various problems with it soon. I am taking the UP Express train from Union to Pearson Airport on Thursday and will think of you, Johnny! I watched your video doing that trip last year and it convinced me to give it a try. It really is a great service! This was a good video with Henry along for the ride!

Even during off rush, the subway is still full of people. Last time I went in 2015 it was different with less people

I sound like a broken record and my rant solves nothing but if I ignore the phones I'd believe that this is a 20 years old footage. TTC is so outdated, the stations is one thing but at least new trains a must. A monthly pass for 150ish CAD is absurd for this service. It kinda says everything when instead passengers they are calling people "customers", they are just about the money. All over the world there are many better systems for less. I really love this city and plan to at least visit it but it's hard to overlook the quality of public transportation, it's just unbelievable to me that my central european city has a better service for much much cheaper. Sorry if I offended anybody, :)

Sadly, I live here and couldn't agree more! The TTC is a mess and has been for a long time. Apart from the subway stations which are ugly, claustrophobic and increasingly dirty, the system is increasingly unreliable and downright dangerous...

The TTC suffers from a few systemic issues that have hobbled it. But people are way more critical of it than is warrantied. The entire TTC network is vast. The majority of subway stations are, on average, about 70 years old now. The system is chronically underfunded. And has to count on getting about 60% of its operating revenue from the fairbox. Something which is unheard of with big city transit providers. Truth be told, the TTC used to get a sizable operating subsidy from the provincial government up until the early 90s when the government of the day downloaded many programs onto municipalities.
Things did get better for a time when Andy Byford was the CEO. He took the subway to work. And made it his personal business, making sure the stations and trains were kept clean. And helped modernize the system. Sadly after he left. His replacement rolled back most of the improvements Byford made. And in general his replacement has been a useless tool, collecting a pay cheque and not much else. Combine this with the change in attitude with regards to how we handel people that are mentally unwell. Where we now allow them to roam freely rather than putting into institutions. The TTC also used to crack down on homeless people sleeping in the trains or stations. But this has also stopped since it's seen as being unfair to the 'unhoused' to make matters worse. The city has effectively been sending the 'unhoused' into the TTC as a means of shelter. Rather than dealing with them by either providing shelter space or institutionalizing them when they are unwell. And the final issue the system is faced with. Is that transit police and fair enforcement don't want to enforce rules because when they do, they are called out as being racist and discriminatory. So, the TTC effectively can't even enforce its own rules to kick trouble makers off the system.
Until we decide that the rights of the majority of the population outweigh the perceived rights of those who are homeless, mentally ill, and marginalized. We will continue to have a system that is declining more and more and becoming more and more unsafe. Until less and fewer people ride it. This means less fare revenue, therefore less service, resulting in fewer riders, and were in a negative feedback loop.

I feel that the problem with the TTC is ultimately ourselves. The TTC isn’t perfect, but most of the problems we face on the TTC isn’t from the TTC itself, but from us. Murderers, crazy people, and all those types of people stay here because we can’t place them in more homes. Because of NIMBYism pushing them away. Though on the part of improving those who run the system, definitely because under the current government, they care a lot more about driving than transit.
