Tonight I feel so lonely, I just feel empty, like my life has no purpose or direction. Tbh Birdie is just chipping about the song but bon iver lived through this song but vocally her performance is good but that rawness and originality is impossible to capture by anyone other than bon iver

When I was 12, I heard the line, "And I told you to be patient; And I told you to be fine; And I told you to be balanced; And I told you to be kind," because they were words written on a staircase. I never bothered to look them up. But they kind of resonated with me and I held onto them for years- as encouragement in a way. It wasn't till now that I've heard this song and when I heard her sing those words, I cried because I had forgotten them but never in my worst moments.
I don't mean to just shit on your parade, but try listen to bon Iver skinny love. He wrote it originally and maybe you will feel something different :)

This version is beautiful, but completely incomparable to Bon Iver's. Birdy sings it from a teenager's point of view, where everything is so black and white. Bon Iver sings it from an experienced point of view, where nothing is black and white. He wrote the song to be a mix of emotions, and sings it as so. Not only is he sad, but angry, and acknowledges the joy he has felt in the relationship as well. Birdy has given the song more of a pained feeling, which is perfect for young heart break. However, Bon Iver sings the song with passion and expresses truth that relationships are more complicated than purely depression after heartbreak. It pains me when people say this version is so much better because I feel as though they are missing the point of what the song is written about. It is not about sadness, it is about love.
I interpreted the song as an infusion of both, sadness and love. I think Birdy approached the song in a inconsolable way (probably the emotions from a past relationship) and Bon had a more upbeat tempo which hints towards the topic of love, rather than sadness. However, "Staring at the sink of blood and crushed veneer" hints at depression, and in my opinion, the 'crushed veneer' is her skin and the blood is hers. I think she's referring to self harm, and also 'skinny love' might be her? The whole "I told you" part hints at this, well to me anyway. But, that's the incredible thing about music, everyone creates their own interpretations.
Songs are suppose to be a way of expression, so it does not matter if she sings the song different then Bon Iver, black and white is what it means to her, and I am going to say I love this version more.
***** I think the fact that you're not at all reading into it is much, much worse than hardly reading into it and judging the song difference purely by voices. This is, after all, Bon Ivers song. I have known and loved it for much longer than I have even known that this version was a thing so yes, I am biased. But what I think important is what you get out of the song, I hope you look into it enough to get something from it or that when you mean voices, you mean emotions. But music does different things for different people and I guess it's just good that people are enjoying both versions.

It's so sad that the original isn't as popular, the artist went through a lot of pain to bring about this song and it shows in his voice but it is fitting for his version to be forgotten, it is a fitting story for what the song is telling.

This is nothing amazing actually. It's not phenomenal for a 15 year old to do. I've seen a bunch of other teenagers, probably under 15 years old, or around 15 years old, do WAY better. It doesn't sound like she sings that great, and the piano playing wasn't aything complicated either. I do like her rendition of this song though.

From then I listened to it for almost every day. I would sometimes shed some because it is so beautiful. Your song had inspired me to do things. Not everything went well, but I still play the piano and Skinny Love is my all time favourite. You also inspired me to learn English so that I could fully understand the lyrics. It took some time to understand what pouring salt meant, but now that I know it made the song sound even more beautiful. I know it's not what you wrote but anyway. Times like this, 5am when I am thinking about my sister (she passed on in a tragic road accident on 11th May 2024) I go to songs she loved. You're not alone trying to survive after a worst relationship. I've been in that experience that sometimes I want to kill myself to end up the pain and suffering. Just be strong, keep on praying for healing and peace of mind. Keep yourself busy. You know i didn't share or talk to anyone about what i felt. I isolate myself and silence, i keep crying every now and then, but i hope and pray I'll be okay one day. Praying for your healing also.

When I was 12, I heard the line, "And I told you to be patient; And I told you to be fine; And I told you to be balanced; And I told you to be kind," because they were words written on a staircase. I never bothered to look them up. But they kind of resonated with me and I held onto them for years- as encouragement in a way. It wasn't till now that I've heard this song and when I heard her sing those words, I cried because I had forgotten them but never in my worst moments.
I don't mean to just shit on your parade, but try listen to bon Iver skinny love. He wrote it originally and maybe you will feel something different :)

This version is beautiful, but completely incomparable to Bon Iver's. Birdy sings it from a teenager's point of view, where everything is so black and white. Bon Iver sings it from an experienced point of view, where nothing is black and white. He wrote the song to be a mix of emotions, and sings it as so. Not only is he sad, but angry, and acknowledges the joy he has felt in the relationship as well. Birdy has given the song more of a pained feeling, which is perfect for young heart break. However, Bon Iver sings the song with passion and expresses truth that relationships are more complicated than purely depression after heartbreak. It pains me when people say this version is so much better because I feel as though they are missing the point of what the song is written about. It is not about sadness, it is about love.

I interpreted the song as an infusion of both, sadness and love. I think Birdy approached the song in a inconsolable way (probably the emotions from a past relationship) and Bon had a more upbeat tempo which hints towards the topic of love, rather than sadness. However, "Staring at the sink of blood and crushed veneer" hints at depression, and in my opinion, the 'crushed veneer' is her skin and the blood is hers. I think she's referring to self harm, and also 'skinny love' might be her? The whole "I told you" part hints at this, well to me anyway. But, that's the incredible thing about music, everyone creates their own interpretations.
Songs are suppose to be a way of expression, so it does not matter if she sings the song different then Bon Iver, black and white is what it means to her, and I am going to say I love this version more.

I isolate myself and silence, i keep crying every now and then, but i hope and pray I'll be okay one day. Praying for your healing also.
